Funny you said "big bait catches big fish".. I agree with that in most cases...but my biggest pike in 40 years of fishing was March 5 2022...it was 51.75 inches long (we have a great vid on you tube)...it was caught on a pickerel rig with 6lb snelled trout hooks tied to 8lb line...baited with a small dead minnow...4 feet of water...33 inches of ice...was interesting (can you say Murphy's law)...we landed it though...caught in a canadian rockies lake in alberta... Great vid...very informative...going to give your tips a try...keep em coming From my very frozen snowy igloo on the mountain in Canada D 🇨🇦

Experienced based logic and reason. People who know how to think and not what to think. Thanks for paying attention to your words and context. Well done.
I'm a wicked experienced ice angler I've caught several 36-38 and one 40 I've even gotten a 54 inch musky open water. I enjoyed your video. You gave me some confidence for tomorrow my first day targetting pike I took a whole year off for salmon & trout. I'm confident I'm going to topside a giant with that hook set advice I always let them run with it they spit often too. Here we cannot even use dead alewive because it's so invasive they're super protective of the Adirondacks in NY
I want to solder all of my tip ups. I absolutely hate when the braid unspools itself. I tried soldering mine but the shaft is not accepting the solder. What is the trick? Did you have to sand the chrome off of the shaft or anything prior to soldering? Did you disassemble the shaft to solder or can you do it with it assembled. Any help is appreciated. I think it would be a cool How-To video if you ever have the time.
@@fishitfirst2798 Another quick question if you don’t mind. Would you recommend casting parallel or perpendicular to the drop-offs (when the lake is not frozen)?
@@victorl.6996 depends on the lure. For example if casting and yoyoing a jigging rap, I’d go parallel. A good perpendicular approach is to cast lindy rigs up a steep break and super slowly roll retrieve it down the break.
Forgot to mention, we are placing the bait 1.5’ off the bottom regardless of depth.
No matter the time/month? Do you run a few at different lengths to dial it in better?
This is probably one of the most helpful video for targeting big pike!

Thanks! Keep the tips coming 😃
Will do!
Flouro over steel everyday. Northerns are visual hunters and the easiest way to get less flags is to use a wire leader.

Where can I buy alewifes?
I was just wondering where I could buy alewife from? Thanks for your time
Great video, thanks for the tips! What map was that? I’m often near that lake.
That was Navionics. Easy one to complement our points in the videos, but definitely not our mapping system of choice for this lake.

Where do we find Alewives?
Most bait stores sell them in packs of four. Be sure labeling says “VHS” free. By this time in season they will be harder to get.
@@fishitfirst2798 thank you!
Do you know of any online retailers?
@@kdhag99 I wish I could help you there but I do not know of any. I buy all of mine locally.
Those pike are hogs!!
On ‘em!
