Did this help with your filmmaking?
What do you use for editing software and how do you make those slow motion clips?
@@therealjordanhedges pls respond aha
@@therealjordanhedges for slo mo, you'll want to shoot in 60 fps or higher, then in post slow down the speed to 40% or more if you shot in a higher frame rate
nope
Dope video! A different perspective of doing live video than I'm used to. I focus on capturing full sets with live audio, but this is all really good stuff to take into consideration!
I'd recommend shooting in a different picture profile to standard, nightclubs and festivals throw a huge dynamic range of light at your sensor (dark shadows, bright stage lights) and show shooting in a low contrast/flat picture profile will save a few of those shadow details and preserve the colour slightly better in your highlights. Hope this helps anyone giving this a go, it took me at least two years to get my nightlife footage looking nice out of a grade.
What do you mean different profile?
@@animalsmistakenformonsters1492 Fair warning, this is all alien to most people, including me, and we're all just doing our best to get it right. This is my best understanding of it all, but I'm sure many can correct me on anything below.
A colour space determines what possible luminance values (brightness levels) and colours are available, and how the camera will process the information from the sensor to fit within these values.
A Rec709 colour space is what you'd likely consider 'normal' looking, but it's pretty limited in terms of how much headroom you'll have in the highlights and shadows. This makes it great when you don't want to do any post-production (live streams, home videos), but you're compromising on potential image quality to have it ready to deliver straight away.
Shooting in a log (logarithmic) colour space will result in a desaturated and low contrast image, but there will be a lot more information available for you to use when you colour correct (this is an extra unavoidable step when shooting something in a log profile).
I'm not sure about other cameras, but on Sony, the Picture Profile is the group of settings that determine gamma curves, colour gamuts, and more. So this is where you're deciding how you want the camera to process your footage, and for something as harsh as a nightclub or festival, I'd always recommend leaning towards something that retains your shadows and highlights a bit better. For me that's S-Log2, but S-Log3 is best if you're shooting 10bit footage or higher.
I expect to never film a music festival but watching this gave me some great tips that I can apply to other types of filming. Cheers 🤙
Hey Jake! Thanks so much for this video! I find it quite overwhelming to start filming concerts on your own but your video helped me a lot! I'm 17 now and got to shoot already lots of concerts with bands like The Scorpions and I wish I saw this video earlier!😂 Now in quarantine I thought I should work on my skills & this is probably the best video, especially for getting an overview! Thank you so much!
I'm from China and I'm a nightclub worker. I want to meet you. And exchange and learn about the nightclub shooting skills and ways
Nice to see a different kind of vid, great content ✌️
Great on tips, great shots, great in entertainment value. Well done.
wait what?!
I was searching for live performance tips and I found you again Jake!!!
I had given opportunity to shoot from DJ Booth and live performances later today
I'm so hype!
You're like my teacher dude!
I get a lot of good tips from your videos!
Enjoy the shoot brother!!

Amazing video Jake!! Really good tips
Cheers Timo bro! it's been waaaay to long, i've gotta get over to Belgium and come say G'day
thanks Jake, that's a nice shot at 7:20 where you slow-mo where the water poured, and went back to og speed again. I didn't realize in the end video that the footage of the short compilation is actually consist of many angle and variations... it makes the footage lively, entertaining, and engaging. I would sample some of your shared knowledge and implement it to how I record music performance. but I use camcorder though so things might be different.
I shoot a lot of concerts and festivals; however I shoot them differently. I shoot with multiple cameras at the same time. I record the audio from a variety of sources as well. I get paid to cover complete performances so my equipment and techniques are different.
beautifully explaned tysm
Great video. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the redbull sound link. Going to check it.
plenty of fire tracks!
Great stuff man! Huge fan of blockers as well
Just a little spice to add to the frame 🖼 hope you’ve been well brother
hype intro!!! great editing
Intro was like an enthusiastic teacher starting a really boring maths class 😂 jks
Tip number 1: Accreditation...GOLD
thank you!!
sir what picture profile your using lowlight concert ?
thank you!
Did you get a release from all artists to post to CZcams? Working on making content like this but our team is not sure how to approach our series coming up.
This dude is making me Rich lul :D ty for the video :)
Very good picture
Thank you for the video, just starting my channel. Going to adopt a few of your tips. 🤘 #FestivalJunkie

Solid advice thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I’m a concert goer and I’m thinking of buying the dji mobile gimbal for stability during mosh pits. Are the rode mics a good upgrade so speakers don’t distort the sound?
Been using the same rode shotgun mic for about 5 years now, its great. Also, look into monitoring the audio within the camera settings, you can adjust the mic sensitivity so it doesn't peak. I get great audio in venues thanks to the combo of those two things.
