  • Just before Christmas, I decided to have some alone time on my favourite place in the world - the Isle of Arran. I decided to vlog the trip, to show you guys everything the island has to offer - top notch roads, amazing scenery and some awesome history.
It was also my first road trip in the car since it got worked on at The Smallest Cog. Check out those new white wheels!
Here is the place I stayed on Arran, the Little Beach House in Corrie: www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/214469...

The greatest complement that I can offer is that I just sat (in Miami) through a 26 min video set on a small, rainy, cold and gloomy island (I know not all year and with full appreciation of its natural beauty) with one guy, searching in the wilderness of Scotland, for relics that don't really interest me at all and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire adventure and living vicariously through the very down to earth host. A wonderful counter to all of the glitz and glamour, fake life, youtube travel junk. Hats off.

Hi, the Barytes mines in glen Sannox have other adits which I have explored, you unfortunately missed them, they are above that first big pond you were at which is actually a collapse, there is also a lot of evidence of the small gauge railway on that side of the glen. I am an Arranach and my grandfather worked in those mines. The crushing/processing plant was water powered and there is still evidence of one of the water wheels which drove it, then the railway took the product down to two hoppers which were near where you were parked at the entrance to the sand quarry, then there was a second railway where the carts were loaded and pushed by hand to the pier on the beach and into Clyde Puffers (small cargo boats) and taken off the island. At half/low tide you can still see the remains of the timber piles on the beach which was the pier. There was a second railway on the south end of the village of Corrie which is where sandstone was cut and moved up to the sandstone harbor by railway and again shipped out by Puffer. Even though I have lived on Arran all my life I enjoy seeing other peoples perspective on it, I think my Hilux and local knowledge might give your island lap record a run for its money ;-)

I have fond memories of Arran. Went there for GCSE or A-level geography in about ‘99 or 2000, I think.
Too young to visit the distillery, but I bought a bottle 20 years later in Dallas, of all places.
Took me back to the long hikes from the youth hostel where I was the only one to volunteer to carry the supplies bergen.

I've been to Arran once and as you say, the roads are amazing. If you're planning to go home the same day, be prepared to a possible overnight as the ferry might not go back to the mainland depending on the weather or the currents of the sea. I had to stay overnight and catch the first ferry available the next day. I live in Ayrshire so wherever you go, Arran is always there. I'll deffo go back again.

I live on the west coast, grew up on the isle Mull. Great to see someone enjoying and taking advantage of the insane beauty of this side of the country. If anything it needs to brought up more. Fantastic roads and scenery like "Rest and be Thankful". Or have the final leg as over to Islay and "collect 8 bottles of Whisky from their distillery" and end it at somewhere like Port Wemyss.

Mike - greetings from New York ... I'm enjoying your videos, but this one struck a delightful chord, taking me back to '86 ... I had picked up a terrific '82 Audi Coupe, whose 5 speed, 5 cylinder configurtion just blew away my previous 4 cyl/4 spd Fox and 4000 models ... I knew I wanted a driving vacation and instead of going north to Ottawa (featuring some great small town and mountain roads from Albany to Ogdensburg) like I had done a few summers previous, I decided to veer northeast thru New England up US1 ... while on Campobello Island where FDR's summer home was located I looked at my map and saw Nova Scotia and what appeared to be great roadway system encircling the island: "That's it!" was my reaction ... not interested in setting any speed records for the route (as that would be impractical), I was rewarded with a very satisfying drive, both car-wise and eye-wise ... the Audi Coupe was fabulous for the whole outing
thanks again for great content (and seeing your tan Yankee hat at the beginning!)

For those narrow roads a sporty Key-Car like the Suzuki Cappuccino would be a good choice (if you fit in one of these).
But I don't like the idea of going for laptimes on public roads, at least you mentioned the risks.

I once had an adder in our kitchen. We have heated floors maybe that’s why. Put it outside. Not a bit fan of snakes not normally a problem in Scotland.

Mike, if you love snakes, you have to come to Oz mate. You will get your fill for sure! Awesome film, stunning scenery, well done!

I'd like to bring an old Saab Turbo there, maybe a 99 or a 900i. Seems like a ton of fun!

For future reference, most phones allow you to switch the mirroring of the selfie camera in the settings. Saves having to mess around in edit.

Take a selection of cars over and see which one works best. Modern , classic , variety would be cool 👍

I notice they never go to the West Coast (TGT/TG). They have never gone up past Loch Lomond and all the amazing scenery and roads there. I can't understand that. I also think they avoid Glasgow. I suspect some English people think the once "2nd City of the Empire" is some kind of Rab C Nesbitt slumland. Even Edinburgh gets a bad deal. In Lochdown they did that lame meme of tiny cobbled streets etc
