How to add a Zipper to Leather!

  • Adding a zipper to leather (hand stitched). This piece will become the front section of the next Brando biker wallet (see link below). My good friend Zach Brown over at Zeebee Leather is always ribbing me about my dread of doing zippers in leather. If done well, it appears simple in the end, but the process to get there involves more than most realize. Here’s an example of what it takes to add a 5” zipper to leather. How do you like those pink scissors?

I've been quoted 50 bucks EACH to put in a zipper in my pair of 20 hole, knee high doc martens. I'm a proficient sewer. And I've been watching tons of videos on how to put zippers in boots. I don't have an industrial sewing machine. So I've been wracking my brain on how to do this myself.
    Then I found this video.
I am going to dye them black (they are sky blue) and attempt to put a zipper in. I will buy these tools and I bet it'll work a treat! I'll let you know! Thanks again!

I have been looking for a video on how to do this and loved yours. Quick, succinct and for those of us with ADHD, no distracting voices (also loved that a lot was in fast motion so I didn't get bored). Subscribing to your channel for sure, thanks!

Thanks!! Unfortunately, every one minute of finished video takes about 4-5 hours to film and edit. Seems seamless and quick, but it’s days. Sometimes a 15 second clip will take 3+ hours

I was really surprised to see you here coughing up all your secrets. Then again, your beyond competition at this point and probably have more work than you can handle. Can't tell ya how much I appreciate the time, effort, and info fella. Love the outlook.. No idea how you got your Chinese punches so sharp! Ps, double sided adhesive tape will keep that zipper in place until stitched ;)

Any chance we can get a saddle stitching tutorial? I know there are plenty of videos out there, but they all seem just a bit different.
    Awesome content as usual

Without instructions it's more an episode of Mr Rogers than an actual tutorial. Only they still explained a few things.

Jeffrey Joseph ha! That’s one of the tripod weights. Occasionally the camera rig is suspended off to a side... and the tripod needs weights to keep from tipping. That’s all.

Love your work! Am new to leather and am learning a lot from watching you. Question what tool is that you are using to remove the leather to thin it down. I have not seen that type of skiver if that’s what it is. Thanks for your time!

Alright...gotta ask...what are you using on your canvas to burnish your edges soooo beautifully? Your edge work is phenomenal!!!! I've used everything and am getting better, but yours seems to go on much easier. BTW...I hate zippers too!

Bruce West time. Patience. Canvas. Wood. And it’s always different depending on the leather.

Now THAT is a pricking iron! :)
I never knew the stitching holes got punched right through the zipper tape. I always thought it would tear.
Are there leather specific zippers, or can any zipper be used?

Fantastic, although it doesn't appear 'simple'....but your time in rank must be considered. I've done three zippers and suffered through them all.....git'in better, but not looking forward to #4... Thanks for sharing and I did learn some more. Anaco, Anz.

I show it in a lot of my videos. It only takes about 20 seconds. Do both sides of blade on canvas first. Flip and repeat on leather side.
