Hallo Valerie, Thank you for reacting to another of the young singers whose career I follow through their CZcams channel. Amira was 12 in this performance. She Patrizio Buanne performed another duet in 2019 , when Amira was 15.
Amira won the 2013 series of Holland's Got Talent, at age 9, singing Nessun Dorma. In her first audition, she told the Judges that she had leaned to sing as her brother was learning to play the violin and she wanted to do something similar, and chose Opera. She had no formal voice training but taught herself by watching and listening and trying to imitate Opera singers on CZcams.
Amira and her mother moved to South Africa, the country of her mother's birth, shortly after the Contest, as the opportunities for young singers was better in that country than in Holland and her father followed a few years later.
As with Angelina Jordan, Amira has a very strongly developed social conscience and awareness of the disadvantages of children who are less fortunate than she is. She devoted most of her winnings from the Talent Show to setting up a Foundation to build playgrounds in Rural schools in South Africa, as it is not standard for them to be equipped with such facilities. She also uses most of the money she earns from performances for the same purpose. As at 2019 13 playgrounds have been provided.

Amira was born with a GIFT. She should be singing in the stages according to her voice and other opera areas. Blessingd from Mexico City to Amira and her opera career.
High Valerie, I am a rusted on fan of Amira, & have been since she won Holland’s Got Talent at the tender age of 9.
Prior to this, Opera was certainly not the genre that interested me. However, Amira’s voice had that something special & ever since I have followed her short career step by step. The latest performance on uTube is a medley from Sound of Music where she displays a maturity well beyond her 15 years. Her voice control & diction are superb & she can certainly use her powerful voice to advantage. The vibrato is well controlled & should you watch her early performances, before any singing lessons, she has that natural vibrato back then.
What astounds me with Amira is way she sings “effortlessly “, and is never out of breath, even holding a top C note ( or very close) for 8 seconds when singing the last note of Nella Fantasia.

Valerie. Thank you very much for this reaction given as an unbiased vocal coach. You clearly have only now discovered Amira who IMO is becoming at her very early age the best classical lyrical soprano perhaps of all time. You must look at Hollands got Talent O Mio Babbino Caro which was performed at 9 years of age and without any coaching this you will find simply astonishing. I will not make any further suggestions as you will likely get hundreds from others. But I really would like your opinion by listening to clips as she grew older up to her present age (16) in date order. It is worth looking at various medleys posted, but a must is the documentary "Ave Amira" , or other various documentaries such as posted by Ray Vandenburg. IMO your reaction is the best posted by a vocal coach and you need to get onto the bandwagon as Amira is likely to become (some say already has) as famous as a classical singer can get.

Apparently Amira learnt to sing without lessons from a voice coach BUT she learnt from watching CZcams videos. She obviously has a natural sense of musicality a wonderful talent.
Great reaction, she also sang Flower Duet with Corlea Botha. Beautiful too. And Your Love from Ennio Morricone gives me chills everytime she reaches the high notes.

A good reaction for being somewhat unfamiliar with Amira. Young Beverly Sills, wow, now there's a compliment. I too refuse to watch child performers for the very same reasons $$$ maker. No so with her. Top of her class in school and is a "franchise" athlete in Track and Field, running the 2000 meter steeplechase. It does not get anymore difficult than that! Here is where I come in. She is in the finals of competition for the Nation of South Africa. Let me repeat she's in the NATIONAL finals. Not only does it take winning to get there , it takes domination. As a former woman's track coach I see her as a15/16 year old super athlete who's singing has brought many a man to tears. I find her performances stunning! ( see above video) Her singing engagements are few enough as not to interfere with school and track. At this time she is interested in law or medicine as a post secondary educational goal. And when she does manage to fit in time for a paying concert, she gives half of it away. And it ain't chump change. I'll let you find out about her registered charity, and the same remark about chump change applies to that charity. She's a great kid, smart as heck, an outstanding athlete, and a wonderful singer. Oh, and keep her off an airplane as she seems to contract a URI every doggone time she goes home to Holland.
i've seen her doing her trampoline stuff, absolutely fearless. Amira is one of these young women that you tell her she can't do something, she'll go do it anyway. by the way Amira has just released a new video of Ennio Morricone"s "Se from Cinema Paradiso" on her official facebook page as a salute to the great composer ❤️
Very pleasantly surprised by this lady's expertise, wisdom, and performing philosophy. Few people impress me in any walk of life, but Ms. Williams is very much an exception. I suspect that many listeners will be surprised by the hints which she gave on what it takes to be a genuine opera singer - performing in full most any given opera. It is a mammoth ask, taking at the very least ten years of serious training/ practice/ practise and development. Far too many listeners hear a new young singer and foolishly cry 'Gadzooks! The best singer on the planet!'
You do realize that how people feel about voices and music in general is subjective.... what you think is great someone else may not like it, much like some people think rod Stewart's voice us to their liking whole others can't stand it..... your comments are noted but incorrect.

