According to their website the Polyurethane varnish from Vallejo needs 24h even between layers to dry, and 2 layers would be enough. And it shouldnt need to be thinned with 0.5 (as they say).
Vallejo one also comes in bigger bottles too
As a figure painter who absolutely adores a good flat finish for photography especially, I haven't found anything that gets even close to AK Ultra Matte

Thanks for the vid Robert. Not so sure that "Ultra" matte is any flatter than just normal matte but IMO the AK wins. I like that red you are working on . At 17:00 in the vid it looks quite like a favourite Nissan colour Katsuma Orange. Don't get stuck in the snow

Would have liked to see some durability tests. The AK I can almost rub off with my fingers sometimes, which doesn’t help people who play games with their models. I can’t get varnishes to spray well as a smooth finishing coat for some reason, so brush instead.

Great comparison for an acrylic matte. I am a oil based paint/flat type of modeler, but as per your usual, you opened my eyes to yet another product to try. Thank you for doing this test for all of us out here.

I am a typical Vallejo user and happy to see the poly line for matte coat. It really looked good in your test run. I have been using Createx Matte and Gloss for various use and I am just not always happy with it. Thanks again, and rock on....

IMHO I would say the AK edged out over the Vallejo(rarely do I find myself saying that😅). My experiences with Vallejo varnishes have been mixed.

Informative test. I don't normally use a matte much, however, now I am building some of my aircraft kits, I think those could be very useful. I did try some Mod Podge matte tonite and was very happy with the results. I brushed on a medium coat and after it dried, I was impressed at how well it dulled the paint. I brushed it over Colorshots Gloss Yellow, and wow was it matte. Maybe that could be another test ( the Mod Podge series) sometime in the future. I am curious how well it can be sprayed thru an airbrush.
Another great video! I've had AK ultra varnish gloss (same bottle) for a while, tried to spray it few times and it drove me mad, always separated into drops in surface. I just gave up on it. Vallejo on the other hand is the same as that polyurethane you tested a while ago- it was test which gloss varnish doesn't dull chrome paint. For polyurethane varnishes they recommend thinning with their airbrush thinner 50/50 mix, so that should work, it is the same one, listed in same type of varnish on their website, just smaller bottle, and probably higher cost per ml :). I personally think there's a huge difference between these two. The AK Ultra Matt is significantly better at being a true matte finish, whereas the Vallejo retains their long-standing issue of their matte paints and varnish being a little more satin than their competitors. More matte than they used to be, though, so I'll give them that.

I think you will enjoy it. I am a long time Iwata fangirl, and I have to say, I'm really liking my Swallowtail. I got the fan cap too, very nice with the large models I paint.
I love Vallejo Polyurethane as a protective coat while painting. Once it cures, it takes a lot to rub it off even with vallejo thinner, so while painting if I make a mistake, I can confidently just rub it off using thinner and the prior paint layer will remain safe. It thins with vallejo thinner, so it's not a permanent layer and you can rub it off and the paint layer underneath if you're not careful.
Also, for a couple dollars more than the 60ml AK, you get a 200ml bottle of Vallejo which is the best value by far.
Got an idea for you, gonna try it myself. Prime some labels or stickers in 2 or 3 colors. Then paint on the color of the bottle or jar it will be going on. Saving space and giving an idea of how it will look at a glance.
That blue color is perfect for a Freedom Gundam.
I woundering how this would look over plain plastic. Cause with my really old models that need painting, the newer models don't "need" to be painted.

Pretty impressive for vallejo to get a near great result The ultra matt varnish obviously ak ultra matt is on top still, but honestly i can now buy either knowing im knocking back that sheen, great video as always bud

AK is the winner that's my opinion.
I use both AK and Vallejo varnishes and I prefer the Vallejo Mecha varnishes. Even more matt and easier to spray than AK imho.
Yeah spaz stix black backer and silver backer and I had to right on each of them as they did the same thing
What better for vallejo, is available in my country. because i dont know how paint shipping as it categorized as "liquid", the customs and taxes, made it so much harder to just buy a few paint overseas.

