What is now Greenwood Cemetery, in Decatur, Illinois, was first used as sacred burial grounds by Native Americans of the Illiniwek Confederation hundreds of years before any Europeans lived there. It is one of the most haunted places on Earth. Its dark and sordid history has helped make it one of the most infamous burial sites on the planet. But what did this humble boneyard do to earn such a spooky reputation?

I spent my childhood, teenage years and part of my adult life(no longer living there)in Decatur, IL and have spent so much of my time in Greenwood. You left out so much!!! The forest around Greenwood is called Hell's Hallow and also plays a part in the hauntings. There are tunnels that run under the cemetery as well, old coal mines I believe. Many graves have sunken and fallen into these tunnels. There are even rumors of secret entrances to these tunnels. I spent many nights as a teen there looking for tunnels and ghosts. It truly is a spooky place.
While walking through some spots of the cemetery at night the hairs on your neck and body will stand on end in an instant. Decatur has a rich history until around the 1930's to 1940s. The city itself is in a sad, slow decline. Hell's Hallow has been gutted to make a road, park and room for more homes. There are many hauntings in this city, there are even some books written by a local author called Haunted Decatur by Troy Taylor. He has a series of Haunted books from around central IL.
On the far north edge of the city which is technically Forsyth, IL there is a neat place called the Old Book Barn. Check it out! If you do pass through, please be respectful. The people for the most part are nice, humble, friendly and will tell you all kinds of local stories. Thanks for the touch of home, I really needed this.

@@bdcarlitosway When it's nighttime, foggy the imagination can run wild. You think you might have seen something, you may have heard something but you DEFINITELY felt something. There are parts that cause fear and dread. The hands and knees shake. The whole body trembles really. The feeling is "No no, this isn't right. This is dangerous."
We owned a house not to far from Greenwood that was about 100 years old. It had a creepy old wooden root cellar in the basement that gave it a creepy dark dungeon look and feel. One night the power goes out, the mother in law and wife come downstairs to see what was going on. I was already working in the basement. My mother in law who doesn't speak english stood next to me and my wife (MY WIFE! 👍) stood behind her.
I asked my wife to translate the situation to her mother. My wife stood there in silence behind her mom and wouldn't answer me, wouldn't translate. I could see her silhouette perfectly with the little little coming from the backdoor window shining down the stairs.
I got rather annoyed asking over and over to translate. Her mom kept asking what was wrong. When the power came back I flipping on the breaker. It was just my mother in law and I in the basement. No wife. She was so close I could have touched her. My wife had been outside the entire time with the dogs. They both still think I'm crazy but I know what I saw! Sorry for being long winded!

I've always loved exploring cemeteries, they incorporate history, art, and love all in one peaceful spot. During the lockdown every time I got cabin fever I'd take what I called a Cemetery Tour, pack up the truck with my camping gear and a map of old cemeteries and spend a few days enjoying some excellent social distancing. Added plus, when public bathrooms were closed nearly everywhere you could usually count on the facilities at a cemetery to still be available.

Due to vandalism (why do cretins do this?), passage of time and other natural occurrences the cemetery fell into sad disrepair. The community and service organizations banded together and cleaned, scrubbed, realigned, repaired tomb and gravestones. The cemetery is beautiful and well protected by police surveillance and CCTV coverage. Your actions are admirable and should serve as example for others. God bless.

This reminds me of my encounter with a spirit. I was at boarding school for my high school years, didn't much enjoy the place but I wasn't allowed to drop out. One night, I saw a weird flash of light on my door, figured it was probably one of the night security guards making sure no one was prowling around. Every night it would be there, sometimes bigger and sometimes smaller. Over about a month, the random flickers developed into a human form.
A young looking man, with patched and ragged clothes. Every night, he'd appear and point out through the windows, towards the bushland that bordered the school grounds. Occasionally he'd appear with a bridle in his hand or a saddle at his feet, so I figured he was some old farmhand from back in the days when the school grounds were farmlands. I started exploring out in the bushlands, careful not to let the teachers or staff spot me since I wasn't meant to be out there.
It must have taken me three or four months before I found a broken headstone mostly buried in mud and leaves. Turned out he wasn't a local farmhand, but a drover from the far north who had gotten ill on a long ride and died at an overnight camp right near where he'd been buried. Over time, he'd been forgotten by locals and his final resting place was left abandoned by everyone. The next chance I had to get into town, I went straight to the local historical society with my information and the sketches I'd done of the stone and surrounds.
Last time I was back there, his final resting place had been completely repaired, replanted and rededicated to his memory. The school went to the expense of having a proper access road put in so local history buffs and anyone else who wanted to could get out and see his grave without having to scramble through untamed bushlands.

I''m from Decatur. I used to roam this cemetary when I was a teenager. Yeah, it's spooky. The stories we always heard were the bad people would murder their victims there (or elsewhere) and stuff the bodies in the slots in the mausoleums. Every now and then, we would find an unlocked mausoleum. That was always a fun time.
Also, regarding the pact with the devil thing. We always heard that could be done behind the cemetary on a road that ran through the woods bordering the property. The woods were called Hell's Hallow. Go to the road at midnight and the devil will show up.

It was about three miles from his farm to my home in town. I usually took a shortcut through the city cemetary to town. That night as I came up out of the ditch and my headlight hit the cemetary there must have been about fifty jackrabbits in the cemetary. They panicked and they fled, dodging the tombstones as the light swept over them. I've never seen anything so terrifying in my life. I had to stop my sled and let my heart slow down before I continued on. In my defense we had been watching old Kolchak reruns and drinking beer.

Reminds me of a cemetery in Nebraska that is now closed to the public because of all the sinister stories attached to the cemetery. You have to get special city permission to even set foot in the cemetery.

Apparently there is a demonic portal or spirit in the cemetery that can follow people home if you look in the mirrors as you drive past or leave the cemetery and cause harm or even death. It's called Ball cemetery in Springfield Nebraska.
But there's just a bunch of different legends surrounding it since it's a really old cemetery.

@@debbiebrantley61 somewhere in southern Nebraska there's a road called seven sisters hill that leads to an abandoned cemetery in a grove of trees that has a demonic portal there. The legend of the road is a dad was possessed by a demon and hung each one of his daughters on all seven hills before taking his own life.

At Port Arthur, Tasmania, - used as a jail for secondary punishment for convicts during the early 19th century - resides the Chaplains House. It’s reportedly on the top 10 of haunted residence’s in the world. Furthermore, the Model prison at Port Arthur (solitary confinement) is supposed to be haunted as well. There are ghost tours at the site. I’ve been inside the Chaplains house during the day, and could only stay in there for no more than 2 minutes. I felt the presence of pure evil. I’d hate to stay there at night. The Chaplin died in the upper room. He was so grossly overweight he had to be lowered through the top window because they couldn’t get him out of his room. He’s buried on the Island of the Dead, a little way out from Port Arthur.

I would love to visit that hemisphere but after watching Scotty's Australia Dash Cam videos I would be frightened to leave the airport, Ha Ha,,, Honestly, Tasmania, New Zealand, Australia are beautifully brilliant lands with all kinds of mysteries mixed into their earliest histories.
