  • Featuring some of the biggest WWE stars of the attitude era, including The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, The Undertaker and Chris Jericho. And wrestlers from WCW and ECW in Rob Van Dam, Tazz, Booker T and DDP. The WWF Invasion storyline, which unfolded in 2001, was an ambitious and highly anticipated angle in professional wrestling. The concept pitted the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) against wrestlers from the defunct World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) promotions, merging the latter two into one faction known as "The Alliance." Despite its potential, the Invasion storyline ultimately fell short of expectations and is widely regarded as a failure.

      I've never cared about storylines in my whole life. Even when I was a kid. All I cared about was the actual wrestling. I either wanted to see very technical and realistic wrestling or super wild hard core wrestling. I didn't care who was wrestling or why as long as they were good. Hugh Morris did the most unsafe moonsault possible in his debut. The last thing you want is to fall short and have your knees land on your opponent. It should be body to body.
    Lots of people don't realise how much force comes down on your knees, shins and feet when landing a moonsault. It can hurt like hell just doing the move. I wouldn't wanna be under that impact.

    I understand they didnt want to absorb the crappy WCW contracts....but what are we really talking about? 1-2 million per year per wrestler MAX. So you get Goldberg, Hogan, Hall, Nash, and Sting. 10 million at the most....and you reveal 1 guy every month or so and build up the biggest Survivor Series/RoyalRumble/WrestleMania in history. It could have been the biggest thing in wrestling history. Hell. Go further. Pick up the next 10 guys for a mil each. 20 million total. You would have made it back. Instead, they did it half assed. And its been half assed ever since.

    • @devious187
      @devious187 Před 10 měsíci +4

      The problem with that is that those guys had guaranteed contracts, meaning they were getting paid whether they wrestled or not... I don't know what job you have, but if you suddenly had the chance to be paid the same to not work, wouldn't you take it? Pro wrestling is a hard business, and to guys like Hogan, Nash, Hall and the like, it was an extended paid vacation. There was just no way they were gonna give that up, especially knowing that they'd have to put over the WWF guys in the Invasion angle, since Vince wasn't likely to allow anything but pure WWF dominance. Honestly unless you really wanted to see Sting and Goldberg and guys like that buried, I think the Invasion angle we got was about as good as it ever could be. Plus, if Vince had brought those guys in with those huge contracts, he'd have to re-negotiate and give raises to all the WWF guys who wouldn't be making anywhere near as much. The real cost would be a lot more than you might think.

    • @Matt-cr4vv
      @Matt-cr4vv Před 5 měsíci +1

      The major names from WCW like Goldberg, Hogan, Nash and Hall all had guaranteed contracts that AOL had to pay out. Hall and Nash both had roughly $2M or so coming to them to stay home Goldberg had $2.5M and $3.5M. Not sure what hogan had. So to get them to come in do you think they’re going to choose to work for the same money when they can stay home and make that money? If you want to get them to come in right away you’re gonna have to pay them a higher number that makes it worth being in the road full time again instead of earning seven figures to stay at home. If you could take a year away from work or work for the year and you’ll make the same amount either way 99% or people are gonna stay home and collect the check. If you want someone to come back right away it’s gonna need to be worthwhile so it’s going to be expensive to get them to come in. Then you have to ask yourself how many of your current guys are you now going to need to give bigger guarantees to because how do you think someone who stayed loyal and worked their ass off is going to feel if they see the guys who left at your lowest point walk in and earn downside guarantees they are multiples of whag you are getting? You’re gonna have to bring your current peoples guarantee up to those amounts of risk some bad morale. The true total cost of landing those guys right away would have been immense if you factor in all the increases that you’d have to be throwing out there. It was never as simple as people want to think it was

    If I was Vince, I would have waited until Hogan, Goldberg, Nash & Scott Steiner contracts ran out before starting the Invasion angle.. And just had the remaining WCW/ECW talent do house shows & train at OVW to learn the WWF ways of wrestling in the meantime.. There was no social media back then to spoil everything completely about WCW working with WWF.. Sure people who attended untelevised events would get an idea of what's going on, but this would at least give the WCW/ECW guys something to do while the tops stars are on vacation.. Maybe by then Chris Benoit, Eddie Guererro & Triple H would've been ready to return too.. Cena, Orton, Brock & Batista would've got involved as well.. HBK even.. They should've been more patience with the angle, instead of rushing everything.. This was a one-time opportunity...

