“Endless Story” for the first introduction ??
This song was the last song of their 10th anniversary concert. They are thanking the fans for continuing support. I believe an audience who hasn’t heard them will not understand the meaning behind this song.

I wonder if he thought, "I feel something with this one!" And thought it was a good idea, but yeah you need to understand them and the song to get that feeling. Weird choice and I knew it from the start.

Joel, if you're going to introduce someone to Band-maid using this song, you have to add context to the song instead of just saying "tell me what you think". This was the last song of a 33 song set. They had written this song as a "Thank-you" to their fans for sharing in their success and growth. It doesn't have the same meaning to anyone who isn't familiar with the band. But I will tell you, once they start learning/listening to more of their music, they will start to understand the significance of this song and have a greater appreciation for it. I appreciate what you do, but you should go into more detail about the bands/songs you promote to your friends. Thanks again! Cheers!

Again, I'm sorry, not really the best choice for a first time listener. The song and especially this performance are a thank you for the more experienced Band-Maid fan, who can really contextualize what is going on here. Why they are so emotional, what this song means to them and the audience and why it's in this specific spot in the concert. Especially when you're not able or don't want to give any context.
Their latest "Hate?" or "Don't you tell ME" would have been far better choices if you've never heard them before.

I was fortunate to have the Live Shinkiba Studio Coast version of Play as my introduction to Band-Maid followed by the Live Zepp Tokyo version of Puzzle as a one-two punch. So I can't think of a better intro to this great band than those two tracks from those particular shows. I believe it requires a minimum of five tracks to get a good grasp of the greatness of Band-Maid.

READING THE ENGLISH SUBTITLES WILL BRING TEARS TO MANY EYES. HOW COULD THESE GREAT ROCK GODDESSES LOVE US FANS SO DEARLY? WHEN SAIKI SANG "I LOVE YOU" IT WAS DIRECTLY FOR THE AUDIENCE. "ANOTHER DAY" IS HOPING TO SEE THE FANS AGAIN SOON. "LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL". MADE POSSIBLE BY THE FANS??? THE JAPANESE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS SUPER COMPETETIVE. MANY MANY GREAT BANDS DID NOT LAST LONG. THEIR MUSIC EDUCATION SYSTEM FOSTERS SOOOOOO MUCH TALENT FOR FANS TO CHOOSE FROM. THE STARS KNOW JUST HOW BRUTAL THE WORK CULTURE IS IN JAPAN FOR THE PEOPLE THAT BUY THE TICKETS, CDs AND MERCH. "WORK YOUSELF NEAR TO DEATH AND LET THE DEVIL TAKE THE HINDMOST" = JAPAN.

Joel's heart in rhe right place, and I wouldn't want to discourage him from introducing insiders to these great artists, but unfortunately he has a bad habit of Not picking the right introduction songs almost every time.. it's like he just picks a random song and throws it out there..no setup no back story, rarely a follow up.. makes me wonder how many of these folks would ever actually give bands like Lovebites, Nemophila, Band Maid, a second look afterward..

Sadly , although I'm glad you're introducing your friends in the US industry to some great bands , I can't argue with the vast majority of comments - SONG CHOICE !!! .
Why , especially when the system you use doesn't provide subtitles ( and you rarely provide any context ) choose a song which is ALL about context and emotion and was simply a thank you to their fans 🤷‍♂

This entire statement about Band Maid's performance exposes who managers are today. They are only economists. It's not them who discover talents. It's us, the listeners. Only our reactions draw their attention to the artist. And was the song good to show who the artist is? I think yes. This song is very feminine and full of musical taste. And the performance is straight from the heart!

You should definitely be showing "Hate?" to your friends as much as you've shown them "Domination". It's by far their most badass live performance to date. "Endless Story" is an amazing song, but since you are unable to provide subtitles, there can't be a true connection with Saiki's emotional performance. You show a lot of foreign bands to your industry friends. They should at least have the choice of having subtitles or not.

