He figuratively said "once in awhile lets stop giving all these big time actors/directors/writers/producers all this money for a big budget movies and give the next generation a chance". Such a brilliant and genuine well said speech
Called it. That man has been working continuously in writers rooms for 10 years, filling every position that can be worked. He is probably the unsung friend/work acquaintance with half that room! I would love to see what he does next.
Fun fact:
This is the 6th consecutive year that the Best Adapted Screenplay winner was written; or co-written; by that film’s director
Cord might have been the smartest cat in the room. I’d much rather a bunch of cheaper films that actually have soul…
Same. I’m tired of all the superhero bullshit drivel. Give me a movie that makes me feel something that was made for $50K on an iPhone that has a heart over some big budget cash grab any day.
There’s tons of cheap low budget movies out these days though. They go straight to streaming where they belong. It’s mid budget movies that have trouble getting made.
Regarding Black Creatives who've won in this category, this is probably one of my favorite speeches /win of all time.
Let me break it down:
Geoffrey Fletcher becomes the 1st Black person to win Best Adapted Screenplay for the film Precious
John Ridley wins for 12 years of slave
Terell and Barry Jenkins win for Moonlight
Jordan Peele becomes the 1st Black person to win Original Screenplay for GET OUT
Spike Lee FINALLY wins for Black Klansman
All of these past winners were deserving of the award. I'm just glad the storyline was different this time
American Fiction isn’t about slavery, Post Civil rights ERA, Jim Crow, poverty, or black youth trauma
The closet link is to GET OUT. Mainly because they are both satires.
I think what makes American Fiction even more special is that it focuses on a regular Black family. While also asking the question, why aren't there more diverse storytelling of Black life in general.
I see this as an absolute win because Cord Jefferson was one of the writers of The Good Place.
I loved that show! And I totally loved American Fiction. In my opinion, best movie of the year.
This was my favorite Oscars speech!!! So inspiring!!!!
I remember watching the film about a week ago and thinking, “This is one of the best-written films I have seen in ages.” It’s rare that you see movies these days where you think that to yourself. American Fiction presents a message that is very understandable, and doesn’t necessarily beat you over the head with it.
YES I ABSOLUTELY LOVED AMERICAN FICTION ❤️❤️
This is the sixth ceremony in a row where the film’s director wins this award
(2018) Spike Lee - BlackKklansman
(2019) Taika Waititi - Jojo Rabbit
(2020) Florian Zeller - The Father
(2021) Sian Hader - CODA
(2022) Sarah Polley - Women Talking
(2023) Cord Jefferson - American Fiction
I was so haappy Cord won. I remember watching American Fiction and being very impressed by the writing. What a speech too!
Are you serious... i watched the movie... as a whole the movie was okay concept was great but they should have expanded more on that. The trailer is better than the movie in my opionion.
Just watched this movie earlier this afternoon. Such a well done film
So happy for him! This was so deserved. I've watched nearly all of the nominated films, and this one is one of the best films I've seen in a long time
Fantastic script. Can't wait to see his next project.
Most shocking win of the night for me! I LOVE this movie!!!!
Why would it be a shocking win?
Well deserved!
American Fiction was amazing! And it was a blessing to see Leslie Uggams🎁🙏🏽🦋
No way! I grew up in the 70s and haven't seen her in forever! Now I'm really gonna hafta make a point of seeing this
Edit: clarifying "no way" was for emphasis and about Leslie, not about the film being amazing
So happy Cord won. I’ve seen this movie twice so far and compared to the BOOK (Erasure by Perceval Everett???) it was a skillful and humorous adaptation
Cord is right - a smaller budget with a soul is better than a large budget that is souless.
Did you hear that message Disney?
When Cord said, "I only got six seconds!", he wasn't making that number up...I ran his speech with a stopwatch and he said that at 39 sec. with in view of the 45 second rule for Oscars speeches. At first I thought he was simply pulling it out of a hat, and then I learned about the time limit. What a class act.
Studio execs need to hear this. Wonderful speech and wonderful win
Well deserved! Brilliantly written and coded. Cord is a tremendous talent! 👏🏽✨👏🏽
I really like how they brought back the motion graphics from the 2010's Oscars, where the text from the screenplay is written out. Although, it would have been better if it displayed things like the sluglines and stage directions, not just dialogue.
Loooved American fiction so good!!
This should have one best picture too. This was simply one of the best and most memorable films I've seen in my life (50)
He is right. Studios need to be more willing to back original projects and they also need to produce, market and distribute at least 100 seven figure movies instead of 50 nine figure movies.
Godzilla Minus One proves his point. Academy Award winning effects and a global sensation on a ~$15 million dollar budget.
