    Waiting for progress on the allotment, and then these videos pop up in my feed Approved. It's a cool and rainy day here today, so some inspiration for a sunny Sunday is very welcome You sure made friends with that Robin! I'll pop some bulbs into the grown tomorrow and fertilise well, so that they're better equipped for surviving the winter, and cut back my elder. It's struggling this year, lets hope a trim does the trick.

    Thanks for the video, well explained, what would your advice be on getting rid of alpine strawberries? I watched Gardeners World about 5 years ago and Monty planted some in his garden at longmeadow, well, I rushed out and bought 3 which have now colonized my whole border! No matter how much I try to dig them out and get rid of them, they keep coming back and multiplying! Yes it was fine for Monty to plant them in his 10 acre garden but in my small garden it is ridiculous lol, I have thought of placing cardboard then compost over them but they are in among other herbaceous plants which i love like the columbines and alliums, I am against using any chemicals so any advice would be great!

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399  Před 7 měsíci

      Thank you for the kind words. I’d try putting down cardboard and planting into compost on top of that. Lift out any perennials you want first and keep aside some columbine seeds too. Then just start again that way. Some might make it through but they’ll be weakened enough to make it a manageable task

    Great video! My experience with family when they ask for advice is that they usually balk when I tell them how many plants it takes to fill a space. But they are comparing their bald garden's to mine which I've been steadily filling for 20 years. I buy all my shrub's and trees in bulk bare root during the winter when they are cheap as chips, grow them in pots for a year or two then plant them out in the autumn when I've decided where I want them. I can also put the pots out to see if they like it. My acer's have been in 4 different spots in their pots until I found one they were happy in. I've still ordered another 70 plants from parkers wholesale to underplant my shrub's, seems a lot but they'll soon disappear. More plants is always the answer ☺️ Keep up the great work 👍

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399  Před rokem

      Patience pays off big time! Whenever I’ve bought bare root plants for jobs I’ve kept a few back in pots too and done the same. That along with stuff grown from seed and cuttings. It’s so uplifting hearing about what becomes a life’s work so thank you for sharing! Seeing things being brought on from being small is so satisfying isn’t it?

  • @BarriosGroupie
    @BarriosGroupie Před rokem +1

    I don't think you can go wrong with what you've done in that the bulbs are zero maintenance and the plants/shrubs/trees etc can be moved around in late autumn or even potted down the years. I'm adding bare root hawthorn and Pyracantha around the perimeter of my fencing to cover it up, having painted it dark brown and the posts a light grey which has had a huge positive effect upon the overall look so far.

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399  Před rokem

      Dark fence trick is such a good one for making it stand out less! There’s hawthorn in here too. Such an underrated ornamental plant and a heavy hitter for wildlife too 😁. There are loads of perennials in here too to bring the floral colour right into next autumn but they were all just stumps 😆

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399  Před 5 měsíci

      Certainly within the timeframe. It’ll be a long time before they reach maturity. And they’re among a fair few other tall trees anyway

    Like your video, inspiring! I have subscribed.
    By the way, have u ever pulled up a tree? I have an Amelanchier lamarckii as a birthday gift from my husband (centrepiece in my small garden) so I am loathed to get rid of it. But I’m thinking of it because it gets plenty of red-orange rust all over. It looks pathetic. And my biggest concern is, the rust might spread by winds, to nearby berries & other plants.
    I mean, in what circumstances, have u got rid of a tree for good… to make yr garden better, healthier or prettier?

    Maybe this is a stupid question but, since the RHS books are mainly UK focused would I have any use for them here in the U.S.? If not, do you have any recommendations for similar books more specific to North America which would be good for beginners/amateurs?
    Excited to see the updated garden in 9 months! 😃

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399  Před rokem +1

      It’s really not a stupid question. I don’t really have any experience with gardening in the US but it’s also more regionally specific than the U.K. RHS books are very much U.K. focused so they probably wouldn’t be that useful. I’ll ask some friends in North America if they have any recommendations 😊