Welcome, Steve. (And thank you Joel!) You are embarking on (along with many others - nearly 200 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (130+ songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: czcams.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/video.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Shambles, Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits (AniMaid) like Sense, Glory and Unleash!!!!! (from their own Anime MV (series?)): czcams.com/video/7LB_EPS48HE/video.html)
And many songs are represented with over 50 well produced music videos. czcams.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYUJI concerts:
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” czcams.com/video/nAdWnIRjGak/video.html
     Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (February 14, 2020) “Domination” czcams.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/video.html
     ZEPP 2018 “Real Existence” czcams.com/video/-qQnKILR5u0/video.html
 Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and other full concerts are on bandmaidprime.tokyo, bili, and official Band-Maid’s DVD/BD/CD.
 “P and D⁴” Photo Collage videos at www.youtube.com/@PinDakaPanic810
And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:
 Shot by Pat McKee from their 2023 US tour concert in Detroit: czcams.com/video/DgxU-MVjta0/video.html
     See the Maids 2023 Rockville Festival’s short-set perfection performance: czcams.com/video/vjZkNeoGmhc/video.html
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “StarQueen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 30 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 32 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 32 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 33 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 31 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]
 BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the Acoustic Christmas 2021, ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo
 The Maids SOLD OUT 2023 US & Mexico tour wrapped up and was a fantastic success. And so many great live fancams to watch! Their playing and antics were as fresh and fun to experience from first show to last. BRAVO Band-Maid!!!!! In addition, their Japan tour finished up with 13 concerts, AND they’re writing and recording for their new album. Their 10th Anniversary Tour concluded at Japan’s 17,000 seat Yokohama Arena on Nov. 26, 2023 and in Hong Kong Dec. 21! And their latest 10TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR SPIN OFF concert at KT ZEPP YOKOHAMA on February 22, 2024, where they played songs not performed at the 10th anniversary tour final at Yokohama Arena, was SOLD OUT!

The last song of their 10th anniversary tour and an outpouring of thanks to the early fans that stuck with them, and those that (like you) have joined them along the way. Joel... thank you for continuing to show your friends Band-Maid. I know the purpose is to show your friends bands and songs you like but if you want to help promote the bands, I think it's time to do some surveys and ask the fans what the best song would be to show a new listener. You can include the songs you would want to show someone but let the fans decide which one would be the best one. It would be no different than back in the day when bands thought out a specific plan when they picked their singles to promote an album... even recently with Band-Maid, as this song "Endless Story" was the LAST of 4 video releases to promote the Blu-Ray/DVD of their Yokohama concert. Whatever you choose going forward, I'll be here for your Band-Maid videos... always hoping you chose the right ones, lol. 🤘

I don't agree with this common idea. It should not take the very best to hook a new fan. Band Maid fans keep saying there are no bad songs in their catalog. Don't you have faith in that idea?

@@DAVID-io9nj A song doesn't have to "wow" someone for it to be considered a good song but it does have to "wow" to get someone's attention. Imagine going to one restaurant and having a "good" meal and then going to another restaurant and having a "great" meal... which restaurant are you going to go back to? I admit, I'm a die-hard Band-Maid fan and I like every song... but I'm also realistic. I know that everyone who discovers Band-Maid for the first time, might not like every song or might not like them at all. My point is there are certain songs that are better suited as an "introduction song" to a new listener/viewer. Songs like "Endless Story" and even "About Us" in my opinion wouldn't be good "first" songs as they have a back story that new listeners probably wouldn't appreciate. I think the Band-Maid community has a pretty good idea of what songs would have that "wow" factor.🤘

      @DAVID-io9nj Před 2 měsíci +1

@@motley22crue The issue can be argued both ways. To use your analogy, first meal at a restaurant is the daily special: great 2nd meal at the same restaurant, something else, not so great. Disappointment. And then there is the question of the new potential fan's musical taste. Heavy metal head? Can't recommend About Us. Hates emo? Can't recommend Endless Story. I have lost count of the number of posts telling the same story. Heard Thrill or some other random Band Maid song and was interested enough to listen to more. The point is the first song wasn't "curated" for that person. They got that the music was different and interesting.

