- In the struggle of good and evil in fighting games, we always like to focus on the protagonists and antagonists for the basic mechanics and most overpowered moves. But what about the other main characters involved the plot? I’m referring to the secondary protagonists, officially known as the deuteragonists. These characters generally have the easy-to-use mechanics of the protagonists, but give us another option for beginners besides the default character when you start up the select screen. Let’s see who’s the best of the second!

I love how most Mortal Kombat characters (Scorpion, Sub-Zero, etc) were given importance, unlike live action MK movies.
In this new Movie, they kill off Scorpion, only to have New Main Character Cole be his Descendant, & carry his Legacy.

Eh, that I didn’t like. I felt like Cole Young could be the Alice of the Mortal Kombat films. From what I’ve seen from the RE films’, movie character, Alice, has been an overkill, making most RE characters feel incompetent. This is what I’ve been getting from Cole Young and the new MK movie.

I’m not a fan of the original live action MK. It’s okay, but I have seen a better Mortal Kombat movie that I really enjoyed. It’s an animated movie called Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge, and it’s the best I’ve watched, to me at least.

I grew up playing mostly fighting games my older friends taught me the basics then it was up to me to figure everything else out which I liked. I found my style of playing and characters that fit my style and I practiced to perfect my gameplay. I never played competitively just casual with friends

Yosuke Hanamura (Persona 4 Arena):
He's Yu's number 2 and even if he or Labrys is the protagonist, Yosuke primarily supports the both of them (next to Teddie). Also his story was adapted in the P4A manga.
Noel Vermillion (Blazblue): She's technically a Tritagonist, but I like her more than Jin and she had more plot relevance.
Aeon (Castlevania: Judgement): It's arguable that he's the protagonist, but since he's unlockable, I'm giving that role to Simon.
Sion (Melty Blood): Again, this is debatable since some of the games are centered around her, with Shiki and friends being dragged along for the ride.
Sonic (Sonic Battle): He may be the hero, but the story mainly follows Emerl the Gizoid.

In KOF he’s top tier now a days while ryo is always low tier I think they meant to stay with the main character change of AOF 3 seeing how ryo lost his fireball and has his play style changed dramatically to not be a shoto

He was he gets made dues now a days in KOF he always gets new tools and constantly rated top tier while ryo is usually mid low to low tier
Ayane can teleport, she just doesn't utilize it in her general moveset ever since DOA 2, which was probably so the developers can give her and Kasumi completely different movesets. She does still teleport to avoid stage objects, in the story modes, and during some super moves. Her main fighting style is focused more on her tengu-style spinning, which makes her unique to play compared especially to Hyabusa and Kasumi.
Im kinda disappointed that Ken didn't get enough appearances in SFV's cinematic story mode
It's like They want to Retire Ken to be just a Father, while ALL The Spotlight is on Chun-Li.
Honorable mentions to Maxima and Shen Woo too and possibly Meitenkun after the shun'ei arc ends

Glad to hear there some other Robert fans out there! Art of Fighting is a series I used to overlook, but as the years went on, I learned to appreciate how the story and fighting structure of those games were. I love what they did with Art of Fighting 3 and I hope the series gets some more love in the future!

What I like the most about Robert is that instead of wearing karate gi (except for that time in KOF2000 as Another Robert), he enters battle wearing expensive clothes and he is not afraid to flaunt his wealth.
There are so many mechanics that exist in fighting games now days because of art of fighting it’s not even funny it’s way more influential than fatal fury; FF has the better protagonist in terry that’s about it; without Robert or king AOF wouldn’t have a presence in KOF

I think a secondary protagonist is also known as a deuteragonist, as in the second most important character. Because usually the protagonist and the antagonist are the most important characters.

Robert is the main character of art of fighting now a days; in KOF ryo is constantly low tier while Robert is always ranked top tier now; he’s always getting upgraded and changed around while ryo just becoming more dull and weaker by comparison

Alsoo Benimaru it's a another team in the new KoF Game because lore wise, Kyo asked him to investigate a new character powers (Shunei from the previous game)
While Kyo is on another team with Iori and Chizuru
In KOF XV Team Sacred Treasures felt more like a Chizuru Team, with Kyo, & Iori as her Boys.
Robert's staring role in AOF3 was deserving of the number 1 spot on this list regardless of what the Ken fanboys will say.

Actually you made a mistake Ayane can teleport she just chooses not to. Dead or alive 1 in ayane's move list she can teleport similar to Kasumi and her thing is ice/snow, just like how Kasumi is cherry blossom hayabusa when he teleports its leaves and hayate is wind. That's why in doa2 she does a ninja spell and it's like snow a storm when fighting Kasumi in the story

Though Ken is originally the deuteragonist and Chun-Li the tritagonist, with the passage of time, Chun-Li has become a more important character than Ken, probably as much if not even more than Ryu himself. Anyways, Chun-Li is the best and most legendary Street Fighter character.

