    The stocking will constrict the root growth because these ferns spread their roots to seek a good hold and nutrients... If you're going to use fabric, it would be better to use the netting used to contain lemons, satsumas, mandarins, which you can buy in any supermarket. Wrap the root ball with sphagnum moss, then put the whole thing into the netting bag. Bunch up the edges and tie it up loosely, making sure the fern ball won't fall out.... Attach it well to a piece of untreated board. Wrap a little more sphagnum moss around the net bag to hide the mesh, and if necessary, pin it in place with the 'u' bits of paperclips. Ensure the top-layer basal frond is pointing upwards,' so that it can 'catch' water and nutrients. The main stag-horn fronds will naturally hang down, so make sure your root holder is firmly attached to the supporting board... the roots need both air and grip...

    Good day!!
    The plant that you mounted is a Platecerium superbum. There aren't female and male fronds, the ones baring the spores (seeds) are referred to as the fertile fronds, the upright growing ones are merely there to protect the roots and to catch debris falling from the forest canopy to turn it into compost which serves as a source of nutrients. these are referred to as "nest fronds" Your superbum will grow to nearly 2m in diameter. It also however has a front and back side and you unfortunately mounted it with the back which will attach itself to the front away from the board. You need to mount it in such a way that the growth bud is pointing away from the board, tree or mounting surface. Otherwise you will end up with a struggling unattractive plant for very long until it maybe one day rectifies itself.
    What I find very effective is a few well placed nails in the board or tree, and a few cable ties with which you can pull very tight. Google image mature Platecerium superbum to get an idea of just how spectacular this plant can be.
    Enjoy!

    Hello ladies and thank you for your video. I have three varieties of staghorn and am planning on taking each one out of the pot and mounting them. However, how do I mount a larger one that basal fronds are pointing every which way? Is there a wrongway to mount them? Meaning, I know yo8u look for the new growth and that is the topside of the plant but how do I mount one as ONE fern if the new growth for each pup is pointing a different way? Do I HAVE to seperate them all?

    Interesting video but I think you are miss informed on the male and female fronds. There are fertile fronds with spore. But there are no male fronds. The shield frond does not play a roll in the propagation. The spore are single cells that grow into prothalia and the prothalia contain the male and female organs. Ferns are different from other plants that have male and female parts.

    • @stuartxu8069
      @stuartxu8069 Před 6 lety +3

      Maggie S. actually, the shield doesnt act like anything sexual. the function is mainly to collect leaf debris from the canopy so the plant gets its fertilizer. also in some species the shield doesnt look like a shield, its more like a staghorn itself.

    DO NOT FOLLOW THIS ADVICE! The plant she mounted BACKWARDS is a Platycerium Superbum. She mounted it with the back of the plant that would naturally adhere to a tree facing out and the rhizome pointing toward the board. She doesn’t know the first thing about these plants! Male and female? No! Fertile and shield fronds. And a superbum won’t produce a fertile frond till the shield fronds are 18 inches tall from the rhizome. And this plant won’t adhere to the board EVER the way she’s done it. She ought to take this abortion down!

    You all seem very nice, but this video is giving some bad advice and info.
    Stocking should not be used, it will restrict growth of the roots and especially the rhizome.
    This was not mounted correctly, you want to disperse the roots on the board and then cover in moss. You also want to try and mount it so the rhizome is going upward.
    Please do a little more research next time!