I've only used the Vallejo one as brush on, it doesn't give me an ultramatt finish compared to something like GreenStuffWorld's, but it's way more durable even with one coat, and still a nice matt varnish if nothing else. Also levels pretty good, but gets tacky quite quickly.
Try using a hair drier on those labels to soften the adhesive…then try peeling them off. Some labels need just a moment of heat and others have to get quite hot before peeling! Occasionally this doesn’t work, it depends on the adhesive and how long it has been in place.
I assume the new line of paints you're working on are enamel/lacquer instead of acrylic? Both the red and that blue-black were nice looking.
You need to do a scratch test. Spraying flat directly on paint actually make the paint easier to scratch. On gundams its a big deal. Thats why its best to spray a gloss coat first to protect the paint. Gloss adds the best protection. Id like to see a scratch test without a gloss coat.
Do you know of any videos where they do that? Things like scratching or spilling things on top of the varnished, cured piece and showing how well it resists staining?

Ammo also do an ultra matt that works well. I tried the Vallejo but way too long to dry.
Those labels over labels were no accident, thats an upset worker.

The Vallejo looks like a satin finish on the gloss. It dulls down with a little shine after drying.
I'm using vallejo ultra matte and I love it. but the vallejo's gloss is not that glossy.
I thin it using vallejo thinner and they worked well.
I would like to see what clears other than 2k will work over createx candy 2.0
Looks like the Ak tends to whiten out the colour a lot less than the Vallejo one..
Have you tried mixing the Vallejo and AK ultra matte varnishes? I've been using a 1-to-1 mix on some of my minis, and it goes on really smooth, but I'm a little paranoid about mixing acrylic and polyurethane varnish

How do both varnishes do on bare plastic? I want to put decals down on a few bare kits, but it's too cold this time of year for rattle cans
I have honestly stopped using any varnish at all... it just ends up ruining paintjobs and results I enjoy, and I have rubbed the living HECK out of acryllic paint trying to get it to come off some 40k figures and it won't budge. Even scrapign it with an exacto takes a little bit of work so I've stopped varnishing anything that's not Metal... Resin seems to hold pretty decent even, though I am kinda tempted to varnish them just incase. I've seen some paint flakin goff FW resin, but, I never cleaned them off before painting them haha. Istripped and am repainting them now.
Vallejo Air Brush thinner to thin any Vallejo product.
I like the flatness of the AK but I only use it in places where it won't get much handling. It's fragile and will rub off with your fingers.
Good Review. What did you use for your final clean out with the Vallejo? I mean when you were finished airbrushing. Also, what should you use to clean out acrylic alcohol with?
I use hot water brewed from my coffee maker. You can use rubbing alcohol to clean alcohol based acrylics but not for Vallejo

I am having a hard time mixing Mr.Clear Color GX 105 Clear Pink……for some odd reason its not mixing well with the thinner (the paint tends to clump together no matter what type of thinner I use) I could really use some assistance, please!!!!

I believe i saw a couple of ways to replicate gaia prism blue black. The first comes from createx's CZcams channel, a video called murdered candy. The second comes from a short. Add 20% gloss black to Mr. Crystal saphire blue. When I rebuild my airbrushing area, i will give them a go myself. Anyone else want to give it a whirl?

I worked on a model for weeks GW spray ruined it for me, does AK fuzz up ?
Not sure what fuzzed up means but keep in mind the GW is one of the worst clears I've ever used
Can u test these varnish with Musou Black paint?
Someone tested that and it made the black less matte. It didn't work
@@barbatosrex9473I had a special varnish made for musou black, but I still could not achieve the result I wanted. There is no brightness, but the black color turns to gray. I think there must be a solution to this.

Well I would stsrt with metal. Primer by Mr Color or Tamiya.
I've read and seen good things about both primers, I'm a little stuck on what to use for the "engine" black. My father used to use flo-quil but now that they are out of business we haven't painted a lot. Recently, we have been trying to figure out how to weather with acrylics so that is the only exposed we have to them. They are sort of a new beast for us. Would a laqucer paint like Mr Color or Tamiya or acrylic like Vallejo be better than the other particularly for brass? @@barbatosrex9473

AK seems way more flat than matte. Is it bad? No...but the Vallejo is definitely matte Vs flat.
