In this episode of In The Kitchen With Matt, I will show you how to eat Mangosteen. Also, have you ever wondered what does Mangosteen taste like? I will describe what it tastes like to me, tell you where they come from and where they grow as well as give you a few health benefits for this amazing fruit.
    Where does Mangosteen come from?
The Mangosteen is native to the islands around the Indian Ocean. It is cultivated in Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Borneo, Philippines, Southwest India, in the west in Columbia, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Florida, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, to name a few places. If it is tropical, these will probably be able to be grown there.
Dubbed the "Queen of Fruit" they are eaten fresh, put in salads, and desserts.
    What are the health benefits?
They are packed with nutrition and high in antioxidants, moderate amounts of several essential vitamins and minerals, like Vitamin C, B9, B1, B2, Manganese, Copper. They contain a decent amount of fiber. Support blood sugar control, promote a healthy immune system.
What does the mangosteen taste like?
Taste is definitely subjective, but to me, they taste kind of like a mix between a strawberry, pineapple, lychee, and peach. Slightly tart with an explosion of sweetness. They are extremely juicy.

Don't throw away the skin it's very nutritious too. The dried skin is used in daily cooking instead of tamarind in western costal part of state of Maharashtra. It's called as Kokum in local Marathi language there. We also make a drink called as sharbat specially for summer it's called kokum sharbat

OMgosh! As a professional cook of over 30 years I'm always looking to try new things. Your description of the taste is spot on. Yes, incredibly expensive, but when you can, absolutely try them. I like to add the segments to a spinach salad. Not baby spinach, but the large curly leaf, dark green spinach, with a fig and kumquat vinaigrette. Sooo good!!!!

I grew up in the Philippines and this mangosteen is something we just pick from the trees on our way to school and eat like picking apples. Just so happened that yesterday we bought some at the Asian store in Naperville, Illinois. Brings back memories.

We just tried them for the first time on Kauai, having bought them from a local grower at a small farmer's market. I believe they were $4 each. Delicious. Maybe the purple exterior influenced my perception of the taste, but I thought it was most like an intense plum flavor.

I live in Thailand and mangosteen are in season right now. The parents of twins in my class have a farm and they invited the families of all the classmates to go pick fruit today (mangosteen and rambutan). Wow! They sent me home with a huge bag of them (it must have weighed about 5-6 kilograms: ~12 lbs). I gave away about one-third of them to my neighbours and kept the rest. They're SOOOO good. They're abundant here right now and are priced at about $1.30 USD per kilogram (59 cents per pound).

Last year 2-3 fruits and now just about ten to fifteen. They are not yet ripen fully. Some of them are two and a half inches in diameter and started getting yellowish in colour. Good question. For one thing, they do not ripen after they are picked, so hopefully the ones you get are ripe. So the growers to pick them when they are ripe. You will know it is ripe when it feels a bit heavy in your hand for its size, the out peel will be smooth, and purplish red, and it will give a little when pressed with your thumb. If they are unripe they will be super hard.

I've never had one, but when you mentioned it tastes a like lychee, I'll pass. I've never had one of those, but thought of trying one does not sound good.
We have someone selling 15 lbs for $99. For that price, I would definitely pass.

these are much tastier than lychee. It doesn't taste like a lychee, only similar in texture. super juicy and sweet, you really should try it, I have never met anyone that didn't like it. 15lbs is way too much, just buy 1/2 a pound or try and buy 2 or 3 of the fruits to try.

Probably why they were so cheap. :( Sorry that was your first experience with them.

OMG! You don't know how to eat it. You don't need a knife to open it. Don't teach something you don't know.
All you need to do is to remove the stem above and squeeze the top with the lower part of your palm. It will break open instantly.

There is more than one way to do something. Yes, you can open them with your hands with the compression method. This is the most common way here in the West. The farmers in Hawaii that grow them, open it this way. As well as many other people. And don't tell me how and what to teach. If you already know how to eat them, why in the world are you even watching this video? And opening with a knife is a much cleaner method. Just like eating an apple! There is more than ONE way to eat it. Just like many OTHER fruits.
