Neglected Allotment 4 Months Later. Bean Too Long
zhlédnutí 3,5KPřed 28 dny
The weather has been so odd this year. Everywhere in the world seems to have the wrong amount of water. Floods or drought and not much in between. A cold and wet start to June meant the slugs were eating everything! So I'm starting a lot of stuff again. How have your allotments/gardens been coming along? What's done well and what's been a struggle?

    I just use coffee filters with used ground grounds, Bermuda grass clippings (some completely dried out, some still freshly-cut green), torn up brown paper that typically comes in Amazon packages, maybe a small bowl of vegetable/fruit scraps, and that’s it. I do it in 5 gallon buckets that I drilled holes in. I already made 4 buckets worth of compost that I started back in May, and they’re just about ready to use. I have another one that I’m currently adding. I really believe our 100° weather and my frequent mixing has helped it all decompose so fast. Since I barely use any food in my compost, it hasn’t attracted any pests nor does it stink. I always have a bucket ready to continually add to.

There can also be other fluids and chemicals that end up in your cut materials, specially if it´s a gas mower. There is nothing wrong with manual mixing so why complicate it.

    You need to watch Douglas Tallamy. He has done decades of research on the exact topics you state for which there has been no research done(albeit in North America). Homegrown National Park is exactly about changing habitat for native fauna one garden at a time. But he also says that 70-80% native plantings is ok for this purpose and you can plant other species as long as they are not invasive to your region. As well, although pollinators and birds will use on-natives, they have different nutritional value. Our natives in the Great White North have higher fat content, etc for surviving extreme winters and for migration energy.

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399 Před 9 dny

      His research has been conducted outside of gardens but his advocacy is for native planting in gardens as far as I can tell? So the research across many normal home gardens is still in short supply. My problem with the “Plant Native” advocacy is that the evidence is always “X species relies on X native plant”. But the problem with that is that you can find many counter factual examples of “X native species relies on x alien plant”. So the relationship is more complex while the native advocates are essentially disguising their political polemic as science. In the case of Douglas Tallamy I can’t comment specifically and as far as I can see his impact seems positive. But I’m just a CZcamsr with a lay interest and so there are almost certainly gaping holes in anything I talk about on the matter. Thanks for pointing it out - someone else mentioned him to me before. I’ll go and have a much deeper look at what the research he’s done now with interest 😊

  • @eastcoast4233
    @eastcoast4233 Před 11 dny

    I don’t agree with this. It has too much human intervention, the bees need to be hardy enough under natural conditions to find a suitable home and stay there over winter without humans moving the wood inside. Doing that will foreseeably reduce the resilience of the bees.

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399 Před 9 dny

      But there’s already human intervention in ensuring they have reduced habitat. But I see your point to a degree. They’d normally find a hole in a tree which would be dry over the winter. You could just put a better roof on the big hotel and I imagine it might help. If it didn’t show from the video - it’s not my field of expertise. I’m just trying to go through the research available to make a best guess

    Plot looking excellent - the progress is so obvious from when you started to where you are now! I took over a neglected garden in much the same state (thankfully no mares-tail but essentially all brambles) and its easy to get drawn into the remaining negatives when youre looking at it day to day (ie the returning strongholds of weeds) but important to remind yourself where you started and where youve got to! Also your own plot always looks worse to you than it does to others I think…. Not an expert by any means but ive grown cardoons as ornamentals for the past three years and non have been under 5ft before flowering so id hazard a guess yours are chokes and hopefully just bulking up? 🤞🏻 Maybe part of it is also just trying to make things work to your schedule - maybe moving the tower into the shaded side of the shed and putting up a gutter or small container for drip irrigation might make it work better? Keep up the good work as its obviously paying off - makes me feel idle by comparison

    I'm a bit concerned about shop bought insect hotels. I found three dead bees in the packaging. How they got there I don't know. As they were in plastic bags and clearly had never been outside. The bamboo, drilled wooden dowels were clean not weathered. Fern cones might be the source, but if so could manufactures be actually harming bees in the process of making hotels like this?

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399 Před 12 dny

      I don’t really know enough about the specific situation to say but in general the manufacturers often employ style over substance. They want to sell the hotels so their appearance is much more important than their utility to the insects. I wonder if they were stored outside and the holes became inhabited and then they hatched? I’m completely guessing here

Anyone can grow a few pots for not much money. I'm lucky, I have space for a large garden, and while it does come with some costs, I manage to do it on a pretty good budget. Tonight's meal was provided from the garden. Cabbage, onion, garlic, potatoes and peppers. I did have to buy the sausages, but that meant that tonight's dinner for three cost me less than $6 CAD and there's leftovers for lunch tomorrow.