Hello Valerie, I advised about 4 weeks ago in reply to your incredible critique on Amira & the various young singers that you have witnessed singing perhaps above their ability. I absolutely agree with your summation, and in particular to the natural voice of Amira.
I have followed this delightfully modest young lady since she won Holland’s Got Talent at the age of nine, (without a single lesson) . Since then, with tutorage, she has performed in various countries & usually to a packed auditorium supported by a full orchestra and backup singers. To appreciate her development, I would recommend her duet performance singing Flower Duet with Amira singing the main theme & her partner singing harmony. Again you can see how natural her voice is delivered, with beautiful vibrato & to keep the whole arrangement together at the tender age of 13 is simply outstanding
Then again, to admire her increased maturity in body, voice & presentation, her medley from Sound of Music ( now 15 yrs old )
Is something that binds myself & her millions of worldwide fans to this superb performer.
In finishing, please note that whatever register she is in, or however she uses per powerful voice, she does so EFFORTLESSLY, & never appears out of breath.
You appeared so keen to react to more of Amir’s performances, but as to date, they have not been forthcoming.....Sincerely hope you can make time in the very near future. Looking forward to it.
She is self taught from Utube! You need to read up on her home start. She is 19 now.
I'm not sure how old Amira was in this performance, but she taught herself to sing by watching arias on CZcams. She started having some minor vocal coaching around age 11 or 12, with emphasis on better breath control.

As much as you say you are not sure you want to do O Mio Babbino Caro you might want to reconsider. Amira performed that opera aria just 3 months after her 10th birthday. It was a surprise "unannounced" performance with Andre Rieu at his concert in the square Amira gave what many people thought was the most incredible performance by a 10 year old ever heard. She performed in front of between 10 and 15,000 people who gave her a raucous, standing ovation and there was barely a dry eye in the house.

Is it perfect? No, she makes some errors of pronunciation but actually brings so much passion, emotion and vocal control in her performance that she is just mesmerizing.and the resonance in her voice will leave you stunned. Amira took the opera world by storm when she auditioned on Holland's Got Talent. Here these two perform wonderful together and their emotion does make one tear up. I have heard Patrizio before just a couple of times, his voice is so good, Amira so young is simply fantastic
One thing that helps Amira with her breathing is that she is a long distance runner. She is very competitive in that she puts everything into what she does. She won many distance running competitions as she was learning to sing!
yes...and no, ...the running has helped with her, stamina... but not really with her breathing...! not for classical singing anyway...

This is a brilliant review, thank you. I am especially appreciative of your warnings about weightier material -- morally and technically, especially morally. Without getting too esoteric, Amira is gifted with the physical geometry that produces a sparkling, bell-like resonance that may, or may not hold as she physically matures. Will she remain a soprano or will she settle into a mezzo, for example. There is also that, how do you say it -- the "soul" of her voice. That intangible personality of her voice that animates from who she is at her core, as a person. She reminds me of Beverly Sills in the sense Ms. Sills was animated by the soul of a mother of two special needs children for and to whom she devoted her private life. Amira's first instinct with any financial earnings was to start a foundation to build playgrounds for underprivileged school children in South Africa -- at age 9 or so! Who teaches this? This is not just an "old soul" as the Holland's Got Talent judge asserted, this is what, in Hebrew (ancient Judaism) is called a tzaddik (tsa-dik); a genetically hyper-Godly soul. I'm not saying Amira is consciously spiritual, in any religious sense; it's simply a character quality that is baked into her singing. We recognize this in the thousands of CZcams comments along the lines "She is an angel" or "Her voice is heavenly." You can't teach this, and it is much more sublime than the throat geometry of a prepubescent girl (Amira is 12 when she sings this clip). Another hint about who Amira really is will be revealed when she turns 16 or so and matures into her late teens and early twenties. Of course her voice will reflect her maturing physiology, and we hope she keeps singing and developing her instrument. It is the other collisions of life I think she will navigate well, hopefully more admirable than Brittney Spears, Miley Cirus, or Charlotte Church, for example, who assassinated their princess who created their opportunity and childhood fame.
Anyway, your review was spot on I think. Please consider reviewing Amira's progress a couple of years later with Gabriella's Sang (czcams.com/video/m5unawKpysw/video.html&start_radio=1) or Nella Fantasia (czcams.com/video/z_WyjEj5DW8/video.html). I agree totally with your comment, I like many here have listened to music my whole 67 yr life and never heard anything like this. You can feel her singing from her heart, and then when you find out all her other attributes it just increases her personna, she is a global treasure. For me her voice and the way she uses it is the one I want to hear and the only one that brings an emotional response no matter how many times I hear it. Don't understand naysayers.

