The very evening I watched this photo, I took pictures of the moon using your instructions. My wife and I were simply amazed! Absolutely brilliant! Perfect exposures. I am 72 years old and was so happy with what I had learned! Thank you, thank you!!
You are very welcome William, glad you got a great result. Best wishes.
Paul @ Photo Genius
That smile that I had on my face after shooting the moon clear for the first time in my life after wanting it to do since childhood! Priceless. Thank you man! Loved your tutorial. It worked perfect.
Perfect tutorial. Thanks ✔️
I first managed to get the exposure right on an entirely manual, inexpensive 35mm camera with no autofocus, no rangefinder and no exposure meter when I was about 15. I stared at that print for ages through a magnifying glass and was amazed. There was detail. Blurred but not a white blob and I could make out the seas. Magic!
what should image quality be set as? L, M RAW....
I would do L JPEG and RAW, that way you can have the best of both worlds. A JPEG, ready to download and share, and the RAW footage to edit in Lightroom or some other program. It takes up more room, but memory is pretty cheap these days. @@ramelfrost134
WHY would any one give the thumb down to this video??? this video is so comprehensive easy to understand by a very likeable person
Thank you kindly Herman ($20 in the post) 😀
Appreciate the feedback and support for my channel.
Paul @ Photo Genius.
Because people are just nasty
They are called Trolls. Unhappy basement dwellers.
The people that disliked this couldn’t figure out Manual mode
Those dislikes are Australians tryna like.
Taking a photo of the moon is what inspired me to get a camera. I can't wait to get it and start my journey in photography.
this is my first time going completely manual thanks to this video.. i might actually sign up for a class now
SAME !! I ORDERED MY CAMREA TODAY !!
It will be fun, and challenging at times, but that's part of the fun of learning photography. And even many pro photographers will tell you you will always be learning something new (as Rick Sammon says, "You're a student for life.")
Me too!
Me too! All though I think I need a bigger lens, I’m still getting the white blob😂
This is undoubtedly one of the best tutorials I've ever watch on Moon Photography.
I agree. I am an astrophotographer and I like the way he teaches people. Simple and to the point. Easy to follow and clearly explained. I totally agree with his methods.
Thanks Rob, glad you enjoyed the video.
Thanks @ BallaratDragon - very much appreciated.
I agree!
You are SUPER GOOD at explaining things, especially for beginners like me. Thank you so much!
Mine came out best using 1/160 shutter speed on my Canon t5i. I have the 55-250 lens. Thanks!
The amount of tips I've learned from you over the past 2yrs is RIDICULOUS! Thank you!
I just watched this and went at my balcony and took a picture. My photograph is decent af!🔥
Great news! I'm so glad you got a some good photos - thanks for watching the video and supporting my channel.
I’m glad your auto focus worked well
Will try it tonight thanks
Same here. Feels like I know what I'm doing.
@@joaobastos1634 I felt like that once. Not any more, still learning. ;)
You really do make photography easier, so well explained, no gimmicks no bells and whistles, just straight forward teaching, cheers mate!
I have a learning disability that makes it harder to understand. So i just wanted to say thank you sir. You explain it very simple and take your time explaining and showing what to push. This video helped me so much since this is going to be my future career. I look forward to watching other videos you got for photography.
You are explaining everything in very detail without missing any settings. This is one of the best tutorial I’ve ever found in CZcams.
Hi Paul, just wanted to say a huge thank you. Some time ago I started watching your videos, I was in auto mode with the entry level D5600. After watching your tutorials (which perfectly explain how to move to manual mode) I moved to full manual and have never gone back to auto. I've even upgraded to the D500 and have achieved many stunning pictures. I don't think I would have been brave enough to move over without your beautifully and clearly explained videos. It's been over a year now and my love of photography has turned into a bit of an obsession :-)
One of the best channels on CZcams for learners like me.. you make everything so simple and easy to understand. No product placement or unwanted nonsense. Thank you so much..
