It really is. Jung once said about psychedelics "Be wary of unearned wisdom" and to some extent some of this stuff that JP is revealing, partly because he utilizes Jung's spirit so much in his teachings, feels that way to me. Periodically he will say something so revelatory that I have to stop the damn video like I'm in the middle of a Steven King novel and what I just read frightened me to the point where I need to take a break and get some fresh air.

Richard Sneed Along this line of thought, he says the "old you" must die. Can someone describe this? I have helluva time understanding this idea, let alone, a method for dying while transforming.

Your comment is 9 months old but I'm going for it.
What JBP means by "the old you must die" is that you must give up who you are for who you must become. Do not be attached to any part of who you are in your quest to become better, because anything you hold onto as your "identity" could be exactly what keeps your from becoming who you are trying to become.
Sometimes learning something new has cascading effects on your belief systems and you need to question every aspect of yourself and your life and reshape it to fit the new information in a way that makes sense. You need to be honest with yourself about your attachments to ideas and let them go to get closer to the truth. JBP often refers to this process as your death and rebirth, like Jesus on behalf of mankind or a phoenix.

Conformity is dangerous and I think it's in full bloom with idealistic groups like liberalist potheads and full fledged conservatives. When you settle for who you are and not challenge yourself to be better, or the worse version of that mentality, the denial of your potential as a human, it becomes a pathological part of your personality, and it affects everyone around you in small ways. That's why choosing friends are important because some friends pull you down instead of challenging you.
Peterson's lectures are one of the most valuable resources I've ever stumbled upon. Every lecture leaves me with an abstract sense of fulfillment and the motivation to be a better person.

It's unimaginable to see that such a wizard is faced with unnecessary obstructions while he could make this world more intelligent and brighter - hundreds at a time.
41:26-44:14 Maybe up to 45:55 - This whole section about "the little pit", suffering and putting yourself back together; destruction of the old paradigm, then building a new, wiser, better version of your self... This is worth listening to a few times, particularly if you're someone who's had issues with depression.
One of the major features for me, and many others, is that feeling of being lost every time you get knocked back; you loose your long term perspective. It would be great to have a little boiled down sound-bite or "mantra", something that just summarises this section and reminds you that it's a transformative period. I think it would help a lot of people get through it quicker, and come out stronger.

@@John_Leonard_Hart_IIII I think of nihilism as the natural progressive state that the pathway of hedonism ultimately leads to. By the way I agree with you, I like the way explain it as I think that frustration is the inevitable outcome when one wholly subscribes to such a philosophy.

54:50 when Jordan talks about snake phobia possibly being built right into you - I have seen this in my 6 month old son, first hand. I had a black belt that I thought he would be interested in inspecting (he's VERY curious and exploritory), and when I tried to hand it to him, he jerked back in terror. I've never seen him do that before. Ever. It took him a second to build up the courage to reach out and touch it, and he inspected the end, as if to confirm that it was an inanimate object. He's NEVER seen a snake before. Ever. It led me to believe that the fear must be primordial. So interesting.
I never had the grades enough to be able to apply for Psychology, so these videos make me very happy! They are incredibly useful for anyone I think. Because learning about how you work/humans work and why is something everyone should be interested in, in order to make the world a better place by bettering yourself and understanding others
Second time going through these videos. I miss this Jordan Peterson. What a phenomenal lecturer. I hope he recovers his health and gets back to what he does best: teach.

In Switzerland (eth, Zurich, architecture) it was common. Also lineups for entry and seating positions. Always full with hallway overflow. The quality was that high.

I'm a 56 yr old man and every time I here Mr Peterson speak it fills me with a sense of pride and honor, I get that feeling when your country wins a gold medal at the Olympics and they play the Canadian national anthem.

Same. Wish I would have had the epiphany that if I cared about school I would have learned so much. I didn't, and out if ego I went the exact opposite way. If I was academically inclined from the get.. welp, at least these are free, books aren't though.

