      sAmE. I was really hyped for a darker more maturely themed album and was initially a little underwhelmed by MotS: Persona. But then I realized that that was supposed to be an upbeat album to represent their Personas. Hopefully when they release Shadow (or ego) they'll stray a bit from the happy, poppy feel that they've been embracing recently. I miss the more emotional-sounding, personal songs that remind you that the members have struggles just like all of us.

    Also to adds Namjoon's “persona” is “per-so-NA” & “na” (나) in korean is “me” so persoNA(ME). and then “who the hell am I”, he emphasizes both “ME” & “I” saying “me” in two different languages which could also mean that although “me” could have different interpretations, it’s still ME. which means that even though they are from two different languages, it still leads to its meaning which is “me” or “i.” we can compare this analogy to who we are as ourselves. although we have different “versions” of ourselves, all these versions all mean one thing which is who we are. that these different versions are just all ourselves even though we’re different.
    And Joon really put he's all personalities Kim Namjoon, R.M(the idol), the Rapper.

    I agree completely with your analysis. However, I also suggest looking into the types of clothing Kim Nam Joon wears while in the MV. I noticed that one was relatively normal but the rest were very specific. The robe (idk) was something he wore for BTS, the hood was clearly a rapper; those were obvious. The white clothing I took to be a blank slate while the suit was him being a citizen of Korea and being in the workforce. There is also a time where he is sitting on a pedestal while everyone looks up to him saying he is being looked up to by many. Idk, some extra stuff I noticed.

    Your interpretation of the "But, Kim Namjoon" line actually makes more sense than what most of Twitter is going off about. It fits more with how RM is like in his writing. Most ARMYs tend to forget that all he's written about for haters is that they're whatever, they'll always be there so let them stew in their own juices basically. You actually reminded me of a vlive he's done before where he actually addresses this feeling of not knowing if there's a difference or a line between Namjoon and RM. He's always ruminating in his thoughts it seems of what it is to be one's self. I feel that the line is like saying but I'm still Me. RM takes the foreground and is the one that stands upfront but, behind it all I'm still Kim Namjoon. He's accepted that this is what happened and that he shouldn't feel bad about it but embrace that this is how he's changed over the years.

      I love how you explained it! And i agree with you. The twitter interpretation imo doesnt fit with this song. The theme is about persona and 'who am i' so it doesnt make sense that he would just suddenly talk about haters.

      @LilaBubble Před 5 lety +28

      He also mentioned before that he's been so busy living life as RM that he didn't get to live as Kim Namjoon: a man who likes to sit in nature, meet friends. So he's been making a conscious effort to spend more time as Kim Namjoon.

    • @MiMi-jx9wm
      @MiMi-jx9wm Před 5 lety +24

      maybe since in the previous verses he talks about how he tumbles on regret, and what makes him stand again is the "but"before his name. It could be he wanted to own something that was negatively associated to him, and turn it into something positive. Like how haters would use "but namjoon made xx mistake" he turns it into "but namjoon learned, became stronger, more educated, etc.". I wouldn't rule out both interpretations as they can complete each other.

    I interpreted the line “but I’m not embarrassed this is the map of my soul” as him more accepting his persona as part of his map rather than him overinflating it as his soul!
    looking more into the theory, personas aren’t necessarily bad; it’s natural to act differently in different situations and it all makes up a part of who we are. I think he initially /was/ concerned or embarrassed that he was overidentifying himself as RM, but now he’s accepted that, while it’s not all of who he is at his core, it’s still a part of him! also ties into the IDOL lyrics of “There are hundreds of me’s inside of me I’m facing a new me again today It’s all me anyway”

I think rn, RM is acknowledging that he has a mask and is identifying its purpose, which is to speak for his supporters and be the leader we know him as, as DK said , but in the end, it will be concluded that everyone must face their shadow and accept it as part of their true identity, as you said.

    I heard somewhere that the line about the 'but' that always comes before the three syllables of his name could mean the haters going "BuT kIM NamJoOn did tHis" or just generally pointing out his flaws.His 'other sides' are being brought to light either by he himself or others. Besides, the previous line said it is what keeps him going. if you look at it that way, it might be a kind of motivation to him - trying to prove the haters, or just the fact that he has flaws/a different side wrong.

