Thanks Gary, I have an 11 ton shop press that I've converted to air / hydraulic. I bought it for straightening motorcycle forks. You've just given me a whole whack of new use for it!
What a fascinating and informative video! I've very nearly finished constructing my own small Smithy. I've wondered about getting a small(ish) flypress, but didn't really know what could be done with one. Now I know. Thanks!!
This tool seems to be one of the most vertisle tools of its time and even now. This plus a chambersburg blacksmith power hammer and anvil id argue were a blacksmiths most used/valued tools.
very underestimated tool gary ,at one time these machines were the backbone of british engineering ,factories were full of them all doing different jobs ,thanks for showing .Ant .
Thanks for the ideas I've had one for years and haven't done much with it undue rested bit of kit in a workshop a brilliant versatile British invention millions made sadly most scrapped due to fall in industry the Black Country was glutted with them in there industries so rescue one if you can people tooling them up for something is invention itself and the skies the limit thanks again for making the vid ant from Wales UK
I lived and worked in the west Midlands, I cry in despair knowing what has happened to British industry, those left there, keep the faith, everyone else buy British

Hi Gary, any idea for a good source of steel block to make something that can be used as a fly press flattener (i want use it instead of a power hammer). Any help will be really appreciated.
I don't know what part of the world you're in but my first stop is always the scrap yard. They usually have lots of stuff that can be utilized. Only problem is sometimes you don't know what the steel is and can be a problem to weld.
Gary Huston thanks Gary, i live in london but find all the scrap yards around here will not let public in anymore. Have you ever experienced this? I will try and find one that will let me in.

I guess you could make one but the time and money involved would be quite high. They are so redily available i would just go and but one and start using it!
sadly i couldn`t find anything near here, and believe me i have searched. i`ve found one but is some 200 miles away and the cost of shipping is just too much. i`ll keep trying but in the meantime i`ll try to find if there are plans online (and make a cost analysis), do you know of any?. if this fails i`ll try to design (in the dark...) one, the one you showed seems the way to go for a shopmade unit (double post). thanks for your reply. pete

No! Too much time and hammering, very labour intensive. If I was a hobby smith I could have a go in all my spare time but I'm too busy making a living!
I know! I wanted to wirebrush it, wipe it with solvent, mask, and paint that thing so bad it hurt. LOL Maybe he could hire a lad to clean it up for him and paint it.

Great video, Getting my flypress this saturday. Your press is called an A-frame and is indeed often more powerfull than the open types

No, never had that problem, they need to let you in to take the scrap! Then just ask for what you want.
