This is why I watch this channel. While I happen to think that at its $200 price point, the Dandy is a frickin' work of art, and I kinda sorta like S90V for its (supposed) edge retention, MC wasn't all that impressed.
He didn't spend 15 minutes gushing over this knife, and gave his somewhat less than enthusiastic opinion of the it; which I appreciate. These are the types of reviews that help to overcome any impulse you might have to smash that "purchase" button on the next shiny new thing that happens to catch your eye, and allows you a moment to reflect on some of the negatives that may have initially escaped notice.
I know it's all subjective, but I'd rather watch an honest review than a sales pitch.

While I also enjoy watching Knife Center's videos, I go there to see the latest offerings, and not for any purchasing advice. For while Dave is likeable, knowledgeable, and informative; the bottom line is that he's there to move product, and will find something nice to say about even the smelliest turd on the table.

Agree with the sentiment in your comment whole heartedly; this is a huge reason why I watch MC as well. You'll never get a review of a knife that's, in his opinion, "perfect", just because other people are claiming it to be.
That being said, S90V isn't just hype; with a proper HT (between 63-65 HRC) that stuff will cut and cut until the cows come home. Even with a sub-optimal HT (60-62) it's still in the ballpark of properly done M390/20CV.

Hello MC, I just wanted to thank you for your expertise you were spot on about the CJRB Pirite stainless button lock that is the best knife for the money I have ever handled and I'm and old man thats handled a lot of knives anyway it impressed the hell out of me so I will always listen to your thoughts before I make a knife purchase. You are a great knife reviewer and provide really good information on your content and thats what it's all about. Thanks MC your the best! KWM

Weird note about the Kubey Dandy - the Kubey website lists the two models with CF inlays as having S30V blades rather than the S90V of the solid Ti handled models.

I'm liking the fact that s90v is becoming for prevalent. It might unseat s35vn or 154cm/cpm154 as my favorites once the prices start coming down. Not sure about the design of this guy though, I'm generally not a slim blade guy. I prefer wider/taller more slice oriented designs.

Got mine today. Ordered right after I watched your review. I found it on a discount for 108€! and I really love this knive. Very smooth action. very sharp and a really serious blade lenght for the weight!

As I mentioned in your first impressions video, this is my current favorite framelock (and I have quite a few 😉). Just to mention a couple other niceties: ALL T8 hardware, and the lock bar relief is on the inside for a cleaner look (as an aside, I don't know why more companies don't do this, as in sandwich construction it doesn't matter in terms of cost or difficulty). The real wins are the superb action, perfect lock up, incredibly easy to manipulate both open and closed, and the efficiency of lots of blade in a pocket-friendly package. WMK had a crazy deal on it ($108) but even at $160-$200, this knife is hard not to recommend.

Yeah I would bet the HRC is 59-61. That's at least what most Chinese companies have their S90V listed as on the knives I have found in it. I don't know what it is with Chinese and Italian companies, they seem to be terrified to harden their steel above 61. Whether it's D2 M390/20CV or S90V etc. I wonder what these companies would do if they got some ZDP 189 or K390, would they just put it at 61HRC and make a complete waste of good steel? I'm just baffled that multi million dollar companies can't get their hardness up a few points. While we got small knife makers all over Europe and the States that have no issue getting S90V M390/20CV & CPM 4V at 63HRC K390 at 64-65HRC. And the same with the High end Russian and Eastern European companies. When China buys steel from Crucible or Bohler they must get access to Datasheets with heat protocols. S90V is decent at 61, but that should be the low point, not the high point. We as consumers have BEGGED Chinese companies to up their hardness, and everything they have done so far is upped their price, especially looking at a company like WE. When the price is a bit on the lower side, it's a bit easier to justify. But I rather they just use steel they are capable to get at an appropriate hardness. *Exhale* 😅

I think the geometry is how it should be for S90V. Weaker steels need thicker geometries in order to avoid any kind of chipping, I had bad experience with a thin blade in S90V, so now I choose tough steels for fine slicers. The tougher and the harder, the thinner it could be in term of edge stability. (when companies will undestand that, we’ll get 2mm magnacut blades, the beggining of a new era for us.)

Never used a ball bearing clip. Is that press fitted? I love titanium so I can anodize it. Can't do that if there are steel parts that I cannot remove. It will short out and singe the area rather than transmute the coloring. I can't even tape off areas to get around this. Anyone have tips regarding this, or information about the potential for removing the ball bearing?

Considering that I bought a PM2 in S90V for $140 (on sale) and a benchmade proper in S90V for $110 (on sale) I can’t consider $200 an amazing value for chinese S90v with a mystery 59-61 HRC HT. For a titanium framelock with extensive and detailed milling, sure seems like a value. But I don’t think that this is a particularly good value for S90V.

  • @nicholasedwardbehindtheedg2343

60-62 is good for s90v. Below too soft. But s110v and s90v both perform quite well in the low 60's. Even Spyderco, who is known for excellent heat treats, run in that Rockwell range. See outpost76 videos for testing at those Rockwell's.