This is perhaps my favorite performance by Amira. I too had never heard (or heard of) Patrizio Buanne, but I really love him here. He’s obviously enchanted by Amira, they are enjoying themselves,, and their duet reflects that. Love from Florida. Edited to add: I’d be interested to hear your comments on Beau Dermott, who was on Britain’s Got Talent a few years ago when she was twelve (I think?). Her audition song was “Defying Gravity” and it got the Golden Buzzer from Amanda Holden. She was wonderful. Wonder what your comments would be.

I agree that too many young singers have the tendency to chose songs outside their natural ability, but Amira is most definitely the exception.
I would really appreciate you reacting to her performance in Flower Duet , where she displays superb voice control in a somewhat difficult Aria. I believe you will be mightily impressed. Amira was 13 in this performance & for someone so young to have , not only incredible voice control, but also the ability to move her audience with her powerful & angelic voice.

When she was young, she visited Alma Deutscher in England, about her age, who is an incredibly talented composer, who was composing her opera, Cinderella. There are two videos of them singing her STEPSISTERS DUET together that are fun. CINDERELLA sold out in San Jose, California for four performances, and had two added. Video is available. Also of her Carnegie Hall concert including her playing her piano and violin concertos. Now living in Vienna, composing a bespoke opera. She writes all the orchestral parts.
Hi Valerie, I commented some 5 months ago, suggesting some other Amira performances that you may want to react on.
I’m aware, by your comments, that you’re not keen on reacting to children, & I understand. However, as you said, Amira was singing within her own normal capacity & you were impressed with various other aspects of her performance.
I feel that the millions of Amira fans throughout the world would appreciate you reacting to more of her performances , as this particular Aria was when she was ( I think ) 11 yrs old, & there are many beautiful performances you could react to from the ages of 10 to 16.
The thing is that she's from a musical family. Father play organ, mother & her older brother Fincent plays violin, and she sings... She's been coached in Holland, having for example a "masterclass" with André Rieu and his signers & orchestra, and now is coached well, and also has singing coaching at school in South Africa (the father is Dutch and mother South-African, and her south african grand father and great grand father sung opera... that's where she's got that love and culture of music. And she's really got a good head on her shoulders, always seeking advices and coaching, and also having a big heart, having createt that fondation to build playgrounds in schools for poor townships in South Africa, giving half her concert earnings to this cause because, as she said, "she can't be happy with the money if other children are not having a place to play like her because they are poor". For a video to react to, I would definitely say "Gabriella's Sang" (Gabriella's song) she sung in Swedish, and that for me is her best performance to date with her "Amazing Grace".

Hi Valerie, I would very much like to hear your reaction to Amira Willighagen singing Nessun Dorma in Sth Africa in Dec 2017. Then she was at the age of a mere 13 Years 9 months although she looks somewhat older and in that golden gown truly beautiful. I wonder what you think about young girls of that age singing this type of song. Having said that she does it so well. Is it maybe too difficult a piece for her at that age and maybe cause difficulties for her voice at a later stage?

Mirusia Louwerse who won the Dame Joan Sutherland medal for youg opera singers at the age of 19. she is also Dutch but lives in Australia , I'm not sure if she is still with Andre Rieu but she should be.
Hopefully you've broadened your experience of Amira's talents by now. I'm looking forward to hearing what you've got to say after you've had more experience of Amira. Oh, btw, she taught herself how to sing by watching youtube videos. She's had professional voice trainers since she won Holland's got talent, which was opera, "Oh Mio Babbino Caro". As I said, I hope you have more experience with her before you talk about her again.