The movie neither vilified nor victimized. And the ending was spectacular! Congrats man ✊🏾
One of the best speeches I've heard in a while
If they gave an Oscar for Best Acceptance Speech, it would go to this one.
I went to high school with him!!!! Go Canyon del Oro High School and Oro Valley/Tucson, Arizona!!!!
YES! YES! A THOUSAND TIMES YES!
He's spitting.
We love to see it!! 🎉🎉
Well deserved! ✨
🎉🎉🎉 YOU NEVER LOSE WHEN YOU BET ON BLACK...⭐🤑👑
I’m happy he won…was my personal fav especially for my people.
I definitely wanna know what he meant by both Greta’s tho?😅😂
I think he thought for a second that Greta Lee was also a director and not actually an actor. I believe she was nominated as well for Past Lives.
Greta Gerwig (director) and Greta Lee (actor).
@@vishalvenkat6She wasn’t nominated for Past Lives, but she should’ve been.
@@vishalvenkat6 thank you. I love Past Lives but forgot the main actresses name.
Brilliant writing! Very witty and real. Well deserved! Congrats! 🎉👍🏾👍🏾
Not related to the video, but he’s kinda daddy af 😍
Thank goodness he won! That movie is brilliant and ought to have won best picture
50 4million films! Yes! Even if only one hits and becomes a hit that would pay for the others. Come on!
I watched the film and thought “This is brilliant. Someone better win SOMETHING!” And for him to win for the screenplay. ✨👌🏾 And this speech is 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
What a speeech! Wow! 👏
This is what some of you get for thinking Oppenheimer or Barbie could pull an upset for Adapted Screenplay. I knew they weren't winning. Congratulations to you, Cord!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great speech, and I think people agree. The amount of money spent on some truly awful big budget garbage, it's just like there's no way some of these pieces of shit like Argylle could be that bad AND cost that much money.
American Fiction wasn’t that great though LOL.
Your opinion @@DerekDirk-eb8dj
@@celticdw1983 I said what I said.
While I partially like the Original Screenplay category more, I love the screenplay categories the most non the less
Exactly.
My favorite speech of the night. De Niro looked really pleased.
I really appreciated Cord’s speech
My nominees:
- American Fiction
- Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret
- Killers of the Flower Moon
- Oppenheimer
- Poor Things
Winner: Oppenheimer
Steven Spielberg was like, "what about me?"
The best speech!
I'd like to see Marty make a $20 Mil movie again!!!
At least it won against Barbie. So I am happy that American Fiction won.
1:35
I didn’t even know he won but I am SOOOOOO glad he did!!! I really enjoyed American Fiction; I even laughed out loud in the theater and that is something I don’t really do (bc most things today aren’t that funny). The movie had even had me looking up the director halfway through lol. So yeah, well-deserved.
Marty looked so darn proud
He almost made Scorcesse Cry!
Best acceptance speech
Thanks for loving me!!!
you know, two animated films would have deserved a nomination for this category: Nimona and Super Mario Movie
Modern day Bamboozled (2001).
He fine too
Bro was preaching 🗣️🗣️
Richly deserved.
Or 13 and 1/3 Godzilla Minus One movies which has better special effects than a 200 million budget movies.
While I found some aspects of the film, mainly the contrived family drama/romance to be approaching basic sitcom territory, overall a great movie and he gave a real nice speech.
Interesting perspective. I didn't find the family drama or romance contrived at all. As a Black woman, I thought it was refreshing to see a Black family on screen outside of the typical tropes of slavery, civil rights or Up From Nothing (bootstraps). I thought he cleverly kept things both cynical and real.
I saw American fiction last week (I wasn't able to see it before), and what can I say other than that Cord Jefferson deserved the Oscar for the best original screenplay, he made an extraordinary film and the screenplay is brilliant!
It's adapted from the book
While I may not agree with the choice this was easily my favorite speech of the show
To me, what he said about wanting more lower budget films to give more people opportunities to work was immediately contradicted by the names that he listed after. Scorsese, Gerwig, Nolan were collectively there for only 3 movies that had a cumulative budget of 400+ million dollars. So what exactly is Cord Jefferson calling for? More filmmakers to become elite exceptions that make movies with budgets over 100 mill?
I don’t see it as a contradiction. He’s saying make more movies thereby giving more filmmakers opportunities. Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut was the $10 million Lady Bird. Nolan’s breakout movie was the $9 million Memento. I assume Scorcese’s debut was low budget too. Cord Jefferson didn’t have a lot of time for nuance up on the stage, but I doubt he meant those directors’ most recent movies shouldn’t have been made. But I think we can all think of terrible movies with bloated budgets that aren’t furthering filmmaking as an art and also ended up not making money either. Anyway, my two cents!