Yes, definitely more interesting on a novel level. Having an understanding in STEM field, however, can help you sift through what science & math/statistics are valid in the humanity area.
It's one of the great tragedies of the humanities in the modern age is that many adherents to the humanities are fond of mis-interpreting stats/facts, accidentally incorporating biases into their studies, or even calculating the correlations wrong in the first place.
And all too often now, as with the *radical* left academics, stats and facts are *purposefully* misused to pedal some political agenda.
Thanks so much for posting these lectures online. I find myself learning a great deal with each one that I watch.

Learning these things from him makes me think that one of the ways in which he gets his point across so good is by implementing the archetypal type of a person who is right in his character when explaining, also the reason people like him so much. If you look at any movie where they show a misunderstood scientist that in the end was right even tough no one believed him you'll see some behaviour patterns. Or at least that's my way of understanding the lesson

"The fundamental task of the emerging human being was to extricate themselves from their family."
This brings to mind the so-called "rebellious phase" of teenagers. Perhaps it is not anomalous, pathological, or otherwise deviant behaviour, but an evolutionary mechanism indicative of the development of independence from the family. It may be that it should therefore not be repressed or necessarily punished, but guided along healthy avenues. I don't really know anything about child-rearing or the psychology of families, but does this make any sense?
Not at all. Growing up and being independent is an obvious function of life, but extricating yourself from your family is not a healthy thing to do. The destruction of the family is the down-fall of society. Hence the proliferation and popularization of porn and sodomy which coincides w/divorce, broken familes and the ME generation we are living in
+Occhi Blu -- Depending on the family situation it could definitely be the healthy thing to do. Otherwise, I don't mean to imply that completely extricating oneself from one's family is necessary or necessarily the goal. Rather it is the demonstrative ability to live apart from the family and make decisions for oneself, preferably responsibly. At least, encouraging that should be the goal of parenting.
I'd have to defer to someone like Jordan on the reasons for divorce. I think that an addiction to porn while married is a symptom of existing problems, though, and less so a cause -- but then certainly an exacerbating factor. Sodomy is either simply sex enjoyed by [hopefully] both or male homosexual sex, for which I find no objection in the modern context. Homosexuals in heterosexual marriages will inevitably find a lack of happiness within the relationship. The "me" generation is perhaps more a result of the over-coddling of children, of trying to tell everyone that they are special.
I agree about the over coddling, and I am fine w/Gay marriage. That being said, I do think a mother and father is an obvious ideal example for parents in a family. I also think the me generation is due more to the culture created by an ever evident disintegration of the traditional family and everyone's willingness to accept it. Strong families our the foundation of a strong society. So when the corporate world takes the mother from the home and largely drives down wages of the middle class so one parent can no longer provide for a familt with 2-3 kids, it is left to the deteriorating public schools to raise them. On another note I sincerely think that there is weaponized culture out there that tries to undermine the core values of what used to be a largely Christian Society (morals,values) I do not believe one should be religious or one should push religion but it is obvious by the movies music and entertainment out there now that there is a HUGE shift going on. And many kids new to this brave new world are coming into this battle for their little brains ill-equipped due to over coddling and a foggy understanding of what is fundamentally right and wrong. And the media and corporate world would love this no other way
+Occhi Blu -- The value of the traditional mother-father parental structure is difficult for me to assess. I've really not read much about it beyond the sound-bites from far on either end of the argument published in the media. I can't say that I've known any same-sex couples with children, the closest I've known being a single gay father. None of this provides me with anything useful.
As for the rest, I pretty much agree. Good parenting is of prime importance in a child's development and that cannot be achieved by letting popular media instruct them. As you say, though, it's difficult for families to afford to always have one parent there for their children. My nephews are pretty lucky, in this regard, having two sets of grandparents in close proximity to take over whilst their parents pursue their careers.
When he says "extricate themselves from their family" I believe he is talking about the individuals ability to live independently of the family structure. Meaning the individual can evaluate the family from an outside perspective, the parts of the family structure that are supportive can be honored and the parts that are destructive can be ignored. Some toxic pathological family may have to be avoided all together.
For example: One of my relatives was very wise in most of his thinking except he was also racist against black people. A person who can extricate themselves recognizes the wisdom without also becoming racist.
If a relative in the family is known to be abusive, the best course is to isolate them unless they are willing to do the work necessary to change.
Gosh when I see that I can be listening for three or more hours and so much I have learnt in the last hours..... my hunger of knowledge has just explode!!!! Thank you so much Professor Peterson...
I hope you truly know how much you are a truly a gift to the world. When I first saw stumbled upon you, I didn’t like you but I listened to what you had to say anyways. I still do not agree with your views on women and white privilege, however, I am a better person because of you. I thought I was awesome but I had to face some real ugly things I didn’t realize about myself and not only did you hold a mirror and help me to see, you motivated me to be better. Thank you. I hope you believe your cult following. You deserve it.