Very well done. Ive been needing to train in DSLR photography for about 8 years. This has just the right amount of talk and instruction. Very pleased and looking forward to shoot tonight’s moon. Thanks.
I've been a photographer since I was a kid, I'm now 62 and the digital world has left me behind, but your video was very enlightning! Thanks for the simple way of explaining the cameras.
I was out at 3.10am the other morning taking photos of the moon, hopefully will see a great improvement now after seeing this video. Thanks
👍
Show the improvement please!
I'm a proficient photographer and this is the best video on moon photography i've seen. Paul covers all the bases with useful information, that's easy to understand. If you don't get good moon shots, then you are not doing what this tutorial is teaching. You need to cover all the points to get a great shot, and you will. Thanks for the info!!!!
Wow - thank you for the very kind words and great feedback. I really do appreciate the support 😀
Paul, I'm a DSLR neophyte. I found your instruction to be extremely easy to follow & took the sensory overload away for me. I'm heading to Yellowstone & Grand Teton this weekend. I'm now excited about getting great moon photos! Thanks!!
Hands down the best photography tutorial I've seen on CZcams! Going to use all I've learnt to shoot today's Supermoon
same here lmao
How’d it go?
You are amazing man! Finally impressed my dad
Sir, I thoroughly enjoyed Your instruction. Keep rocking. God bless you.
I have been taking moon photos with a small Canon point and shoot that has a manual setting. They turn out great, but I have a Canon DSLR that I would prefer to use. Knowing about digital zoom has opened up a great big night sky for me, so thank you!
Thank you, Paul! I have wanted to have a camera like this for 40 years and now I'm taking the time to learn. After coming across your videos they are my go-to. I love how you explain, show each step with the camera, and that you use the Canon T7 . It is so helpful! 😊
Thank you for this tutorial. I recently bought my first dslr and already learned a lot from you :-) You are an excellent teacher.
Thank you Frank, I really appreciate the feedback 👍
These involves us daily in doing something 🤩❣️💯
👍
You have just given me the inspiration to take up photography again. For too long the camera has been in the case. I was reasonably adept at general photos, and I did try moon shots, but they were woeful to say the least. Even though my Canon 450D is ancient by todays standards, it is still capable of doing the job, and with the help of someone like yourself, you have reinvigorated me to once again go out and take photos. Thank you for your clear, precise information, it was good to get back in the classroom again, and I cannot thank you enough.
I just learned more from this one video than I have in the past two years trying to figure these settings out and what they mean. Thank you
Hey Paul! I'm glad I found your videos. I actually bought my very first DSLR camera, which is a Canon T7/1500D starter bundle kit. It came with 18mm-55mm lens and 75-300mm lens. A few weeks after I purchased the camera bundle, I purchased my very first prime lens(Canon 50mm STM lens). Through watching various of your videos(especially the ones that features the Canon T7), I've learned a lot. I'm dying to take a moon photo after watching this video, because I actually have the camera and lens you used to take your moon photo. Your photo came out so crisp and clean. I would greatly appreciate it if you could continue to do more videos on tips, tricks, photography, lenses, etc on the Canon T7/1500D🙏💯
I would love to grow my photography skills with the Canon T7 and the 3 lens i have right now.
And so far you've helped me along the way, including a lot of photographer friends i know as well.
this is the best video I've seen on this subject. Thank you!
Hi Paul
My name is Jose Marin I am from Costa Rica 🇨🇷 but I actually living in North Carolina, USA.
I bought a Canon Rebel T7 few months ago in order to fill my dream of one day mastering the camera and taking professional photos for my own satisfaction.
Knowing this I want to thank you for the effort and work that you are putting in this channel to help people like me.
I found your videos absolutely amazing and the way you explain the content it’s absolutely great.
Thank you so much and keep up the good things and the good work.
I hope you are safe and sound where ever you are at the moment you read this comment.
My sincerest and deepest greetings from the USA
📸
Thank you so much Jose, I really do appreciate the kind words and feedback and I'm happy you find the videos informative. The T7 is a great camera so I hope you are getting some great photos.