Now, I appreciate you not wanting to taint the reaction with too much information, but in this case, you maybe should have told him it was the final "thank you" song of a 33 song, 3-hour marathon concert celebrating their 10th anniversary. That might have nullified his ignorant criticism of "not letting loose". We both know that's a false criticism with BAND-MAID and most other Japanese rock/metal bands, in general.

If he's serious about exposing these bands to a wider audience, he could be doing a little bit more than just hitting play and saying "Tell me what you think." "Just being able to provide subtitles (If the guest wants them) for the foreign bands would go a LONG way. His song choices are also very random. Endless Story" is a great song, but not a good choice to introduce someone to BAND-MAID because they can't appreciate the emotional impact of the song yet (especially with no subtitles). Show the newbies that BAND-MAID rocks. It's what they do best.

And yes, I'm a huge BM fan. Seen them twice. Is this the most BM representative song? No. But I'd much rather someone hear even my least fav song than no song at all. I'm past trying to tell someone how to do their own channel.

    Yes, MISA MISA MISA!
Steve's observation that Japanese music and Japanese culture are contained: It's deep in their history. They tried to isolate themselves from Chinese and western influences; they tended to see themselves as unique and different from the rest of the world (and they are, thankfully!). Band-Maid says they like performing in the west because audiences are so much more exuberant (and the U.S. is not the _most_ exuberant - ¡saludos Ciudad de México!), and they notice the differences in the European countries where they've played. That said, this is their closing number and a love song modified to express their appreciation to their fans (a significant portion in this audience from overseas). It's not "typical" Band-Maid, and Band-Maid is much more contained than some Japanese bands, like Maximum the Hormone for example. Some of that is the personality of Kanami Tōno - she tends to write symphonically where parts are interrelated, and that means they don't do a lot of improvisation. I have no doubt that they _can,_ but they would have to leave room for it. Anyway, thanks again for exposing Band-Maid to your industry friends! Hot take: Stone Temple Pilots were light years ahead of Nirvana!

I totally agree, and I am not the biggest Band Maid fan. If this was the first song I ever heard, or it was Thrill (sorry to those who love that one), I probably would have said good musicians and a solid song, but then I would have moved on to not hear anything else. But I think my first song/video was Domination live. Or maybe Freedom. And it piqued my interest. So far, some I like, some not as much. Having that experience and reading the comments on CZcams, I now have an appreciation for Endless Story and what it means to the band and the fans, which I would not have had if it was my first song.

BAND-MAID isn’t a one style band, so maybe show them a second song, in a different style. You had a guest, in the past, that said Saiki had no presence, based on the Thrill MV. She brings grown men to tears with song. Maybe this would have changed their mind.

@@patron40silver I'm not saying he's doing it wrong necessarily, but he could be doing it better. Nothing that I've seen being suggested is unreasonable or exceedingly difficult. Put a little more thought into song selection. The fans are doing it for him if he just reads the comments. Subtitles. 95% of reaction channels have no issues providing subtitles when they react to foreign bands. A good amount of the bands he's showing his friends are foreign bands. Considering that the language barrier is usually the biggest obstacle, you'd think subtitles would be a priority. He could provide more info on the artists but that's not as big of an issue with me considering how many different artists are involved. Some people could be nicer about their suggestions though. At least be respectful about it.

You can say this the way Steve Stewart does here. But is Steve aware that he is making his judgment based on the view of the western music industry? The hippies shocked adults at the end of the sixties with their style and appearance. The hippies were replaced by hard rock, punk, heavy metal and grunge. All these young people who wanted to shock their parents for decades have now become people who believe that only their view of things is the last word in wisdom. Today's generation between the ages of 50 and 80 demanded tolerance of new music styles from their parents back then and over time became a generation that is now, at an advanced age, unwilling to grant tolerance to others. Always correcting and instructing people from other musical and social cultures. A strange development.