    - persona - masked character. Borrowed personality in certain situations. It can take over you whole self. Not the totality of the being.
    - ego. Character belives who he should be and ofc bot the true self.
    - shadow. Sum of traits pushed back deep away from the awareness into the unconciousness due to bad things. Characteristics that can't be seen. Rectriction of the persona to the shadow.
    - "who am i" . Confuse with who he really is. Journey of true consciousness and unconciousness to reach the true self.
    - hesitation is a shadow.
    - "but" in front of nam joon -- keeps him going on.
    - noones wants to see the real NAMJOON.

    Persona ties in so well with Fake Love. If you think of Fake Love from the shadow's perspective, its actually an apology from BTS to the ARMY, because the ARMY have fallen in love with the persona of BTS. This love is then a "fake love." 🤯 (I've been thinking about this interpretation of Fake Love for a while. But I always thought I was wrong since I never saw anyone talk about it. Persona ties it all together though... at least in my head).
    Edit: Just to clarify some confusions I saw in the comments below: I meant that, through Fake Love, BTS is apologizing to the fans because they had to put out this persona when they started, which the fans have fallen in love with. Since the fans have fallen in love with this exterior mask, and not their truest selves, it is a type of "fake love." I hope that clarifies some things.

    Hey Danny, I appreciate the explanation. Although I don’t think you understood what Jung explained about the “Persona”. He didn’t portray it as a negative or fake thing. A better way to explain it would be as the “roles” we take on daily. For example, your Persona is not the same when you are with your kid as when you are with your coworkers.
    Dr. Murray explained:
    “It’s an interface between you and others”
    “We have different personas, doesn’t make us different people”
    “It’s natural, we do it instictually”
    “In a sense we’re all of these... we aren’t simple, not only who we think we are or who we know we are... we have a conscious and an unconscious part”
    Other than that, great video

    • @templerose2471
      @templerose2471 Před 5 lety +10

      Well this is true I suppose but in some cases (as in that of my own self) our personas can have a negative impact on our whole being. We can get lost in our personas or overwhelmed and have too many to keep up with and become a slaved to them. I’m just recovering from a very harmful situation my persona got me into and now I’m realizing I never let my true self out anymore. I almost lost my self. Now I’m in recovery and stripping away the personas to find me. So for some it can be very complicated and very negative if we don’t have a strong sense of self (or who we really are) and especially if we have self hate.

      you are right that they are all me but is it ok to hide your true self ( even if it's for the good) in front of others. u know like why are we hiding our true selves ? why do we have different persona's?For the sake of others even if u didn't want to.How can we call this a positive trait( although though it comes out naturally😂,and I question it Everytime) I think removing the bad habits is important than hiding it.We can't let PERSONA to take over our SELF (which is very hard to achieve in this world) Like Namjoon said yesterday was he with all his flaws , now is also him and in future will be him embracing himself with all his flaws and good's while try to improve himself more. all in all trying to be true to yourself is important (cause deep down we know all our good and bad things)but we are fooling ourselves which seems natural but it hurts when you think about it. so to not get hurt it is important to embrace ourself while improving . sorry it's pretty long (I couldn't control my😂) +for grammatical mistakes too😅

      Again, these are Jung’s words not mine. There’s many Personas and all are part of the being. None of them is “fake”. If you want to solely understand what Jung says about the “Persona” in “Map of The Soul” you have to get the concept of a fake mask out of your head because that’s not how he describes it at all. Maybe BTS comes through with their own personal take on it. But I just keep repeating Jung’s words.
      Being different with your child than with your coworkers is not a “bad habit” and it’s not “being fake”. It’s natural and both of those personas is you.
      But I’m getting tired of explaining. Just read the book and see for yourslef what Jung said.

    I do think this album will be darker, but not maybe in the way that Tear was or many may think. I believe we may be getting back to their roots, back to the time that they created their personas. We may have songs like this that are expressing a struggle, but doing it through the guise of the persona or multiple personas of the members. We may have hyper sexual, hyper cute, overly excited, extremely romantic songs on here because they are superficial characters masking that shadow. I think Shadow will be the most obviously dark of the trilogy because there we are going to confront what's underneath. The Personas are beautiful. The Shadow is the painful, hidden unconscious.