Stay safe and best wishes to you from Brisbane.
Paul @ Photo Genius.
Having used SLR (yes back in the FILM days), DSLR, and now mirrorless I don't consider myself a PRO but more like an experienced enthusiast.
Now although having that experience I didn't learn anything from this video, BUT....
... this is perhaps the BEST video I've seen explaining how to get a great photo of the moon, for a beginner or beginner who thinks they are not a beginner.
Great job with this video, Paul.
I have been struggling with these issues, and getting the balance right for ages, and in just a few minutes of watching your video everything has suddenly clicked into place (if you'll pardon the pun) I didn't realise just how little I knew about my camera till now. Thanks so much for taking the time to explain this. For the first time I actually feel in control, instead of the camera controlling me....and it's a good feeling!!
Finally, check list. Awesome tips. Wonderful video.
Thanks Ravi 🙂
You make things so very easy to understand. Thank you so much! For the first time since I've had my camera, I have been able to get a clear shot of our lunar eclipse. Always a thumbs up!
Wow! Gonna watch this one several times, just got my first Canon T7 for some pre-beginner Astrophotography and and you sir have just simplified it for me! Thank you very much!
Really good content, and the explanation for everything you went through was top class, thank you.
You are welcome Paul, appreciate the feedback.
Other tips: Use a polarizing or moon filter to cut glare. If your camera has a mirror, lock the mirror up to minimize camera shake. Quarter moon or crescent moon pictures can be better than full moon pictures since the sun is shining at it from the side causing shadows from the crater ridges giving more detail to your photos.
Thank you so much - not just for this video, but for all your videos. I am new to photography and you make everything so easy to understand. I followed this tutotial and took my very first night photos of the moon (also first time shooting in full manual mode with my Canon EOS/ 77D 70-300mm). My pictures turned out incredibly well! Thanks again!!
I’m so thankful that you made this video. It perfectly worked and I couldn’t be happier. Thank you for your hardwork. Will always support you.
This realy helped i can now take amazing photos like a pro! Thank you!
Excellent detailed explanations. Thank you. I’ll try tonight.
Thank you - hope you get some good results.
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain especially for beginner like me who has no photography terminology . I had the camera for 2 years and finally one watch of your video I was able to really take a real picture of the moon instead of the bright white circle.
By far, the best tutorial on the moon I have seen. So concise and accurate. Thank you so much for the information!
i was trying that yesterday and here you are today, teaching the same. Thank you sir.
Thanks for watching the video and supporting my channel.
I always enjoy watching your videos, thanks for making them.
You are very welcome, really appreciate the kind feedback.
Paul.
My first camera was a Minolta Hi-Matic semi automatic SLR camera, which I bought in Hong Kong in 1970. I had so much fun with it starting onAutomatic setting , then graduating to taking manual photos and slides. I still have it but don’t even know if I can get film for it now. I have a couple of compact cameras and a Fugi Finepix bridge camera. Your explanations brought so many memories back. My best ever photo was of the Houses of Parliament at night, I didn’t have a tripod, I just rested it on the embankment wall and held my breath while counting to ten holding down the shutter. It was a lucky shot!
Thanks Paul, that’s the clearest tutorial yet I’ve seen on moon shots and I’ll be trying it out very soon here in the UK, where we have some cold nights at present!
You have covered the topic very well. One note I would add is, observe the moon through the camera and lens for a short while - minutes - and you will notice a shimmer over the surface of the moon from time to time. It is actually our atmosphere which becomes unstable for a short time. After a while, you can pick the quiet times (no shimmer), so target the photo in that time. This will give the shooter the best results, especially at higher magnifications. Another aside, shoot the moon higher in the sky - less atmosphere to shoot through. Clear skies.
Thanks for the tip Peter 👍
Hey Paul wanted to thank you. This VDO really helped. I used a 55-250mm lens and was able to take a shot which came out good. Need to take more and practice but can't thank you enough for the simple explanations that you do that makes it so easy to understand. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your videos every time.
