I will give you my opinion on the “loud pipes save lives” as a non motorcycle driver. I don’t ride a motorcycle, but I do drive a car, and loud pipes get my attention and I instantly think: A bike is coming from somewhere, which makes me aware of the situation and start looking for where the bike is. That in my opinion makes an accident less likely. On the other hand it is scary when out of nowhere a bike passes you in a weird way(maybe too close or something) and you were not aware of it because it was very very quiet. As a car driver I actually appreciate loud pipes, makes an accident less likely to happen in my opinion.

Riding fast doesn't kill or cause accidents intrinsically, it's riding beyond your own capability that catches people out and higher speeds magnify the consequences. Riding 100mph on an empty, dry, well lit motorway is actually far less demanding than riding at 30mph down a narrow, muddy country lane.

The theory of Loud Pipes Save Lives comes back to the idea that drivers have been known to look, left right left and not recognize a motorcycle. Also, motorcycles can be especially difficult to pick up in a blind spot or rear view mirror in general. However, loud pipes may grab the attention of those driver's and thereby save you from getting run over. I enjoy your channel, thanks Sean.
Edit: Yes, in PA the law is called "Ride on Red"
The bill, called "Ride on Red," has been signed into law by Gov. Tom Wolf. It allows drivers to exercise "due care" and make a decision to legally go through a red light. The bill was proposed because motorcycles typically do not trigger traffic light sensors that make lights turn from red to green.

I'm still out on the loud pipes, but leaning toward myth. I've had both, loud (V&H) and stock. Honestly, I think most of the risk avoidance comes down to how you ride, lane position, and situational awareness. Maybe the loud pipe guys rely too heavily on the sound of the bike to compensate for a sound road strategy?
Bottom line is riding requires greater focus and awareness than driving because you are less visible. And while loud pipes may compensate in some situations for rider complacency, nothing will make it safer than knowing what you're doing and riding in the moment. Just the opinion of a rider more than 25 years on the road.

The problem with loud pipes is, the faster you're going, the less effective it is. Loud pipes work great at low speed, but that's also where a collision is less dangerous.
I did get side swiped the other day. I did think to myself th
afterward that if I had loud pipes would have prevented that, but at the same time, nothing bad actually happened. If anything, my highway bars protected me from injury and protected my bike, and fucked up his car.
So, if anything, I think highway bars are more be beneficial than pipes, since there is an actual barrier that protected me.
People that are paying attention, like yourself, would have likely noticed me, and avoided hitting me. The problem I see with loud pipes is that it can also annoy drivers and actually make the situation more dangerous, plus, they are illegal in my state, which would just get you pulled over.

Let’s use a comparison here. When a Plane is flying over head usually you hear the sound, it’s loud yes but the plane is already strait above you or past you when you hear it so kinda the same concept, the faster the bike is going the less chance you are going to hear the sound before it gets to you. It’s true there are situations were you may hear it first but the sound is behind the bike not in front of it. Yes there are circumstances that the sound may get you to notice the bike sooner than normal cause of the loud pipes but it’s not every time.

I could take my 2017 Harley Dyna, turn it on next to my 2017 Ford Edge, get in the car, and barely hear the loud ass bike sitting right next to it. • @kennruss3756
    @kennruss3756 Před 4 lety +9

Loud pipes can save lives. It all depends on where you're driving and what situation you're in. Loud pipes make your presence known on the road. This reduces your chance of being hit by some driver who suddenly merged into your lane without looking, or because you were in his blind spot.
In busy and small city streets where jaywalking is common (at least from where I am from), loud pipes make pedestrians think twice and look your way before attempting to cross the street. Some people just don''t know how to follow traffic rules or don't know how look both ways before crossing.
Sometimes, the horn is enough to catch attention, but other times, things just happen too quickly where you won't be able to react quick enough to reach for the horn.

The problem with the "saves lives" statements is that they are interpreted too broadly rather than as representing say a 1-5% increase in awareness. Once a car pulling out from a side road with the windows up and I gave my bike a nice rev, it caught their attention and they stopped quickly. In traffic a car was merging into my lane and I hit the horn. The horn had no affect and with a quick grab of the clutch and a rev of the engine they pulled back into their lane. I was just behind the drivers side door. So for me loud pipes save lives is not a myth. lol I'm not being mean or anything just sharing a few experiences where having loud pipes grabbed the attention of drivers and saved me from an accident.

Im braking and trying to change position quickly, that is guaranteed to save you mkre times than reving the bike , what if they are day dreaming / fighting with thier wife / kids wearing headphones / listening to a really interesting podcast? Reving the bike is only useful when you pull up beside them added to a withering stare it might snap them out of wherever their brain has been, but never as a accident avoidance strategy...

The rev let them know I was there and they quickly stopped rather than pulling on out. With cars coming from the other direction had they pulled out no amount of braking or swerving would have prevented me from either taking the ditch or hitting them. Just this last week though I had another car simply just pull right out of a gas station thankfully was no oncoming traffic and I was able to move into the other lane. Sometimes just braking or swerving works other times there just isn't a lot of time for anything.