    In an industry where even a simple tweet from an idol goes viral. Just imagine how much that can feed someone’s ego. How many celebrities have you seen who’s been devoured by their inflated ego. Making it very hard for them to really know who they are when fans, label, friends and family tell them who and what they are. Again another masterpiece for RM. I really appreciate RM’s honesty and transparency. I honestly don’t think he realizes bow many people have been touched by his music and have learned to acknowledge and love their real self.

    I am a psychologist ARMY and I love this explainer video! I learned quite a bit and felt you did a fantastic job. I disagree with one thing. You say the overidentification with RM is the Map of Kim Namjoon's Soul. I think that the whole song itself is the Map. By describing and naming his RM persona thereby differentiating it from other parts of his true self, he begins to draw the Map of His Soul. He is mapping all the parts, breaking down the identifcation and opening up the chance to see and explore the Map itself. By putting RM and Kim Namjoon on the Map, he shows that he knows that neither of these is his whole soul.

    Thank you for all your research and insight! For me, it’s how Namjoon perceives the different versions he sees himself- the idol, the leader, the rapper, and his real self: Kim Namjoon. Having to put on so many masks when people are expecting so much of you, it’d make sense if he started questioning his identity, who he really is and who he stands for- just like in Do You, his earlier song.

    The first time I heard the song, I could relate with the lyrics. I am not an “RM” by any means, but how I project myself sometimes feels like it is more me, than the other parts of me. Fuelling it is also how I perceive others to perceive me. I think for the members of BTS, this is amplified. When do they get to be just themselves? When are they not on “stage”? After all, the whole world has become their stage. Everything is scrutinized and judged by everyone. With cameras recording their image every where they turn. It is like living in a glass bubble. I think that your interpretation is likely very close to what RM is trying to express. This was definitely a great teaser and I am looking forward to it. Thanks for your input!

    • @doraaaa0613
      @doraaaa0613 Před 5 lety +1

      exactly! i think any celebrity must have these problems amplified. the persona, the ego, and the shadow even more deeply hidden. and i think this is why namjoon has been so open about his identity struggles. imagine getting such positive reinforcement and so much attention from your celebrity/stage persona and going back home to your regular self. i feel there's a natural dissociation that could happen.. it's interesting and a bit sad. ive always molded myself in accordance with my audience and behaved differently in front of different people and struggled with that a lot, thinking i have no concrete personality at all and i should fix that. when i came to realize that it is all me, i started becoming more comfortable with it. i wonder how taxing it must be for the bts members.

    This song's lyrical meaning reminds me again of how Kim Nam Joon is a very reflective, thoughtful, deep, intelligent and kind person. These are signs of someone who is interested in improving themselves continously while remaining down to earth and compassionate towards others, including himself.
    Also, this reflects their company. Big Hit in general is like this as well. Which makes them special. I always say this: if you are going to do something that in some way helps/fights for/speaks up for social justice/social issues/moral values/human values, then, other humans, other people, will naturally be drawn towards you in their hearts and souls. BTS have consistently done this since their debut, in their music, charity, campaigns, UN speech etc. It's no wonder that millions of people are genuinely interested in them and care for them. They are naturally attracted to BTS; it's only human. So yea, this is the main reason, in my opinion, for what's happening right now with regards to their popularity and presence.

    Thank you for digging deep and explaining more about the upcoming album. I’ve loved bts since 2017 and actually regretted not knowing them since debut but for a few years of hearing their music I think Namjoon (self) made himself a representation of everyone of us, that we all have our RM’s (persona) that come out not because we try to hide something but because we do what society expects us to be. People will always love us when we do good and there will always be very little to no room for mistakes. The persona we project is always strong, unbothered and uptight but when no one’s looking we go back to our self, the perfectly imperfect self. We just have to be able to come up with the means not to be too consumed by our personas. RM is BTS’s leader but at the end of the day, he will always be Kim Namjoon, human and imperfect sometimes and just like him, we fight our battles everyday.