Thank you so much for your kind words LJ, I'm glad you got a great photo.
Paul 😀
Got my first clear shot of the full moon tonight, amazing. Thanks for the tutorial.
I bought a canon some time ago just because I love taking pictures and wanted a good camera but I could only get a good picture (and not a white circle) of the moon late into the night early morning when it was a distance away. After following your instructions, last night I was finally able to get rid of that white ball.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. It has helped like no other.
Thanks you so much. Perfect timing.
You are welcome Giselle, thank you so much for watching and supporting my channel.
Just came across this video two days late. I can't wait to try on the next clear night. Great tutorial.
It's still looking good tonight in Aus :)
Thanks for watching, please consider subscribing - new photography tutorials every week.
What i really like on your videos is the way how you explain and show it on Canon and Nikon cameras without making a difference between those two brands.I saw this on many of your videos.
I watched this for the first time 6 months ago, problem was that I was such a newbie, I still didn’t get it. But I re-watched, and now I GET IT!!!! And took a beautiful half moon shot while in Pennsylvania. THANK YOU PAUL.... I’m hanging in there and love your videos !!!!!
Thank you very much I had a fantastic shot tonight, great tips 🙏📸😁
You are very welcome Anna, thanks for watching and supporting my channel.
This suddenly got recommended by youtube today when I'm waiting for the Strawberry Moon to happen so I can take a picture of it, and I needed this guide, so thank you!
I’m here just before the pink super moon :)
Hi Paul! I just bought a Canon 850D about 2 weeks ago. I have been watching your tutorial videos and they are the best of what I have watch on CZcams. I have learned so much and for been new to photography I can say that I have not used the Auto mode at all thanks to you. I love your channel so much that I have shared it with a friend.
Thanks PhotoGenius..! Really simple and clear instructions. This video helps not only to shoot the moon but also to learn the basic techniques of DSLR.
You had some nice points I had not heard before, such as turning vibration stabilization off. Good pointers!
Thanks for watching Everett.
THANK YOU for a relatable, straightforward but comprehensive tutorial. I appreciate that you actually showed the camera and explained each step in detail. You seem patient and friendly - essential teacher qualities, haha! I look forward to trying this tonight for the now waning full moon. I have subscribed and will be watching more of your videos.
Thank you so much Susan, appreciate the feedback and kind words.
Paul @ Photo Genius.
I am in AWE of how detailed my photos of the moon came out after watching this video!! Thank you so much for the tutorial!
You are so welcome, glad you got some good shots. I've made another video about shooting the stars in the nigh sky, you may want to check that out next : czcams.com/video/f73onFoDvVU/video.html
😀
This is a fantastic tutorial. Just what I needed. I tried some prime focus imaging with my old Canon T2i in auto-mode, and the images are okay, but I am 100% more confident now with this information to go out and start using manual mode. Thank you very much!
Give that a try tonight, thanks Paul.
Thanks Mike - hope you get some great images.
Whos here training for the eclipse
Lmfaoooo Fr 😭😭
Haven't been here in a while, but happily returned for this. Thanks for keeping this simple and easy to understand for us novices. Never disappointed.
Great tutorial - my moon was a bight blob but I have finally taken a moon with detail on my Nikon 5600 using 300mm zoom - I am just a beginner but am really impressed with your help Paul.🌜
Lovely video, can't wait to try it out, please make one for taking the stars. Would like to know more about night photography as well, thanks a lot for this.
Great suggestion! I will consider this for a future video - thanks.
This is good content. I have so many pictures of the moon. Great teaching
Thank you 👍 🙂
Love the thorough and easy to understand tutorial! Thank you!
Great video thanks. Looking forward to clear skies to try this out.

I just bought the Canon rebel t7i a few months ago.
Your tutorial is so helpful.
Thank you.
This tutorial was excellent. It worked very well for me. No fuzzy ball of light after watching this tutorial. I was very happy with the result after Paul’s clear direction.
