Very excited to have Harinder Singh back on our show again. He serves as the Senior Fellow, Research & Policy at the Sikh Research Institute (SikhRI). He is a widely respected educator, activist, author, and thinker. His current focus is on developing critical thinking for Sikh institutions via the State of the Panth report series and developing open-source decoding of Guru Granth Sahib in contemporary Panjabi and English for a global audience.
He has also authored Emperor-Prophet: Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib: Its Language & Grammar, and Sikhi: Faith & Followers. Harinder Singh holds a BS in Aerospace Engineering, MS in Engineering Management, MPhil in Guru Granth Sahib, and a Diploma in the Persian Language. He currently resides in the United States with his family.

At 1:24:38, you’ve mentioned ‘Guru Ram Rai Ji’ mistakenly. Ram rai ji was son of the Guru but not the Guru.

As a Punjabi Hindu, both the conversations with Harinder Singh Ji helped me remove a lot of my mental barriers. I have realized that Ram Rajya and Khalsa Raj are exactly the same things.
Tamilians and North Indians are fighting over which language is the oldest, Let's promote Gurmukhi Punjabi since it is the latest script (Problem Solved) and is native to India. Gurus gave us exactly a new institution on which Hinduism is based. A lot of traditional Indian practices are not relevant today since no one has an explanation for them.
Let's build our Nation keeping Sikhi at the center.

Rightly said, what the innocent Sikhs suffered through after the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984 was an atrocity and wrong. It also still reverberates to this day and has created a schism and mistrust between us. But unfortunately the Sikhs who were influenced by Bhinderwale also practiced murder and terror against innocent Hindus in Punjab up until the 1990s. Most of them have also not come to terms with groups such as Babbar Khalsa which masterminded the Air India flight 182 bombing and is still active currently. I hardly ever see any of them apologizing for these acts of violence and murder. Typically it is only Hindus who feel guilt and shame about what happened to the Sikh community during the 80s.

The Vidha Sagar was imagination of Kesar S Chibber . Nothing else . He wrote Banslinama of the Gurus genealogy but Chibber himself was believer of the Hindu Avtar’s so he wrote Gurus as the re-incarnation of the Hindu Avtar’s . He wrote also that Guru Gobind Singh wrote 400 Kg big Granth Vidya Sagar . Chibber wrote in 1769 , 61 years after the heavenly demise of the tenth master . He said it is confirmed but my imagination. None of the contemporary writers of the Gurus era , Bhai Nand Lal and Senepeth wrote but never mentioned the Vidya Sagar .

I am Sikh..Living in USA…You did good job with this episode…I watched the whole thing at once..I am glad..new generation is giving the respect that’s been missing and trying to understand why there is a gap between people or groups or religious beliefs when at the end we all believe in One ☝️.. I won’t lie and say there is nothing to fix and everything is perfect when it’s not…Personally…I was very sad couple days ago at work when I saw my Hindu..Muslim and even some Sikhs dancing on Bollywood songs and celebrating Christmas when I was remembering chote Sahibzade’s sacrifice and what Guru Gobind Singh ji did to Protect Hindu religion…I asked One of my Hindu Coworker if he knew who was Hind Di Chadr? He had no Clue but he knew about Jesus and Christmas..But what he didn’t know why I was sitting alone…Sad..not because Guru Sahib jI sacrificed his whole family to protect their religion but because they had no knowledge of What is happening in a Sikh’s life While these people were celebrating Christmas…Jesus died for his people.. I am not against others to celebrate but at least as Hindus and Sikhs we should focus on who died for US.. when Kashmiri Pandits came to Guru Tegh Bahudar ji Kol and asked to protect their religion.. List is too long full of people who sacrificed for us..Few are 4 Sahibjade.. As a person of Indian origin and a Hindu who was outside India during the 1984 genocide instigated and caused by the Congress party i apologize to all Sikh people. I agree the Indian government must cause to form a reconciliation committee to bring about an understanding between Indian and the Sikh people. Sikhs are loyal, nationalistic and patriotic Indians. We maynot have a Hindu majority had it not been for the Sikh community. We Hindus must be appreciative and respect the Sikh community.