I've heard her sing this year, and her voice is changing. It's neither young or old. She's receiving training in Europe, but it will be years before we hear the final product.
When she move to South Africa she had an official teacher who worked as music teacher in her school. Recently she changed back to the last last teacher she had in Europe but they only have remote lessons since she lives in The Netherlands and Amira in South Africa. Besides her ordinary school Amira has extra subjects. New subjects are Piano, Drama and Dancing as you can see the fruits from in her latest I Feel Pretty. There also is a video of her playing the Piano, quite well, from the same music shop she bought it.
She got her lungs by being a winning distance runner.
She’s aware of the risks to developing voices and is being very careful.
In her medley from THE SOUND OF MUSIC she goes an octave higher than Julie Andrews.

very nice reaction. I have been following Amira since she won the talent show. My main follow is Angelina Jordan, but I can't compare her to Amira. Two different styles of music. I bounce back and forth with these two, depending on my mood as they both have a very calming effect. Its either jazz or Amira. Love them both. Thanks. : )

Interesting comment on vibrato "wobble". I wonder if you folks are aware of an entire very popular genre of music that features "wobble" as an integral part of the vocal. It's really quite good, if you take the time to adjust to something new. It's been out there for 60 - 70 years. It isn't commonly known in the West, but in the East it's very well known. IMHO, the most influential popular vocalist ever, anywhere had this style as part of her repertoire. Dang Dumb Me! I forgot to mention your review was great, very informative, and I love that. Amira is truly amazing.

Because she is Dutch she is protected by a Dutch law that does not allow children with talent to be exploited.
I don't know if you know this or not but Amira taught herself by watching youtube videos. No teacher unless she found one since.
Patrick Holland: No teacher only up to her first audition (August 31, 2013). She had a "master class" with Andre Rieu on December 7, 2013; and went on to win the competition in December 2013. She got a vocal coach immediately after her victory at Holland's Got Talent, who walked her through her first two albums; and has had several since. She still has lessons via Skype from her favourite teacher (Marijke Hoksbergen) in The Netherlands, at 17.

@@dafyddllewellyn6636 more is the pity this classical training is not assisting her she did better on own =- just view her first performance with no training. Classical teachers are well known for their very restrictive style of tuition and often restrict a promising career.
If this teacher was as successful as Amira i would take more notice. Never heard of her and she is now riding on the success that is Amira. A wonderful singer her taught herself from CZcams.

About that time, she left Maike, who had advised her not to sing opera, and searched for another teacher; she eventually found Marijke Hoksbergen - and she stayed with Marijke until January 1, 2018, when she moved to South Africa. From mid-2016 onward, she also attracted the attention of Coleske Artists, who took over from SONY with her recording contract early in 2017; and after the 2016 "Classics is Groot" performance, Corlea Botha decided to work with her in a performance of the flower duet from the opera "Lakme" by Delibes; they performed it at CIG 2017. So she was in effect getting both weekly lessons from Marijke plus master class work with Corlea in this period. Her current coach is Suzette Wilkens - see czcams.com/video/dEc-h1bA5YY/video.html. However, all this is just the formal side of Amira's training; of at least equal importance is what she has learned by her experiences with other performers, and what she has learned by acute observation. A teacher may teach, but they cannot learn for the student. Amira's musicality comes from within herself; she is a natural musician of enormous talent, and her interaction with - and observation of - other talented singers has benefited her greatly.

Amira is so royal sometimes in her movements on the stage. :-D I remember that when you reacted to "Valley of Queens" by Ayreon with Floor Jansen, Anneke van Giersbergen and Marcela Bovio that you wanted to hear more from Marcela Bovio as she did not get enough singing "space" in that song. Interesting review, Valerie. It is correct to say that this type of song is perfect for her. She always look at ease singing it, and her performances are excellent. Your general comments on child prodigy opera singers are also quite interesting. I know of only one of them who is becoming a true opera singer, Patricia Janeckova, from the Czech Republic. Perhaps not surprisingly, she has not made as much noise as others,, because she actually worked (studied) to become an opera singer. she graduated from the conservatoire in Ostravia 2 years ago and is now completing her second year at University level post-graduate studies. In the meantime, at 16, she won an international competition of sacred music in Rome, the only teenager in a field of young adult singers in their 20s and 30s, singing an extract from Bach's Passion selon Saint Mathieu. She gave her first concert as a true operatic singer , without microphone, at 17, a New Year holidays Vienna Style concert in Ostrava, singing Puccini, Strauss and Lehar. And what has become by far the most viewed rendition on You Tube of the famous Doll's Song from Hofmann's Tales (Les oiseaux dans la charmille) closing in on 10 million views. PJ got her first serious professional review on her role at Galatea. She was described as a pretty but small voice with a hurried career. She's still a Soubrette and hasn't progressed one inch since age 17-18. She started her training too early and is pushing her voice. She's far from the big opera stage and if she tries she might ruin her voice. Patricia perfectly fits in as an example of a pushed voice not ready for what she's doing.
