    I finally hear someone talking about the verb as a noun structure cuz I've seen many of my friends struggle to know when they should or should not use the gerund form of a verb; another insight could be that whenever you use a preposition you MUST use a gerund after. For instance: with the verb read
    When reading
    About reading
    For reading
    Of reading
    And so on and so forth.

    • @caenieve
      @caenieve Před 2 lety +1

      Essentially, these are two entirely different constructions which happen to share a “to”.
      You know that modal verbs like “want” or “hope” take a verb in the “to”-infinitive, as in “hope to see you”.
      “look forward to”, however, is not a modal verb, so it can’t be followed by an infinitive - it’s an idiomatic lexical verb followed by a noun.
      “look forward to tomorrow” works, because “tomorrow” is a noun; “look forward to see” does not, as “see” is a verb. You have to turn it into a noun with the suffix -ing.
      It might help to imagine the phrase as having an unspoken “the event/act of” as in “I look forward to [the event/act of] seeing you”. Don’t actually use that version, it sounds very weird in actual English, but it shows how “seeing you” is a noun.
      The only time I would ever say “look forward to see” is where “look forward” is literal, i.e. point the eyes forward, and “to” means “in order to”, “so that you can”.

    It's important to remember all these rules,because they are tricky.
    As you said,it can be a verb by form,but is acting like a noun.It's about the rule number three.This class is so important.We have to practice them.
    Thanks a lot.

    Antonio, sos el mejor profesor del mundo, con vos en un placer aprender. Tus videos generaron en mí la motivación para volver a estudiar inglés. Hoy mismo voy a seguir tu consejo de ver películas con subtítulos en inglés. Grazie mille!!!!!!!! (y algún día seguiré con el italiano, que es la lengua más dulce).

    i usually would give time listening to english tutorial but i find most of them teaches modern pronunciation and just conversational english instead of teaching formal english. i am a filipino, english is our second language sometimes i doubted that our english is outdated because the english that we learned from school were so formal but now it facinates me after watching your very clear pronunciation and with your proper grammar of which these days were no longer given importance. ty😊