Please take time to learn about sikhism and if you read 52 dictates of guru Gobind Singh ji for Sikhs to learn about all religions, politics and never be slave to any body. I think it was Guru Gobind Singh ji who choose Ponta Sahib Gurudwara. At that place there is no sound of Yamuna river as it used to disturb the poets so Guru Gobind Singh ji silenced the river there.
Guru Gobind Singh ji chose this place built fort there wrote Jap Sahib Gurbani there and eldest son of Guru Sahib Baba Ajit Singh ji was born there who martyred at Chamkaur Sahib fighting with 10lacs along with rest 40 sikhs

Don’t over generalize. It’s good that you had a cordial and an exemplary interaction with the Sikhs you met. However, they are not all like this. Some can be rude, some can be flippant, some can even be obnoxious and full of arrogance and pride. Learn to discern between hype and reality. This adulation of Sikhs by Hindus is only a one way street. They don’t feel the same way about you or me. It’s the bitter truth. Better to learn this now rather than discover it later.

As a Sikh this was a podcast I would spread across for people to understand the true essence of Sikhi. He has although touched the surface but he has done it in much more pious way than most do in this day and age. Taking away a lot from this.
Ranveer, you have done a great job at asking questions that are relevant to these times. The part about the grieviences of our community needs to be explained more. But that is for another aspect of Punjab. These issues if brought out to the nation will make people understand why we stand up and feel frustrated when we get labeled as Khalistanis for democratically asking for our rights.
And if I might suggest, if you could do an episode on issues of punjab. Water sharing and green revolution effects, under development, the 1984 and beyond period....you might see that actually Punjab is struggling ( including non sikh pinjabis) to make sense why a strong punjabi community is not able to crack it. We are as a 'punjabi' community very entrepreneurial, yet we are struggle. Punjab looks like it is shining because it's people are not giving up but internally our issues are now coming to the fore with drugs and unemployment eating up the youth that doesn't fly away to the foreign lands.

Sir do visit any Gurudwara sahib at any time, right from cleaning your footwear to serving you food at clean and hygienic Langhar halls without asking you your identity related to caste, is one of the teachings of Shri Guru Nanakji that is followed selflessly even today throughout the globe.
A small example of this is during the Pandemic Bangla Sahib Gurudwara used to provide free meals to nearly 1lac people daily. Not only the Sikhs are brave and fearless warriors, their generosity is also commendable.

Thank you for sharing the series on Sikhism. Gratitudes and Pranaam to Hari Singhji. I am not a Sikh but I love to go to GuruDwaras because when the Granthees start to sing, I experience the God. It just pulls me to a different plane. I could see Gurus come to welcome me. I could see Guru Gobind Singh walking around during that time. When I went, I did not even know how He looks like. His sord seemed like a five feet long. He looked like a king. Not like a Guru to me. His hair was jet black. Light came out of Him. Non stop tears flow from my eyes. I can't really explain how I felt. I don't get such experience anywhere else. ..... Wahe Guru ji Khalsa! Wahe Guruji ki Fateh!

This was a very enlightening conversation, so much depth of knowledge. I was born a Sikh in Punjab in 1985 and at age 6 my parents sent me to live in England with other family. Hence I've felt disconnected all of my life including from Sikhi, I realised as I got older that they likely did it out of fear of what was happening there at the time. That injustice had so many unknown knock-on effects on the Sikh community. I hope one day it will all be resolved and healed, but given our history it feels like our lives will always be in some form of conflict. Such is the way I guess.
I married to a sikh, I love their culture and the best part even after my marriage my family support me to follow my religion which is hindu plus I didn’t even change my name. I felt goosebumps while listening to this podcast. Sikhi is such a beautiful religion. It has such beautiful principles. I regret that I cannot read Gurumukhi and thus can ot read the Guru Granth Sahib. The history of Sikhs really made my blood boil with respect and reverence. Sikhi is a living example of what it takes to fight against injustice. It is like a living breathing organ that can fight against injustice in even modern times . We are all living in kalyug but occasionally God sends people like the 10 Gurus to guide us back to the correct path. Despite having their teachings, we never learn, we never learn! Yes after 1984, some Hindus were killed by militants, but they had declared open warfare against India due to 1984. Militants were captured, tortured and killed brutally . But we sikhs do not complain about that. They chose that life. We are angry about the innocents killed by govt.

