This is my cousin. I'm an American Sean McElwain. My father tried to convince Seamus to come to the states for education in the mid 70's right before i was born. He said he could not leave the struggle. Whatever you think about his beliefs or actions. He was a brave son of a gun. Well respected and monumental in the escape from Maze prison in Longfellow. R.I.P.

    • @BrianMcElwain
      @BrianMcElwain Před 2 lety +2

He's my first cousin, and my middle namesake.
My father inherited that farm and sold it, as we are in Canada and have no use for an Irish farm.
From what I heard, he wore out his boots at an astonishing rate.
I have the boxwood fiddle he made while in hiding after Long Kesh.
I went to Ireland on a fullbright scholarship as a gaeilgoire (irish language learner) .
Everywhere I went, upon hearing I was a McElwain, the people of an Cheathrú Rua(Carraroe) were so kind.
As for his demise, some say he was a hero, and others say he was a cold blooded killer.
But I recall Bertolt Brecht's Interrogation of the good:
      Step forward: we hear
That you are a good man.
You cannot be bought, but the lightning
      Which strikes the house, also
      Cannot be bought.
You hold to what you said.
      But what did you say?
You are honest, you say your opinion.
      Which opinion?
      You are brave.
      Against whom?
      You are wise.
      For whom?
You do not consider your personal advantages.
Whose advantages do you consider then?
      You are a good friend.
Are you also a good friend of the good people?
      Hear us then: we know.
You are our enemy. This is why we shall
Now put you in front of a wall. But in consideration of your merits and good qualities
We shall put you in front of a good wall and shoot you
With a good bullet from a good gun and bury you
With a good shovel in the good earth.

What can be said about this brave young man that hasn’t already been said , I didn’t know this lad but I heard so much about him . I remember his death like so many as a young Republican I listened intently to the bias British media celebrating the execution of a man they could not hold , a man they knew they had to kill as he would never have let them rest in his country . It fills me with pride to be associated with a lad like this by calling myself a Republican. Had he lived he would still be fighting them with whatever means political or physical. His family and friends must be so proud sad but proud he gave no quarter nor did he expect no quarter from his enemy . Britan or to be more precise England are already half way out the door with the border in the Irish sea, should never have trusted that taig boris even got married again in a taig chaple . Scotland are packing their bags and getting ready to move back into the Eu. The Scots have long memory's and remember the auld allies, they should never have trusted the the auld enemy but then what would you expect from the Sasnach. In a few years there will be no one left but the English and maybe the Welsh

Seamus mclwaine could have gone on the run like some did after the great escape though he seen his purpose as going back into active service he was on the run active up to his death in 86 when he was killed by enemy forces when they realised it was seamus that they shot his comrade Sean Lynch tells u this they were shouting at seamus then executed him as he had much success against the enemy forces of Erin rest n peace seamus a true son of Erin we will not forget you 🇮🇪32

No, Seamus was not 'assassinated'. He was killed by crown forces - because he was a very real threat to them, and also to the rest of the people of Northern/Ireland.
So let's get the facts straight rather than make heroes of those guys like Seamus who were just stumbling along with their own idea of Irish unity (which I'm all for, as it happens).
Terrible, inhumane acts were carried out on all sides, far too many times - so let's all own up to that, all of us.
Let's not repeat that long, long sad history, yet again.
Tomorrow really is a new tomorrow for Ireland - and also, by default, the rest of the 'no so', United Kingdom.

@@tomaddie1969 Yeah the thing is his revolutionary thinking brought to Ireland and spread by Jesuit propaganda started the whole crap fest and got many many Irish civilians killed, divided the country and caused endless hurt.
Him and his fellow stooges started the whole thing on behalf of the Vatican with its lies and contempt for human life.
      Glad he’s 6ft under👍