At the end of this lecture you talk about the danger of parents who do everything for their children. I'm 26 and have some light fear and insecurity in my life as a result of being afraid to move forward without a hand to hold. What is the best way to go about breaking out of this pathological mold? Really appreciate everything you put up. I hope you win the good against injustice! MUCH LOVE!
I think these lectures (2016 and 2017) are arguably his best contributions, and I'm not belittling his other work.
I never paid attention in high school because I never knew how it would apply to my life. Although, my favorite class was Bible because it seemed to teach me ideas that I can practice in my life to improve my quality of living. After graduating , I've spent the last 3 years going through a transition learning phase about myself, and Mr. Peterson has helped me tremendously. I find myself day after day watching these lectures, just for the knowledge they hold. Seeing how in the present day, all of the drama against his license being revoked, this drives me to learn even more. If it is powerful enough, some people might try to get rid of it. Thankyou Mr. Peterson, may you live long and prosper.

Man, this guys impressive. His intelligence , sincerity, principles, ethics, and ability to convey information is incredible. I understand most of what he speaks about, have many of the same ideas and beliefs, but wish I could speak and convey my own opinions, knowledge, beliefs, etc. as well as him. And, it's not just schooling or his educational background , I've grown up around many well informed and well educated individuals ( at 45 years of age), but absolutely none explains information and beliefs any where close to as well as Mr. Peterson. Its fascinating. I got into some legal troubles a couple of decades ago and, it through a wrench into my being a productive member of society. And, I was fairly intelligent and hard working. Did almost 9 years, for something I actually didn't do, basically came down to being accused and I wouldn't rat on my brother and some of my friends. It is what it is. My point that I'm going for, after doing those many years in prison, you learn ALOT of things about man, human nature, etc..If, hypothetically speaking, Jordan Peterson was given a prison sentence for say something he didn't do, whatever, he would be accepted by a majority of the inmates and, most would befriend him and protect him. Mr. Peterson might actually find that interesting, lol. The guy is fucking sharp, his sincerity and conviction shines through. On of the most impressive people I've ever seen. I'm not a fanboy type of person. If my favorite rock band, author, actor, whatever walked past me in the casino or hotel lobby, there would be a 98 % probability that I would absolutely not go up to the person and talk to them, or ask for an autograph, etc.. But, if I saw Jordan Peterson, I'd make a b line directly to him and introduce myself and thank him for what he does. I suffer from some depression, I guess we all more or less do but, I'm curious what makes him depressed? Anyway, love this fucking guy!!
Jordan B. Peterson fooled me into studying psychology. That was until i discovered that psychology is not like this, it`s full of orderly people. All my teachers are orderly, linear thinking people. That makes it boring for me. So I went into litterature instead, in that field I can use my creative and analytical capacities, something I could not do in psychology.
I think without a proper structure you lost in the abstraction, so without necessary knowledge you can fill up unknown with some intuition, but I have a strong guess, that used old road" is have a reason to stay in, to look from a stable position.(perspective) btw I'm not sure about, actually I dont learn psychology but I belive I have a relatively strong sense, and what I see, it's terrified me how we can change overtime as we are in reaction with the circumstances. So with my small knowledge and even smaller" English I say there is a reason maybe..something like that..=}

I hope that you have been able to improve your situation since the time you posted your comment. I have a lot of sympathy and respect for the Indian people. This is a good professor (watched a few 2015 lectures, starting in the middle).
My second degree is only core courses (electives completed) so, this is both relaxing and interesting.