The beauty of sikhi is that you can be sikh or muslim or hindu and all sit together and listen to it and relate to it.

I remember when I fought with my cousin over Guru Gobind Singh being a Bihari and Not Punjabi. He gave me all sorts of reason but even he couldn’t deny the fact that there was a huge impact of Braj Bhasha in his writings. I found this Video on a day when in morning I was describing a Muslim friend what real Sikh is. I was talking about exact same things with my Muslim friend. I am glad to see someone else has same thoughts. It’s crucial to spread the right information. I am a Sikh woman who grew up reading stories of Gurus and now teaching my children what Gurus really gave us. Importance of shabad and bani and most importantly the message of equality that gurus gave us. Serve everyone regardless of religion, cast or status. That’s real Sikh. Thanks Ranveer to showing this to the world by inviting right people. 🙏
My grandfather use to tell me about 1984 issue he said politicians and other people who are on high post just order things no matter what and they live in luxury only we people suffer. We are Hindu and in Bihar when this happened my Grandfather gave shelter to his sikh students and one of the family who lives us nearby. He was insulted by many people but still he did because he said Dharm koi bhi ho banda Marne ke baad ek hi bagwan ke paas jaata hai. Woh ek hai. And that's true i occasionally visits harmandir Sahib and i really use to sit in the corner and listen Gurubani with my heart. And i am proud that i belong to the land of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

I am not blaming any community or religion but i have recently seen some people they are blindly following government who is brainwashing them in the name of religion, spreading hate among communities, giving hate speeches , attacking holy shrines of other religion or community, giving rape and kidnap threats to the mother and daughters of other communities
See I believe all religions have different rituals and cultures and they should be preserved but spreading hate or blindly supporting the government and and considering one community to be superior or other to be lower i don't think this is good

So attacking any holy shrine like mosque,gurudwara,temple,church is same as attack on the house of our own creator only so it's not just a religious attack on any particular community it's a attack on humanity
Humanity is the biggest religion.
These religious hates are mainly being spread by people who don't even have no knowledge instead consider their community to be superior are brainwashed by government and some leaders to attack other communities
I think these religious issues would never occur if everyone could understand these things and worked for humanity.
I never doubted Sikhs. We bow down to Nanak and his childrens for their sacrifices. Hamare bihar me to Nanak aur Narayan me fark hi nahi. He is my own. And all those injustices down to Sikhs by Congress in 1984 resulted in their wipe out.
As a Sikh I am delighted, not only by the answers, but by the questions. Ranveer, you did a great job guiding, interviewing and allowing Harinder Singh to speak freely, providing him a very supportive space. Excellent information. Harinder is Very knowledgeable and wise. He has studied Sikhi deeply. More: He knows how to speak about his knowledge very eloquently while not overwhelming his audience. Excellent choice of an interviewee for such a beautiful subject. The very complexity of Sikhi and its depth makes the simplicity of the practice very difficult to communicate effectively. Most discourses slip into mysticism making the concepts obscure. It is very skillful to take complex topics and explain them clearly as Harinder has done. Thank you for this upload. I have already shared it much.

When I first saw this episode I didn’t like his comment about Guru Gobind singh ji being Bihari but now I feel that we punjabis feel like we have monopoly on Gurus. If there was census in that time he would have entered his identity as Bihari because he was born in Bihar but then he moved to Punjab. Bihar has a sacred space because Guru Gobind singh ji was born there. ❤
He is so eloquent, well read. I knew a lot more from him which ideally should have been taught to the followers of faith from an early age. I m glad to have listened to TRS show and it helped scratch the surface of the portal and it now intrigues me to explore more.
So much to learn. This changes many of mine and others narrative about Sikhi. India is the cultural cradle of this world and Sikhi is one of the biggest contributor in this. Love & Respect ❤

From a Sikh perspective, I feel getting Harinder Singh back will be important. Don't worry about times...I.broke this up over a couple of weeks so it isn't a problem. If you do hindi or any other language please ensure subtitles translation in a English that way the whole world can watch. Thank you and please keep it up on Sikh history. With current affairs and recent history the Sikh narrative ironically in India seems to be lost. I could be wrong. Thank you both!