Andy is my all time favorite from Fatal Fury. And Ayane has purple hair and red eyes, so obviously she's way better than Kasumi. Ky is my favorite from Guilty Gear too, so I'm starting to notice a trend here...
Besides, I love Kasumi (the Todoh girl, not DOA) more than baked potatoes.

I've always wanted to know something when watching your videos, why you don't use footages from the latest entries of the fighting games you mention on your videos ?
A lot of it is for the sake of variety. I've spoken about Ken before, so we've seen plenty from SSF4, and a majority of what I spoke about was from the SF Alpha story, so I focused on Alpha footage. Sometimes it's also related to me not having the game and not needing the extra footage since I have plenty of other games from the series. For example, I don't own SFV, but I have the other SF games.

Ken Masters, my favorite character in Street Fighter!
I disagree with calling Benimaru a deuteragonist. The KoF deuteragonist is Iori Yagami. Yes, his relationship to Kyo is somewhat antagonistic, especially early on, but Iori is firmly on the "protagonist" side of the central conflicts of the KoF series, and is definitely the second-most important character on the roster.

You should do a top 10 confusing fighting game characters. And what I mean by that is characters who are not what they appear specifically gender roles, for example: like in Street Fighter I always thought Makoto was a guy but it turns out he was she. And the same could be said throughout most other fighting games you or any other player may not be aware of. That's just an idea to keep in mind later on.

Also i kinda say that isla was actually was second protaganist because she has a specter (was actually a floating hands with coolest power) and cutscene of team rival.
Yes. Isla is the rival/deuteragonist to Shun'ei, the same way Kula was for K' in the NEST arc and Iori was to Kyo in the Orochi game.
but as noted in the video, Benimaru has been in a support role with Kyo, Elizabeth, now Shun'ei making him a prime exemple of a supporting character for the serie as a whole. (funny enough, because of that he is the character who won the most KoF tournaments.)
What about top 10 gimmicky fighting game characters?
I love characters with unique gimmicks like Hakkan and that bow and arrow girl who has limited arrows.

I was a bit weirded out when you added Nina as Tekkens Secondary Character but thinking it about now yeah shes the one who interacts with the Mishimas the most. Doesn't mean she's likeable like the rest of the Mishima Family though lol.
I know ken is or was the secondary protagonist of the series until the second one. When the second game came, the other protagonist role was given to someone else. I mean who has been in every Vs. Franchise ever made in Capcom History other than Ken Masters and made an amazing return from absence from two game sequels?

I've heard that a lot too. It's partially why I put Virtua Fighter in the honorable mentions since the story isn't that prominent to elevate one character over another, unless you look at the anime, which follows Akira

Virtua Fighter shares the same universe as Virtua tennis and Virtua racing. Jacky the racer from Virtua racing. I don't know too much about Virtua Fighter story because I don't think it's ever shown anywhere other than maybe the instruction booklet. There's a criminal organization somewhere in the background and I'm pretty sure they're specifically trying to get Jacky and Sarah.
@@minakohiashi8882 Ah, that makes sense. I use the anime as a side reference, which puts Jacky and Sarah into a support position for Akira and Pai, so I see how that mixes up with Sega's actual plans for the characters
Actually i'd lean towards Kage being the main character strictly in terms of story since his mother is actually Dural and he's won the most tournaments. I'd say Akira and Jacky are more the "face" of VF. I used to think Akira was the "main" character but he honestly doesn't have much to do with the plot overall. He has no real involvement with J6 like Kage or Jacky.
I feel like Chun-Li is the Secondary Protagonist in Street Fighter more than Ken.
I mean she is the First Female In Fighting Games, has been in more franchises like ryu than anyone else and gain popularity of it. Yeah, his role is gone.

Skullgirls is like Soulcalibur where it depends which plot thread you think is most important. Squigly fits with the most important plotlines, like the Medicis and parasites, while Cerebella seems to span more stories and has a character arc. My kneejerk thought is Cerebella, but thinking more, I'd say Squiggly since Filia is my de facto main character.

Breakers is nice too ngl.. Sho has the typical shoto moveset, whereas the rival of him, Dao-Long, is more charged-based. Their styles are the opposite of each other

I like video, but.... Nina getting her own game should not have any bearing on her status. Tekken 7 showed how little they think of her. Hell, Lars got his own story and Tekken still thinks he's a joke (multiple TTT2 ending) By this logic, Jax is a secondary protag since he got is own game. Tekken protag changes by the game and she's never been secondary in any of the main games. SFxT had zero input from Namco. That's like saying Akuma is the main antag because Namco pick him with no Capcom input. It's your list, so do what you do. The video still gets a like from me.

I totally agree with you man! I still have my doubts with Ken Masters. I love Street Fighter, and I appreciate Ken a lot . But, Chun-Li is my ultimate favourite, my inspiration. Do you think Chun-Li earned a lot of protagonism (sometimes even more than Ryu)? Or was it Ken the one who lost favouritism??
I think it was Chun-Li that became more popular. Considering she was left out of the first 2 iterations of SF3 before she was brought back due to popularity and how her plotline crept into the main plot over Ryu, it seemed her influence was magnified, while Ken stayed at the same place in popularity (still high though)