When filming a music festival, what can you do with the video itself? Can you post to CZcams and not get a copyright strike? I ask because I film at a heavy metal festival and I never know what to do with the footage? I'd love to share it.
100fps allows 1/200, gpod for slow mo but is it a solution to reduce light kicking issue? I mean at 1/50 it looks like stromboscopic lights capture is bug full on my r7, instead of flashing there are full white lines randomly, I guess it's about rolling shutter ... it's why I ask
For low light shoot in 24fps
Nice Yeah 🔥
🔥🔥🔥
Nice tips! Do you shoot with any Picture Profile or use PP OFF ?
I was using PP7 for a little while but I have it off now because I’m not great at colour grading (especially for these kind of explainer videos, maybe for a cinematic travel film I’d use it but pick ya battles)
hey jake, whats the best or in your opinion go-to music site for youtube creators?
thank you
Hey bro I made this video earlier in the year that should give you some great insight into where I'm finding beats if not from Red Bull Sound Supply: czcams.com/video/riE32qGsd70/video.html
Sound wise - what would you recommend to do if the sound is "breaking" ?
external mic etc ?
Drop your mic sensitivity by -10 to -18 decibels and bring it back up in post if needed. That “breaking” sound is referred to as “clipping” in audiospeak. It’s like overexposing an image. I definitely recommend picking up a nice used rode mic or even better, making friends with the audio FoH people and leaving a tascam type recorder in front of their desk. Bring em a beer or a snack and they might even let you leave your bag there.
Keen to get into music photography or videography?
Damn this video is helpful. Thank you for making such awesome content. ❤😉
Aashish Arora you should go back and check out his older videos. He has a lot of really good stuff with only like 1000 views. Some pretty fun stuff to watch
@@tuggerthegriz5484 I will do just that 😄
Yes I want to get into it
How about your audio do you record the audi thru your cam or you have a rig attached on the media team?
For audio i'm recording my points to camera with the rode wireless go: geni.us/E35MX6 - in regards to recording the artists it's a little tricky as more often then not you need the rights to use their music in your videos - for this video i have used only licensed music through Red Bull Sound Supply
Hello jake, how to set whiteblance in stage light.
Thank you.
This threw me for loop for a while. Hopefully my 2 cents will help. No one has a straight answer because there are so many different colors coming off of stage lighting. I've found for normal LED atage lighting that they have a white that is basically set around daylight at 5600K on their white setting and some older par cans that are tungsten halogen lamps are in the 3200-degree K range. If you have time and access to the LD (lighting director) you can ask him to pull up his white he uses on the front wash to light the talent and then manually balance it yourself. Of course it's rare you get this kind of luxury so I would start with 5600 and see how that looks.
What if your walking down the street and some car or bar. Is playing loud music in public. Can you not film as your walking by. Seems more like that music is invading your space. Since you are in public. Or you get a youtube strike?
Make more videos like How to Film Music Festivals and Nightclubs manh
I don't really go to nightclubs but the camera gear would be the same as what i've shared in this ;)
Everything was good apart from when you said 100fps was double your frame rate, the 50p look is so unnatural no? Compared to 25
shoot in 24 if you really want things to look natural - i choose 100 as most of my clips are played back at 50% on a 24 timeline
👌🏻👌🏻🔥😍
the a6500 can shoot at 100 fps?? I thought it only could shoot at 120fps
Switch the NTSC / PAL settings and you can shoot in 25 / 50 / 100 fps
as long as the camera is security approved no problem.
Do you use a gimbal or stablizer at all?
No, but I would recommend if shooting with heavier mirrorless camera or DSLR
👍🤟🚀
Wow. I was looking for tips on how to not have the colors of the stage lights clip the saturation and every clip you have is clipped and looks like shit.
Perfect, you've come to the right channel :) ahaha
Wait, you shot the whole thing in 100fps?
24 also as it's a night show, the daytime stuff i mostly shot 50 or 100
hey can I use a canon eos rp for this?
He’ll yess
Thank you
So guessin that cam dont rec audio?
which cam? the sony a6400, sure does but in terms of recording artist's music live - there's copyright laws that act against it (especially for publishers)
@@JakeRichandAnnaChah Just recording for a local arist. A external mic will be the best way to go?
@@dustinhardin5113 Sure, either try and get the direct mix from the audio engineer who is mixing the live sound as an output and sync in post or record live sound with a Rode VideoMic (or similar) on top of your camera
What about audio?
Most music edits will use audio from the artist or licensed music
Getting risky with the title and finger guns
Pew pew pew
I bet that money is sleeping real hard in Melbourne these days.
something different from you.
not into it? what vids do you like most that i post?
I actually watch travel videos and GoPro stuff
Dilshan Hewawitharana Hi, check out my Go Pro video please.