Arguing that loud pipes don't save lives is claiming that a loud exhaust has never (not even once) caused attention to a rider on the road and kept a car from hitting into them. If in the history of motorcycle riding, a loud exhaust has at least once saved a person from being killed in an accident, the statement 'loud pipes save lives' is therefore true. But that's my opinion on the topic and I choose to have a loud pipe for safety.
My Honda was quiet for years, and when I finally made it loud I realized that cars do pay more attention to you on the road. I'd rather quiet down my bike to be honest, it gets annoying listening to it scream for hours at a time - but I honestly believe it's safer. Ride safe everyone! :)

Unless in 20 years you plan on getting a hearing aid and are good with that. And no, they do not stop 100% of noise. Also the loud pipes save lives thing. Yes, I believe they do. Although 'loud' is relative. People are not accustomed to seeing one headlight, and for some reason it just does not register all the time. But they can hear the vibrations from pipes. Also, if I think about it, since I changed to louder V&H's pipes, I've never been hit by a meteor. So far, so good. :)

Your old tyres will have wear points where you have been riding them most frequently depending how you ride. So when you get a fresh set that have no wear and are more even it can feel completely different for a few miles so give yourself time to adjust and take it easy till you are comforable and have worn them in for a few miles.

Of course, they were cheap Whitney type magnets.

i agree with most of those except number 8. i have tried the magnets with little luck in the past. even on a bigger bike, a vtx honda, theres always a couple intersections that leave you waiting for a car to show up and trip the lights. this can be a even bigger issue when working second shift, get off work and theres not much traffic, then theres always going to be a light or two on the way home that you end up running red. luckily my area has been going with new camera triggers that work for bikes and cars just the same. though not yet to 100% of the lights its gotten much better.

On which one would I be more likely to get hit by a car that didn't see me, on one that is super fast that outruns its own sound or on a much slower, much bigger one with loud pipes? If they don't have a Raider check CycleTrader.com they have new old stock, (no or low miles and have never been titled, no one has ever owned them on a older year model) that's where I got my 2012 in 2018, it had 1 mile on it, never tilted and was 6yrs old in the Yamaha Dealership in Steward FL. Got it for $11,750 but you can get newer Raiders than that for the same or less. After riding my Raven Raider S for a year and putting 5K miles on it, I LOVE IT! So glad I didn't go with the Harley Davidson Breakout.
Also check out the official Raider forum as they have almost 5K Raider owners that can give you advice before and after the sale on parts, mods, and trouble shooting problems. Hope you get the Raider you want at the price you want. Also join a credit union as they usually have the best A.P.R., (interest rate) on auto/motorcycle/atv/RV and personal loans. I got 5% preapproved before I even talked to the dealerships. Also when you narrow it down to your top 3

loud pipes DO save lives without question. I cant tell you how many times after getting a bike and before getting loud pipes and people come in your lane non stop. I have seen it time and time and time again in decades of ridding. On top of that its much faster to rack the pipes than to fumble around for a horn you rarely use. Your hand is always on the throttle. Most times when someone doesnt see you its lightning quick and that split second is the difference in getting hit by a car or not. I am only speaking from the standpoint of being in multiple wrecks in my ridding career and looking at the reasons why. Put on loud pipes and more people will avoid you because they can hear you.

People literally went from not knowing I was there to visually verified looking over there shoulders as I approached their rear quarter panel with a " WTF IS THAT!? " look on their face as I passed . And even then a lot of times the only reason they were coming into my lane after that pipe instal was because they were target fixated on me as I passed cause my bike was so loud.
I mean you cant argue those numbers. Accidents can still occur no matter how loud your bike is but my close calls with people that didnt know I was there went down 80% ON AVERAGE . Loud pipes save lives. Sure takes their eyes off their goddamn cellphone when they hear an uncorked thumper coming down the road.

What are you talking about with the heat cycles? If anything, racing slicks decay in performance after their first cycle. Street tires are made to withstand thousands of heat cycles. Once they’re warm (from tire warmers) and scrubbed in (take 1 lap easy) they’re at max grip. They don’t need multiple heat / cool cycles. Once they’re hot and the surface is scrubbed from a couple turns, you’re good.

I am a motorcyclist and a car/van driver... I personally have had many (50+) occurrences, where I was driving my car/van (highways and city roads - two and more lanes) and I heard (sometimes feel the vibrations of) the motorcycle approaching me BEFORE I actually could see them in my mirrors..... The sound/vibrations of the exhaust alerted me to their presence and general location near me, which I feel improved their level of safety greatly....
On the stop light sensors.... you are right, partially... :-)... The first "controlled" traffic lights put into use (circa 1960's) actually employed a "scale" in the roadway at the stop signals, really. At an intersection, a car would roll onto the black rubber top surface of the scale (top of the scale that was flat and mostly even with the road surface) and the car's weight would trip the "scale" and tell the traffic light there was a car at the intersection. I am old enough to remember them. They were taken out of use as the scales' moving parts wore out and were subjected to the heat and cold and road debris/gravel.... which caused them to malfunction over time. FAST FORWARD TO THE GOOD PART.... I saw a tip on one of the Biker Web pages that you can buy a couple of strong (sometimes called super magnets) magnets from Lowes, rip open the packaging, place the two magnets together and put them on a steel frame member under your motorcycle engine "area" and the magnetic field from these two magnets will trip the sensor wires currently in use in the pavement at stop lights so you don't get stuck there with a perpetual red light in your face. So I went to Lowes bought the package of magnets (two to a pack for about $4.00 at that time) and placed them on the steel frame of my 2002 Heritage Springer under the engine "area" AND IT WORKS!!! Since I installed those magnets I have not been stuck at a sensor controlled stop light again.

In my state, as long as you come to a complete stop and it is safe to go, you can run a red light on a motorcycle legally. They are actually really relaxed when it comes to motorcycles. No gear is required apart from safety glasses if your bike doesn't have a windscreen. (I do wear gear though) it is not uncommon to see a guy with no helmet, no shirt, wearing shorts and sandals on the highway. I, personally, do not have a death wish.
