    One factor that comes to my mind: sprinkler heads that are close to the sidewalk. I have one yard I typically blade edge but I’ve got to be careful because several sprinkler heads are close to the sidewalk and if I’m not paying attention the blade will run into them. I’ve broken one before doing that. The string doesn’t cause issues with them though.

    The long held debate , seeing this 4 years later of course . The string trimmer is great for edges that aren’t very deep if you have more then 1 inch of overlay on a sidewalk the string trimmer won’t cut through the over lay of sod but other then that it definitely saves a trip back to the truck!

    I don't charge to maintain an edge and I use the string trimmer to do so. If I'm creating a new edge I do charge for that ($0.65/ft) as a one-time service and I use an edger for this.

  • @rogermurph101
    @rogermurph101 Před 3 lety +9

    Edger is superior every time. The edger will give a consistent line week after week, month after month. A string trimmer, even if you’re “the best”, is subject to a line that gets wider and wider over time, and ends up looking like the lawn is dying next to the concrete. The edger is just better. That golden edge thing is completely subjective. I don’t like the edge being that wide. And it throws up a lot of debris. A LOT. Enough to get all over a house if you use it close to the building. No thanks.

    • @tommyboi76
      @tommyboi76 Před 2 lety

      My line never gets to wide with a string. However, I've seen it happen. I can't argue the consistent cut an edger gives, however, if you're only cutting your own lawn and you don't wanna spend extra money for an edger you can certainly get a clean look with a string trimmer if you know how to use one.

  • @PatrickGuerrisi

    In my opinion the blade trimmer does a better job but especially as Professionals not every job is the same. You might have sprinkler systems running against the edge of the gutter or foot paths which means you can't use a blade. You might have garden edges with no hard surfaces which don't allow you to run the blade along them. So yeah. The blade looks better but when you're on the job it may not be practical and it's a pain in the butt getting it out when you could do the whole job in about 5-10 minutes with a line trimmer and after a bit of practice you can do a pretty good job with it. Plus it's just another machine that you have to have floating around in your setup.

  • @lloydpgulston3041

    string side looked better. Not sure if this is a good way to test these two devices. For starters, one side looks like has more grass than the other. Therefore, any gaps in the grass would not look as straight as the side that has the most grass. Not sure how you can tell which would look this best then. However, I think the string side looks better to me.

    I have a question. On my driveway, the grass grows right up to the concrete touching it and even growing over the edge of the concrete a little.
    I would think that if I use a blade edger it couldn’t get the little bit of grass along the driveway that touches the concrete. I couldn’t of course use a metal blade to cut that remaining grass or it would scrape on the concrete.

      A blade edger will absolutely cut the grass right up to the concrete. If your concrete is 3 or 4 inches above the concrete I might worry about scratching it, but otherwise I would just run the edger right along that edge. That is what an edger is made for.

    What is the golden edge?

    • @LansingLawnServiceLLC
      @LansingLawnServiceLLC  Před rokem +1

      It is a special edger blade that cuts an edge 1/2 an inch wide. Some people like it. The best use for it is to cut overgrown edges. They are pretty impressive.

    The reason it took longer on the string is because u walk backward. String is a lot better cause u can flat top corner and around trees without wasting time running back and forth to ur trailer...

  • @dochort21
    @dochort21 Před 4 lety +1

    Edger is faster, better quality, and more consistent, regardless of user experience and skill level. The fact that I can put a relatively untrained person on an edger makes it worth carrying the extra piece of equipment. "Trained" personnel at my university leave a edge width of 1" or more because they lack the skill to edge with a string trimmer.

    • @LansingLawnServiceLLC
      @LansingLawnServiceLLC  Před 4 lety

      dochort21 I agree. I am a solo operator and I thought that having to switch to another piece of equipment would take longer, but in reality it is faster to use the edger and like you said it looks better. Also, the edge doesn’t get opened up over time like it does with a weedeater.

    So I've got tall grass that's right up to the edge of a deck fascia board. Would using a string trimmer be able to trim the grass without damaging the deck fascia board.. ? Or do I need another type of edging tool?

    • @LansingLawnServiceLLC
      @LansingLawnServiceLLC  Před 2 lety

      What I would do is flip edge next to the fascia board just like you saw me edging the sidewalk with the string trimmer. You can do that or you can spray weed and grass killer along the fascia board so that you are sure to not damage it.

      I agree, that over time you can make 1/2 in. edges, however I do not feel that they look as good. A string trimmer gives the groove a more rounded look where the blade looks like it was cut with a knife. What brand of string trimmer do you use?

    My issue is one of simple cost:benefit.
    I'm guessing the edger is probably pushing $300...the only use is for my sidewalk. My trimmer, on the other hand, does my sidewalk and driveway edging, the base of my 24 landscape shrubs, and the base of my dog's corral fencing. The difference in comparative quality, IF ANY...certainly doesn't justify keeping a $300 tool in the garage for 45 seconds of work each week....

    Can you use an edger with grass growing between concrete?

    • @LansingLawnServiceLLC
      @LansingLawnServiceLLC  Před 4 lety +3

      Jamie I wouldn’t. You run the risk of damaging the concrete and opening the gap in the concrete allowing more weeds or grass to grow there. I would get a weed and grass killer from Home Depot or some place similar and spray that in the crack. It will kill what is in there and keep it killed for at least six weeks. If you were to use and edger or string trimmer you would have to do it every week.
