Bosch Nyon Electric Bike Display Overview

  • While visiting Motostrano in Redwood City California recently, I met with the owner, Joe Witherspoon, and one of the shop employees who is originally from Germany, Frank Schulz, to get some information on the premium Bosch Nyon display panel. First, I looked at the Intuvia (which is fairly large, removable, and has a Micro USB port) and then the Purion (which is compact and not removable) and then we dove in.
    Just like the Intuvia, the Purion comes with a remote button pad that has a home icon and joystick to allow you to navigate through all of the options. The main portion of the display is larger than Intuvia, backlit with color vs. monochrome, and it does have a functional Micro USB port. It appeared to also get brighter or dimmer automatically depending on the lighting conditions. It appears that the mounting interface for Purion is the same slide-click as Intuvia.
    One of my favorite improvements to this display, is that it shows your battery percentage instead of a 5-bar infographic with 20% steps. Some of the main screens include ride distance and performance over time, elevation, and a GPS enabled map. Unlike COBI (which Bosch recently purchased), the Nyon has its own built-in GPS so you don’t need to tether to your phone, it behaves more like a Garmin. It is also WiFi enabled so you can connect to a local network and download updates. Another cool feature is this online profile system that tracks your data and allows you to import and export rides. In the app, you can see how much power you contribute as a rider vs. the motor system which was very neat. Frankie was putting in 150 watts of power over his rides which really illustrates how powerful the motor is (offering 250+ nominal). You can also configure custom riding modes using the app, so the Bosch motor will offer more or less power at different steps.
    The display looked like it was in great shape, and Frankie said he had been using it for nearly three years! I am not sure if it will come to the US, it is positioned as an upgrade in Europe that you can add for your Bosch powered electric bike. I have had mine for over two years, this system is so cool I use the navigation allot, but the thing I love that was not covered is You can actually produce a map of how far you can go depending on your Bosch battery capacity and current usage and it takes in to consideration the lay of the land so hills etc. This will re-adjust every 15 seconds and is based roughly on the last mile & riding conditions.

    Patience is a virtue glad I'm waiting until I can get an e bike that comes standard with the Bosch Nyon Display. Hopefully you can update the firmware on the device as Bluetooth and Mobile Wireless Carriers signals will change throughout the near future. Bluetooth Signal 5.0 to 6.0 and Wireless Mobile Signals from 4g to 5g. Court you stated that you can update the firmware on the bike motor itself to correct? That's going to be super cool not having to rely on LBS to update the firmware on the motor, would be nice to have this display to come with a self diagnostic tool kit as well, so techies can troubleshoot their own e bikes.

    Omg. Apart from motors and range on bicycles, this is a big feature. This LCD would be an amazing thing to have in a city where commuting gets tight sometimes.

      I agree, and it sounds like you can buy a retrofit kit from some online dealers and it will work alright, that's what Frankie was saying anyway

    I hate it that Bosch pushed an update to the Nyon that bricked the wifi. Guess where you get new software updates from? Yes: wifi. I'm stuck with that version since then! Which means I can't use navigation since I can't download maps! They should offer to take them back and fix this error of theirs but no.

    Std display is hard to work out if the battery is 60% or 80% on 4 bars because it can suddenly drop 20%. Great to see percentage.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  Před 6 lety +1

      Exactly, this is a huge deal to me, but at least all of the Bosch displays have range estimation so you can at least get a closer idea once the pack drops to one bar 20% increment

      can't we just check the miles or km range and calculate our tours that way ? personally i don't see it as that big of a deal. i just take 20 km's extra in account, never let me down
      . nice gps though

  • @philodygmn
    @philodygmn Před 6 lety +4

    I'm glad it's not Bluetooth, which sickens me acutely, and while I appreciate % battery, large bright color, fitness tracking, etc., as someone in the market for utility, I have a hard time finding interest and cost justification over simpler versions. Serving enthusiast markets is fine, I just want to vouch for the viability of more focused functionality over that for the rest of us. I hope WiFi never, ever becomes required for operation, no matter what boon to security or enhanced engagement with apps it could offer!

      @Andrew-qb3oq Před 6 lety

      agree... cool, but I'd have a hard time justifying it as well.. .I'd prefer better battery life and more powerful motors, but I rarely look down at my display for more than just battery life and adjusting pedal assist. Most of the other things i feel like a smart phone could do.

  • @1650million
    @1650million Před 6 lety +4

    The custom ride modes are wonderful, and the very best feature about this display, IMO, but you shouldn´t need such a big, expensive display to do so. Other manufacturers allow you to do so without even using a display (such as Specialized). Moreover, I rather trust my Garmin GPS loaded with my own maps than that, which takes a lot of space on the handlebar. Personally, I think it´s a mistake to force people to buy Nyon if we want custom ride modes, which are wonderful, and the only way to get your desired power assist at all times.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  Před 6 lety +2

      Right, it seems like many of the manufacturers are now offering mobile apps to customize power levels so the display can stay simple (Shimano does this with their E-TUBE app)

    • @1650million
      @1650million Před 6 lety +1

      And Specialized has allowed the custom power assist for quite some time already, via app.
      The problem with Shimano Steps is you can only customize the top two modes, they give you no control over the ECO mode, which is even more powerful than Bosch at default settings.
      For Bosch, it would be great if we could just loan the Nyon, configure the custom ride modes to our liking, and then keep using Intuvia/Purion, but I have no idea if the bike stores those custom settings without using the Nyon. Do you happen to know, Court?
      Cheers

    why not have some magnets on the bars to mount your phone, which already does more, an app, and make it beep when you get off the bike to remind you your phone is there

      Yes, you can. It´s the same mount. You can buy as an "upgrade" at your dealer even if it comes with Intuvia as standard.

      Dunno if it can be bought in the U.S. at a dealer, but Nyon is on ebay:

      The Nyon won't be coming to the US, but as mentioned above you can add it aftermarket although it won't be supported by Bosch USA so if you have warranty issues you'll have to deal with the European seller. That can make things a little challenging. I would just stick with the Intuvia or add COBI.

    • @1650million
      @1650million Před 6 lety +1

      I don´t understand that. The Nyon is not even new, it has been available as an option here in Europe for more than two years, at least. Why would you have the bike availabe in the US but not a simple display?? What´s the logic behind that?

    • @ForbinColossus
      @ForbinColossus Před 6 lety +1

      Thx for replying, Chris. As a shopper/soon-to-be-buyer, my goal was an FST Haibike w/ Bosch. Now I'm seeing serious competitive options, so coming from my consumer persepective, I suggest Bosch/Haibike get that Nyon here to attract my business. Otherwise, other systems are moving ahead of them.
      Also, as an NYC shop owner, you must have opinions on anti-theft for urban environments. Displays should be removable, hence my preference for Intuvia over Purion or competing brands like Shimano.

      Hmm, I was told that they sell it as an optional upgrade, maybe it depends on which trim level you get, like more expensive bikes have this but some others have Intuvia or Purion?

      At least in sweden, intuvia is the most common. I recently bought a Super commuter +9. An expensive ebike. And it had Purion.
