The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I'm an old white guy now and I tried desperately to play piano for ten years when I was young. Later I learned I was terrible at math beyond basic algebra and basic geometry. It made me feel better (and more in awe) of musicians as its all mathematics. God bless these fellows for sharing their talents with the rest of us.

I agree with you. The dumbing down of the culture is pretty much complete.
But what's worse is that the lessons of WW2 have also been relegated to ancient history, thus setting the stage for a repeat of it.

I hear that. My dad took my brother an I to a Harlem Globe Trotters basketball game at Southwestern College in Point Loma in 1962. I was 8. Cab Calloway came out to mid court for halftime and accompanied himself on this beat up electric piano to "Minnie the Moocher." I knew that song from my mom's record collection and it was clear that most the crowd was familiar with the song as well. While all the other kids flooded the court after the game to get their favorite Globe Trotter's autographs. I spotted Cab over at the Globe Trotter's bench and went over to tell him how much I enjoyed his song. He flashed that world famous smile of his at me and enthusiastically shook my hand and asked me if I had heard his music before. I shook my head in the affirmative-too star-struck to say anything. I finally mustered the strength to say, "My mom has your record and I listen to it all the time." He put a hand on my shoulder and told me, "thank your mom for sharing my music with you." That was 60 years ago and I feel so blessed and privileged to have had that moment with a Cotton Club legend. Thank you, mom. I sure miss you.