@@litlcatfeet I mean... it's not really Hollywood's main goal to give new filmmakers opportunities, that would be the Sundance Institute's goal. Hollywood is about making money. Big budget films usually yield BIG box office numbers. Do I personally want more indie and arthouse films? Yes! But that's just not the reality of the focus.
And it was definitely a contradiction. You cannot call for an industry redistribution of funds, then exalt the select few hoarding all the funds for their 3 movies. Of course the 3 he named started small. Everyone starts small. Where they are now, however, is a part of the problem he's speaking about. Cord needs to pick a side.
Ava Duvernay, who was also in the Oscars audience that night, just raised funds INDEPENDENTLY for Origin. Why not shout her out from the stage? Oh, bc maybe....more people being like her is the ACTUAL solution. She's solution focused. Cord was also complaining in the press room after the win about not having a range of Black stories told in Hollywood. My tip to him: "Be like Ava and stop idolizing the white elite exceptions."
Where’s Jonathan Glazer’s speech?
Cord Jefferson is now halfway to EGOT Status. He only needs a Grammy & Tony to complete the feat.
Y’all could have chosen a better thumbnail for this
Give some fucking respect to other movies. It's not like Barbie is the only good movie in the world
First comment
This movie was so frickin good ❤
Well deseverd.
1. American Fiction
2. Oppenheimer
3. Barbie
4. Poor Things
5. The Zone of Interest
This guy is basically complaining.....
about what?
Great film. Great writer. But there's something a little off about the guy.
Looking back at this win now 2 weeks Greta should have won something 🙄🙄🙄🙄😒😒😒
Nah
Should have been barbie 😒😒😒😒😑
It's a good thing he can write because he damn sure can't speak. 😂 wtf is he talking about 🤣
Can't believe goofy fluff movie Barbie got any nominations
That dude's black?
Yes!!!!
bro gotta be half or grandpa grandma or soemthing jeezes@@celticdw1983
He’s bi-racial
From among the first four, Oppenheimer should have one.
I didn't watch Poor Things.
You're missing out if you don't watch Poor Things
Oppenheimer doesn't need to win everything
Oppenheimer should've won but this is deserving too. Barbie Should've In Original Screenplay. Wish Across The Spider-Verse got Nominated.
Nolan is brilliant as usual but he had help from the boo on this particular project. this was from scratch so i think they took that into consideration
Should have been
Best Adapted Screenplay
The Zone Of Interest
Barbie
Killers Of The Flower Moon
Oppenheimer
Radical
Winner Oppenheimer
One of the 2024 Oscar Misfires.
Oppenheimer should have had this hands-down. The film's structure, perspective, and complexity perfectly match the source material's "cross-examinational" quality as it delves into the paradoxical figure that was J. Robert Oppenheimer.
And considering it does all this with arguably some of the most important subject matter on Earth - that of cautionary tale of the ability of scientists to create existential risk to destroy mankind - is one of utmost importance.
Seriously - civil rights, feminism, even the Holocaust - none of these are even remotely close to the importance of alleviating existential risks to mankind - Climate Change, Nuclear War, and Artificial Intelligence.
Thankfully Oppenheimer won many others, but it truly deserved all the awards of the night. It's a masterpiece.
Because we've NEEEEEEVER had a film teaching lessons of nuclear war!!? C'mon, now. Those of us born before 1980 were inundated with these cautionary films and TV specials.
Oppenheimer doesn't need to win everything PLUS American Fiction has been winning all the precursors
Have you seen this film?
@2conscioustoo It's not just caution against Nuclear War, you donut. It's the ethical and moral implications of pursuing truth whose zero-sum situation results in the ability to destroy ourselves. That hasn't been explored before.
And by your logic, you could similarly say we've NEEEVER had a film exploring race relations with the black community and the media. You's a smart cookie, buddy boy.
Come on chill out Oppenheimer 1 best movie of the year and they won a bunch of awards for the Oscars seriously chill out please There's a lot of other movies that didn't win anything
I don’t want to be rude but American Fiction has the worst screenplay in this category. I don’t understand how it won.
Could you elaborate I’m curious
It’s such a weak script that uses satire as a crutch for its weak character development and story structure. Zone of Interest, Oppenheimer, and Poor Things did vastly better.
@@comfeefortwhat’s wrong with that? Please explain your vitriol?
I agree
American Fiction is more reliant on its script than the other nominees. The other nominees had musical numbers, explosions, amazing visuals from great directors. American Fiction, on the screen, is a lot like what's on the page
No
Yes! and we love it!
Well the Academy didn't agree so YES and well deserved
Cry
Well deserved!
