I’m autistic, and I have Aspergers, ADD, ADHD, short term memory loss and I had the outstanding opportunity to meet and talk to Temple Grandin one on one; Temple and me connected with each other on a different level through our experiences she was extremely understanding and kind with me. I was diagnosed at around age 13 I think and that’s when all my “behaviors” made sense, throughout kindergarten until high school I was bullied physically and verbally for my differences some people even mimicked my stimming movement’s in order to make fun of me. My dad raped and emotionally abused me but I forgive him and I pray for him to know Jesus, even though I’ll always live with the trauma. I’m a visual person and I love taking nature pictures and writing poetry.

Definitely nice to see a positive teacher who nurtures and believes in her, especially when they didn't have all the awareness of autism back then we have today.

At the Golden Globes they announced the names of best actress in a TV movie or serial, including Claire Danes. As they cut from actress to actress, you could tell the other actresses knew DAMN WELL that they weren't going to win. Claire Danes NAILED this part. I'm talking tape-measure tater.

I know it's almost always a controversial casting choice, but this is one of the better performances I've seen of a neurodivergent character/person by a neurotypical performer, and I feel like it's because she plays the character the way one would play any other: by acting out what she's thinking instead of what she's doing. She's not just doing a series of tics and habits, everything she's doing is based on how this character's brain works: the way she kind of wades through the crowd of students at the beginning so she doesn't get overwhelmed by all the activity going on around her, her lack of a sense of personal space and the way she bolts out of the room when she gets a clear idea in her head because she wants to see it through before it goes away, the angry frustration when she fails because she's literally used all of her mental effort just to get it done once, exacerbated by the fact that not only does she have autism but she is a literal child (teenagers are children, I won't hear anything to the contrary) and her preemptively covering her ears in anticipation of a noise she knows will be too loud to handle while otherwise being part of the activity because she knows that what she can handle is different from other people's, even if they can still cooperate.
I feel like a lot of well-intentioned attempts at positive representation are informed by a sense of wanting to be respectful, but they tend to be sentimental at best and cynical at worst. With the exception of Leo DeCaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, none of those other performances have the kind of empathy that this one has, and I mean that in the most literal sense because, again, the actress playing Temple is not just performing what the character is doing, she's performing what the character is thinking, the way one should perform any character.

I should mention that I'm speaking a lot from observation myself. I went to special ed school and many of my closest friends are on the spectrum, including two who were interviewed for this movie and my current girlfriend, but I, myself, have never been diagnosed with ASD (I've been told I have a "personality disorder," whatever that means, but I'm not convinced, even if I'm not about to armchair diagnose myself).

They also look so much alike. It was necessary to put physical features above disability with the casting. I have an ASD.

    • @gabe_s_videos

@@sadem1045 I disagree. She could've been Dr. Grandon's spitting image and still not embodied the character well enough to convince me that she was who she was. I don't know Dr. Grandon personally but, like I said, I know a lot of people on the spectrum (again, two of them were interviewed by the actress) and she reminds me as much of THEM as she does Dr. Grandon.

Another Aspie here. What a brilliant and moving scene. I know that frustration over my sixty years extremely well. Sometimes, it has to be compressed and sent out in tiny explosive packages. Preferably when we're by ourselves and nobody else is likely to observe or overhear us. We'll be back to rainbows and sunshine very soon. The boiler just needs to simmer for a bit! - Then we'll be back online.

I have autism and several mental health conditions and I had a boss a few years ago who was a lot like this teacher. When I was a kid I actually took martial arts classes from the person who would eventually be my boss. One day when I was employed at his martial arts school as a childcare worker I was sitting in his office talking to him. He told me I'd changed a lot over the years, that I handled stress better. He's a good man and I'm still in contact with him.
