The Tokyo Subway that consists of two systems, Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway, only make up a small fraction of the rail rapid transit systems in the Greater Tokyo area.
Other 100+ lines operated by JR and private railway companies in the Greater Tokyo area are planned for a separate video, so please stay tuned!

*Please take note that this is **_FAR_** from the complete picture.*
    1. The timeline took off so late not because there were nothing beforehand. It's because there's already an extensive rail and tram network around and inside central Tokyo respectively. The Japanese Government Railways had built the circular Yamanote Line and the Japanese Government for a long time prohibited private rail companies from building inside the circle. So these companies terminate at various points on or outside the Yamanote Line e.g. Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Ueno, and Oshiage.
    2. Basically the ENTIRE metro system is physically connected to one or more of these suburban lines not shown in this video. Asakusa Line for example connects both to the Keikyu Railway to the south and Keisei Railway to the north. The service pattern of the metro trains don't correspond to their trackage 1:1 as they'd very often continue way past their own tracks and into the suburban lines. The same goes for the suburban trains, often running into the metro's lines and stations. Asakusa Line, being connected at both ends to compatible gauge lines, enabled the private companies to run airport-to-airport trains from Haneda to Narita without having to build dedicated trackage. Only in Tokyo can you find subway, suburban, and airport trains running on the same track and calling on the same subway platform.
    3. Continuing point #2, the track gauge of the metro lines is in fact dictated by the gauge of which private suburban it's going to connect to. Some are in standard gauge. Most in 1067mm gauge. Again, because most of the suburban lines run on 1067mm gauge. Electrification of the metro is also almost entirely overhead (not third rail) for the same reason.

Great analysis. We can't forget the Akabane/Shinagawa line built by Nippon Railways and acquired in 1906 by JNR.
Also as you said most of the subway has overhead wiring but for the first two line the Ginza and Marunouchi.

It's to the point that most of these lines, other than the Ginza and Marunouchi lines are basically main line railways, they blur the lines that much. There really is little difference between them and the commuter rail lines like the Yamanote in terms of rolling stock design and frequency.

I love to stay along Asakusa Line and point 2 is exactly why. Just keep your bags at hotel after check out, continue my last day trip at Tokyo, back to hotel, pick up my bags and head to airport, no trouble in finding locker in major transit hub, get onboard the Access Express or Airport Limited Express and get off at airport. The only issue is during service disruption it can be pain in the ass, especially when through service train to airport cancelled.......almost missed my flight once due to impact of heavy rain at Keikyu Line

A guided tour of the Tokyo subway system by a knowledgeable person is a real highlight of a visit. There's a busy stairway that if you were running you could easily smack your head on the protruding ceiling - this is because it was the only possible way to put a pedestrian tunnel to that subway's platform. Less than half a meter above that ceiling is the tracks to another line (I think the Ginza). And when you're riding the lines there are odd jogs and diversions (to the right.... then back to the left....) to go around things and near bumps in short rises to fit between two different crossing lines. Once you know where they are you enjoy them every time you take that line.
It's all quite remarkable. (I just wish Japan would go on a 4 day work week, no more than 10 hours a day.)
