- Do you remember the California Raisins? Back in the ‘80s they were a media phenomenon. Appearing in commercials, movies, cartoons, t-shirts, bed sheets, Halloween costumes, lunch boxes, toilet paper, and even had their own studio albums. They were a viral phenomenon before the term ‘viral’ even existed.
If you weren't alive in the 80s, three decades later you've still most certainly heard about them.
How did a bunch of humble, dried grapes remarkably ascend from advertising mascots to pop culture icons? And why did they disappear as quickly as they came?
This is the story of the California Raisins. - Zábava
I had the California Raisin bedsheets as a kid! I felt so cool sleeping in those.
80s babies stand up 82' ❤
You amount of dedication to restoring lost media is amazing.
I recently picked up a set of four of those Hardee's California Raisins figures in an antique store in Massachusetts.
Great video! Also, people thought they were falling in love with the raisins, but the reality is they just missed hearing the Motown sound. The raisins would never have taken off if they hadn’t been subconsciously associated with the temptations and other groups of the Motown era.
You mentioned it being rare that a mascot becomes bigger than its parent brand. I think another example of that is Ernest, who was a mascot for Pepsi's Mountain Dew soda, and ended up spawning, if I recall correctly, at least 4 movies.
Will Vinton (the dude that invented the California Raisins and The Yo Noid) was from my home state of Oregon
Truly appreciate the work you put into this! The nostalgia it brought up was amazing. I cannot wait to see what else you will share!
CLAYMATION is an incredibly cool art form. Will Vinton: an incredible genius of an artist.
This is band is cool😊😊😊😊
You left out the HUGE success of "The Big Chill" film in 1983 ~ U. of Michigan reunion of now adult friends - a comedy/drama that got raving revues: Tom Berenger, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, William Hurt, Kevin Kline, Mary Kay Place, Meg Tilly, & JoBeth Williams. Motown music played ALL through the film, including "Heard it from the Grapevine". Sunmaid ROCKS
You have a great channel, you deserve way more subscribers than you have
I was just thinking that!
Thanks for this. I had the honor of going into the studio to “clean up” vocals on the Claymation Christmas album. I never got My promo copy- it would be great to have one!😊
well I certainly hope you're not asking *me!* 😆😆😆
Oh - no Man! I’ll have to pay and arm and a leg on eBay…😂
Came here just to recognize your great work, editing and informationr of your Fudge Video...man, i do think that everyone forgot that show, it was priceless!!. Around 10 years ago all season 1 and some of the season 2 episodes were on Hulu, but not anymore...it's a shame...Keep up the good work! :)
Thank you for your kind words! I actually didn’t realize that about Hulu. I had to resort to purchasing VHS tapes off of ebay to collect enough footage to make this episode. It really blows my mind that it’s become lost media.
Criminally underrated video... Fabulous work👍🏾💯
Incredible video, thank you so much! ❤️
What a lovely tribute to Vinton using some well-chosen clips from Claydream!!! Living in Portland I've been lucky enough to meet a handful of people who worked with Vinton in the past, it's clear he was an inspiration to many, someone said his greatest talent was bringing together all the most talented people in one place and somehow making it work. I'd recommend the documentary to anyone reading this who's interested in Claymation! And also I'm not ashamed to admit I own those bedsheets.
Loved this video, would love to see more rise and fall content! Came through the King Koopa's Kool Kartoons video and would also love video game related content like that :)
Damn good video. Bravo!
Very good video, well researched. Count me among your new subscribers.
Welcome to our small family of ‘80s and ‘90s antiquated media buffs! I don’t have any welcome gifts but here’s a cookie! 🍪
The California raisins is my favorite
I used to own a VHS copy of The Raisins Sold Out. That was what introduced me to claymation.
Sadly, it seems (at least to me) that claymation is a dying art.
You're definitely getting the Featured Channel treatment.
I have a feeling that if these commercials aired today, some people would lose their sh*t over it.
Great video, well done.
Will Vinton made them!
YES! 16:10
Love the blackies rasins
Dark story behind them