Loving your videos. I got a Nikon for Christmas and it overwhelmed me a bit. Your short videos is helping so much. Thank you
I’ve been taking moon shots for years. I wish I had seen this years ago. It would have saved me a lot of bad shots. I’ve had some success with with my Canon SX420 point and shoot with digital zoom but my best shots were taken with my T7 this February.
Thanks for watching the video and supporting my channel. The T7 is a great camera so I hope you also get some good shots of tonights supermoon.
@@photogenius too cloudy. Can't get a decent shot.
I was able to shoot part of a lunar eclipse with a Kodak Z710 once I figured out how to play with the manual settings.
Thank you for the tip's Paul, will try them later on here in UK after midnight :)
I hope you get some good results, thanks for watching 👍
@@photogenius i did ok thanks, but as usual i need a bigger lens ha ha ha only got a canon 18-135 but am happy with the result
Paul, You are THE BEST instructor for photography on the internet. Especially for beginners like me. Very clear presentation and you make it so simple Thank you!!
Thank you so much for taking the time and patience to explain everything here, it was greatly appreciated.
Very well done. Would recommend you include a few images if the Moon to show what can be done just to whet people’s appetite to go out and shoot the Moon.
Thanks Paul,
Wish I had seen this two years ago. Lol.
Really nice to see and hear someone saying "ISO KEEP IT LOW" I was bought up on that mantra in the '70s with film.
On my now dead bridge ( Sony DSC H400.) my go to start position was 1/250s f8 @ 100 ISO.
For a full moon. That camera would drop to 80 ISO
Someone told me that was a good starting point for the moon.
Great Content again. !
Thanks David - I'm thinking of making some "ISO keep it low" T-shirts 😀
Best wishes, keep safe.
Paul.
@@photogenius
I might just want a T-Shirt like that :)
Cheers Paul. :)
Every info that everyone would need is encapsulated in one short video! Great work and advices, thanks!
Thanks so much…I tried it and it works. Still learning to operate my Canon Im new to photography but by just watching this video a few times I finally understand the functionality of my camera.
Funny you should post this now mate. I was about to give this another go. Thanks and stuff!.
Same here
You are welcome, thanks for watching.
thank you for the thorough explanation - now if I could afford the right lens for night sky :)
Very welcome! Happy New Year to you.
FINALLY!!
Straight to the point for us beginners. What an absolute legend !!!
Loved it!
Perfectly timed for the super moon but, here in my part of the UK it is too cloudy at 9pm. I've checked the weather forecast and set the alarm for 3am. Hopefully I can be out in the garden before my wife realises exactly what time she has been woken up at.
Hi Tony, ironically after rushing to get the video out it started to rain in Brisbane and could not see that moon for low clouds. Hoping tonight will be better. Hope you managed to sneak out and get some shots without waking your wife 😀
Got my Wife a Canon 6D for Mothers day. I can't wait - umm for her - to get it out on a clear night and start shooting the moon!
Yep, and if she can't, I bet you're just itching to have a go!
Yeah, why does Homer Simpson buying Marge a bowling ball for her as a gift come to mind.
Amazing instruction. Thanks so much for being so descriptive for this newbie.
Love this!!!
Thank you, Sir, for this very thorough and very well-explained “How To” video! You are an excellent teacher, in my humble opinion. I look forward to putting your directions into action and hope for a clear night this coming Tuesday, December 29th, 2020 so I can photograph the last Full Moon of 2020! Thanks, again and best wishes!
Thought you'd show some examples at the end. Great video though!
Thanks for watching.
One of the simplest and best tutorial!!
Thank you so much for such clear and detailed instruction.
I think it's important is locking up the mirror, my shots of the moon are using a 5DMk4 150-600 tamron and 2x converter, --- lock up the mirror and a trigger remote cable or radio I also put sand bags on my tripod
Usually the problem is how to focus when you don't have full moon and air pollution especially near to the city / urban areas. best is to take in in desert when you have clear sky and full moon.
no air pollution these days due to lockdown!
Every subject i search, brings me here. How wonderfull.
You did an awesome job explaining this now to see if I can put it in action.