      I disagree on the people didn’t know cause there was no social media. At the time I was a huge WWF fan, never watched WCW. A co worker actually told me about the purchase at work either Sunday or early Monday before the last Nitro, and they were very casual fans. I didn’t really believe them until I saw it on tv that Monday night. But it was big news then, word got around. Especially hardcore fans, they all knew before the simulcast shows took place, and there are signs in the crowds that prove it.

    • @Matt-cr4vv
      @Matt-cr4vv Před 5 měsíci +1

      Assuming you land all of those names because remember there was no guarantee that waiting for the big names to be available was no sure thing. So imagine if they had delayed things to have the top names involved and then they don’t land the names they delayed for or if those names knowing you had been waiting to finally do the storyline and decided to use that as leverage to negotiate their contract and bringing them in ends up being at the higher dollar figure that resets the pay scale and forces you to decide about losing the story entirely or give in to the contract demands and pay them at the higher levels than your normal and then have the drama from your existing top level people who now expect to get a downside at the level these guys are going to get. And then the biggest risk on waiting things out that people seemingly never want to acknowledge is if people would even care about the story two years after either of the brands have even had an event.
      Or you have to give those people immense guarantees to make it worthwhile for them to come and work right away instead of banking seven figures to relax at home and heal. And the major thing is always if you give a Goldberg a $6M downside to be worth passing earning $3-4M to just remain how does your current roster react to that and how many people do you give way larger downsides to now since you blew the normal pay scale out of the water? Or do you just do what the company did and make the best of what’s available and while it isn’t the dream people imagined it would be you still land one giant PPV buy rate with invasion and the rest of the PPVs until the end of the story all do what they did the prior year or a bit better? What they chose to do made sense because the unintended consequences and risks that came with paying the fright to land everybody right away or waiting it out and hoping that people even still care about the story to begin with is a major risk

      "There was no social media"...however, there was dirt sheets, magazines, hotlines and tons of insider news sharers that would have been dishing that hot scoop like crazy. The minimum impact would have been to keep it a hot topic and keep fan eyes peeled for guys showing up. The flip side is the likely issue of the whole angle getting stale before the the thing got to actually play out on TV.

    Dumbest thing they did as turn Austin heel AGAIN twice in one year.
    Had Vince bought Goldberg out of his contract and had him come out at the end of the PPV to turn the tide that would have been one hell of an end to the PPV. Saying that, by then they had already fucked up the invasion anyway…
    Even if they had all these stars Vince is so petty he still would have buried them.

      Wouldn’t have been worth it. People never want to acknowledge that when those guys all have seven figure guarantees for the upcoming year or so to stay home, spend time with their family, and heal up for awhile which was appealing if y out consider all of them were in their mid 40s or above and having the chance to rest up and still collect a giant check for awhile instead of having to be on the road every week when you can already feel fairly confident that you’re at a status that a healthy offer to join the WWF will be there after you take some time off so what motivation so there to rush things?
      People never want to realistically consider that if I can relax and spend time with my family while I collect $1.5M as I recharge my batteries what are you going to have to offer me that is going to be more appealing to me to return to being on the road every week and jumping back into the WWF grind instead? You’re gonna have to be ready to offer an amount of money that is an amount above what I can make to stay home because nobody in their position is going to jump back on the grind to make the same as what you’d earn to be home.
      But when the amount you’ll make staying home is so much money like they were getting, roughly in the $2M or so a year range, how much more does the other offer need to be to be worth it? It sounds crazy but let’s say you offer $3M to come back to work when I could make $2M at home is that going to be attractive because it isn’t going to change your life and how much more is it even going if to end up at when maybe you get that extra cheese but have to spend the money of being on the road 200+ days and how much is your net figure when you take out the cost of the hotels, rentals, food and the like? Realistically you’re gonna probably have to pay 2-3x to be worthwhile for thise guys and then consider if you pay them that hunger so do you now have to pay your existing top level people the same guarantee? What increased costs result from making that call? And then does it suddenly make the angle that much better and generate that much more money to be worth overpaying? I don’t think it would’ve been but I think it’s natural to just have that nagging what if
