Afonja - Old Yoruba Movie of How Ilorin Became a Fulani Emirate

  • Ilorin is a city, traditional emirate, and capital of Kwara State, western Nigeria. It is located on the Awun River, a minor tributary of the river Niger. Founded in the late 18th century by Yoruba people, it became the capital of a kingdom that was a vassal state of the Oyo empire.
Oyo’s commander at Ilorin, Kakanfo (Field Marshal) Afonja, led a rebellion in 1817 that destroyed the unity of the empire. He was aided by Mallam Alimi (a Fulani from Sokoto), by Fulani warriors and slaves, and by Hausa slaves. Afonja was increasingly dominated by the Muslim Fulani, and, upon his assassination, Alimi’s son, Abd al-Salam (Abdul Salami), became emir of Ilorin and pledged allegiance (c. 1829) to the Sokoto caliphate.
As a Muslim emirate, Ilorin subjugated several towns in Yorubaland and destroyed the Oyo capital, Oyo Ile (Old Oyo, or Katunga), 40 miles (64 km) northwest, in 1837. Abd al-Salam conducted a jihad toward the sea and was only stopped by the Ibadan victory over his cavalrymen at Oshogbo in 1840.
Throughout the 19th century, Ilorin served as a major trade centre between the Hausa of the north and the Yoruba of the south. It strongly resisted British rule, and not until 1897, when the army of the Royal Niger Company arrived after conquering Bida (106 miles east-northeast), did Ilorin recognize British supremacy.
In 1900 Ilorin emirate was the only part of Yorubaland to be included in the Northern Nigeria Protectorate, which, later in the colonial period, developed into the Northern Province and then the Northern Region. With the subdivision of the country’s administrative regions in 1967, Ilorin became part of West Central (later Kwara) state.
Modern Ilorin is mainly inhabited by Muslim Yoruba people, although its traditional ruler is a Yoruba-speaking Fulani emir. Surrounding the historic central district with its traditional single-story red-mud houses with thatched straw roofs and numerous mosques, all protected by a mud wall, the modern city is an industrial, commercial, and educational centre.
It is a major market for locally raised crops (yams, cassava [manioc], corn [maize], sorghum, millet, rice, peppers, peanuts [groundnuts], shea nuts, kola nuts, cotton) and for cattle, hides, and poultry. Local handicrafts include pottery making, wood carving, leatherworking, cloth weaving, and mat and basket weaving.
The growing industrial sector now includes sugar refining, food processing, soft-drink bottling, match and soap manufacturing, and ironworking. There are several banks and insurance companies that serve the city and state.

History has repeated itself again. What a shame!
BOKO HARI has brought Wild Fulani kinsmen from African countries to help him fight democracy dominated by the Southern Presidency.
Now he won election and the armed wildlife he brought took to the forest to constitute nuisance and banditry.
Because they are his people he concord to look away and help them take over the forests all over the country.
This social disorder is metamorphosing into ethnic war.
    Southern Nigerians, wise up .

This is a funny cock and bull story about the history of Ilorin. This does not represent the true history of Ilorin. It is unfortunate that anyone will ever produce this trash as the epic story of Ilorin in view of the well-documented and reliable historical account of the formation of Ilorin and the circumstances leading to the ascendance of the Alimi dynasty in Ilorin.
Well, the producer of this firm has done a great disservice to the people of Ilorin by presenting a false narration of their history. The participation of respected actors in this firm leaves a sense of disappointment.
A historical firm of this nature ought to have an authentic and verifiable source of information and not just a jaundiced account of the history of the people of Ilorin. I do not think the producer realized that this was not just a movie but a work which supposed to tell an accurate and reliable historical account of the origin of the people of Ilorin. This is unfortunate and I believe at the right time a more reliable account of the events will soon be out to complement other documentary evidence of the history of Ilorin. This firm is therefore nothing but a lazy work of acting with reckless insensitivity to the consequences of so many lies put together and the implication of misinforming viewers of the true story of Ilorin. This is unfortunate.

Yorubas are too simplistic in dealing with strangers in their mist, encouraging the strangers already in their mist to become formidable enemies, easily defeating the Yorubas in their own land. No true victorious warrior brings war to himself. He takes war to the enemy. Not the Yoruba. He is too simplistic. In present day Nigeria, see how the Yorubas accommodated the Igbos who now claim Lagos is no man's land as a first step to claiming Lagos is Igboland. Sadly, some Yoruba leaders claiming civilisation, are quarrelling with Yorubas resisting the Igbos.

Even though there are some errors in the story line and how the norms and culture of the old Oyo Empire was portrayed, but yet it's still a great movie. Guns were not used to fight wars then. Our forefathers used bow and arrow, cutlasses, sword and spear. Also, the Basorun is the leader of that expedition and 10x superior to the Kakanfo, he can't be calling the Kakanfo" Lo gun Ofe". Also, the Onikoyi is a king,Afonja can't send him on an errand like that. Alaafin Aole committed suicide, he wasn't killed. Solagberu and Alimi are not paddies

      Valid Points

    • @adebayoadeniran6675
      @adebayoadeniran6675 Před 10 dny +5

well, these are valid points but let me point this out.
      1. don't forget that oyo empire did heavy slave trade so they had guns from europeans, also there were locally made gun those days fortified with charms but yes most of the warfare weaponry were bow&arrows, cutlasses and spears.
      2. it is true that the basorun, prime minister of the oyo empire and head of the oyomesi is 10× superior to the kakanfo but that was before ga'a in the mediaeval times of imperial oyo. ga'a was the last most feared and fearsome basorun to which after his death the empire came across a steady horrible decline, so in this movie the basorun wasn't ga'a and at the time the kakanfo was already the post of the supreme commander of the entire yoruba army, an honour to oyabi by abiodun after he resuced him from ga'a, afonja made kakanfo by awole (who was rumoured to have killed his father, abiodun) also an oyo prince was so prominent than the basorun who was now just a mere commander of the army inside the metropolitan oyo.
      3. onikoyi is a king, yes but a sublet king of one of the 7 provinces of oyo back then not a high king, so the kakanfo has prominence over him as he was the supreme commander of the entire oyo army in all 7 provinces and wide afar into captive cities.
i think you underrate the prominence of the aare ona kakanfo afonja..
      4. alaafin aole wasn't killed yes, he committed ritual suicide, he was a terrible king though but the oyomesi at the time was so so corrupt that they barely let him had his reign in peace.
      5. solagberu and alimi weren't paddies, true, they only collided to bring down kakanfo because of his greed and heavy vye for power at all cost, just like ga'a..
solagberu is a fool though, idk why you would betray your kinsmen like that, he was later killed by alimi's son abdulsalam who was the first emir of ilorin as an empire of the fulani emirate under the sokoto caliphate..
      thank you. 👍🏼

Ilorin history is a very sad one. The Fulani took over Ilorin with deceit and forcefully took their land, raped and forcefully married the Yorubas just like what the Boko haram did to the Chibok girls. Hence, the reason you see many of them speaking yoruba fluently and giving themselves yoruba names. They are Omo ale!

Please guys Ilorin did NOT conquer all yoruba nations but they destroyed old Oyo kingdom. Also know that many commanders of ilorin army were yorubas. In 1840 were permanently defeated by only Ibadan army. Also know that ilorin always collabo with other yoruba nations and alliances. However, divisions among yorubas were very common which eventually brought down the Yoruba empire.
