Jallianwala Bagh, located in Amritsar, India, is the site of a tragic massacre that occurred on April 13, 1919. This event is a significant chapter in India's struggle for independence from British rule.
On that fateful day, a large crowd had gathered in Jallianwala Bagh to peacefully protest against the repressive Rowlatt Act, which allowed the British government to imprison anyone suspected of sedition without trial. Many people in the crowd were also there to celebrate the festival of Baisakhi. The gathering, however, was deemed illegal by the British authorities.
Brigadier General Reginald Dyer, the British officer in charge, decided to disperse the crowd by force. Without any warning, he ordered his troops to block the main exits and open fire on the unarmed men, women, and children. The troops fired continuously for about ten minutes, expending approximately 1,650 rounds of ammunition.
The narrow exits of the garden were deliberately blocked by the troops, preventing people from escaping. Many were killed in the stampede, others jumped into a well to escape the bullets, and hundreds were left dead or injured. According to official British reports, 379 people were killed, and about 1,200 were injured. However, Indian sources and eyewitness accounts suggest that the actual numbers were much higher.
The Jallianwala Bagh massacre sparked widespread outrage and condemnation both in India and around the world. It led to a significant shift in Indian public opinion against British rule. Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi intensified their campaigns for non-cooperation and civil disobedience, ultimately contributing to India's fight for independence.
In the years following the massacre, Jallianwala Bagh became a symbol of colonial brutality and Indian resilience. Today, it is a national memorial, with a monument commemorating those who lost their lives. The bullet marks on the walls and the Martyrs' Well stand as poignant reminders of the tragic event.
The Jallianwala Bagh massacre remains one of the darkest episodes in British colonial history and a pivotal moment in India's journey towards freedom.
