  • Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki. What can one say about Chivo? Seven time-Oscar nominated (with undoubtedly an eighth nomination around the corner this week). Two-time Oscar winner. More than 100 other awards and countless accolades the world over for his cinematographic work. He is, quite simply, not only one of the best cinematographers working today, but one of the best in film. . . And while Chivo’s storytelling through lensing and lighting has been beyond impressive and unforgettable thus far (his work is THE reason why I will watch a Malick film), his crowning glory is Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s THE REVENANT.
Inspired by true events and the story of 1820's trapper and explorer/scout Hugh Glass, THE REVENANT is a testament not only to man’s survival in the battle of man versus man, man versus nature, man versus himself, but a testament to Chivo Lubezki.
Shot with all natural light under some of the most difficult conditions Mother Nature has to offer, THE REVENANT is a visual stunner, with each image more powerful, more beautiful than the last.
On December 17, 2015, film critic debbie elias sat down with Chivo for this exclusive interview. Take a listen now to what Chivo had to say about THE REVENANT. . .

This film is our "Lawrence of Arabia." It is one of the most beautifully shot films in history.

No one will be talking about this movie 70yrs from now, as you are Lawrence Of Arabia(1962). David Lean is top 5 movie maker of all time, please don't compare this to that, it's insulting a master.

So there is a guy whose only job is to keep the camera in focus? wow
I had no idea. I thought that was the cinematographer's job, amongst other things. Very interesting interview.

the focus person is part of the cinematography team and is as well a cinematographer. The Director of photography is the leader.

      camera department ranking.
      1st - director of photography
2nd - camera operator (sometimes the director of photography in witch case he's/she is then a cinematographer)
3rd- the 1st Assistant camera. who's role is usually focus pulling.
4th - 2nd assistant camera. main role slate, marking and so on.
      5th - camera trainee / loader.

Please include the questions as a voice in the future, having a minute and a half of text before there is an interview makes anyone trying to watch want to click away and same goes for during the interview. Otherwise the speaking part of the interview was great, including the interviewer? laughing.

We are having a conversation as opposed to standard stop and start interview. Plus, as you are not seeing the subjects, you do not see the physical gestures when one is at at a loss for thought or word or excited with the subject. Sorry if you don't like the format, but that's the format that it is.

      +Elias Entertainment -moviesharkdeblore-
You're cutting out your part of the conversation and replacing it with text. If it's a conversational interview that's fine, but this format makes it jarring. I'd consider making it a double sided conversation or if you want the text then keep it stop and start.

@@BehindTheLensOnline, Great content, but honestly the interviewer can engage in a convo without being recorded. This is proven by any good documentarist or TV and radio jorno on a daily basis- in fact, it's as simple as nodding, smiling, taking pauses instead of going: "Yeah!, "sure", "uhum", "oh myyyy God" and "hahahahhaha". I promise you, the interviewee will feel you are just as engaged. If you want to argue that it is a different style, you need to take it further. Present the interviewer, too. Give us a reason, you are as important as Chivo or your inputs are really needed. Cheers.
