Hey guys! We are back on Enigma's Cold War Server this time in the Mi-8 Hip. I haven't flown this for years and I'm basically relearning everything all over again. In this video we'll do a couple of troop landings while we feel out the helicopter and ultimately we're going to suffer a crazy failure induced by some enemy fire sustained in our final troop landing. Thanks for watching! - Hry
engine failure: 50 caliber bullets in engine
corrective action: Don't get shot by 50 caliber rounds to the engine
Haha I’ll shoot for that next time thanks!
Every Hip pilots worst fear at 10:25 when the fan turns off you know everything is broke! Great video.
That really made me lol because it’s so true haha
Thank you!
@@ryu1940 I'm getting better at dealing with it. The worst part is having to reset your stabilization system which the flight engineer would normally do but for the pilot requires looking down. I've mapped the yaw and pitch/roll stabilizer buttons so I can be quick about it now. (Oooh, think I just came up with another use for Voice Attack! As another crew person would do that, I don't mind commanding it with my voice. There's no way I'll ever use VA to command stuff the pilot would do with his own hands though as that's unrealistic.)
@@AdmiralQuality I believe there is a special option for the Mi-8 that helps. I forgot specifically which option it is but it makes the flight engineer more automatically proactive about keeping it on. It seems to work. It’s not 100% perfect so I do what you did also and map it.
@@ryu1940 Really? I'm pretty familiar with its Special Menu and don't remember anything like that. Where!?! :o
@@AdmiralQuality I think it’s called autopilot adjustment. The third option box in the special menu for it. Described in this video:

Imagine being that Huey Pilot, working hard to take down that Hind...only to be kamikazeed by a Mig to the face
From underneath no less lol
Mi-8 is pretty cool, always wish more people would fly it.
Great video as always!
Thank you! Yeah I feel the same. Hopefully the new transport mechanics coming for the helicopters will encourage more to fly it when it gets reintroduced. I’ll definitely make a video on it when that happens to hopefully get people pumped to try it out!
It's hard to take up something you've flown for years when you have a brand new Hind begging for attention
I would LOVE a heavy lift helicopter. There are tons of great options.
CH47 Chinook
CH53 Stallion
CH54 Tarhe
Mi-6 Hook
Etc.
Other, non-heavy lift helicopters that would be interesting a different, like the Westland Sea King, would be cool as well. Then we’d have our first aircraft to go with the Falklands map. 💀
Were getting a full fidelity Chinook in 2023 my dude
Great content and film production. Loving the heli gameplay on Enigma's server. I'm pretty jelly of your graphics quality aye. Looks great.
Thanks man! Yeah I love the helicopter gameplay on the server too! I’m so glad they added troop insertions and csar stuff it really changed the dynamic for the whole rotary wing side of the game.
Just did a trial of the hip and I must say the view in the cockpit is amazing. I will definitively get this on the next sale. Only thing is the scary amount of buttons just like the hind :)
your an amazing pilot dude, I could never hover any heli like that for my life.
Thanks man! For a while I was flying the Hornet and Tomcat but recently it’s been strictly helicopters so I’m glad it looks like I’m flying smooth.
Awesome vid
Thank you!
@@ryu1940 no problem 😊
Dude I love the style of your videos. PLEASE keep them coming. So informative.
Thanks man! I’m glad you’re enjoying them!
Love the Hip. Great video! Cheers!
Thank you! I love it too! I was just flying it earlier today after a very long hiatus. It was very nice.
Great video, really well put together. 👍
Thank you I appreciate that !
Love to see some love towards HELI's in Dcs,enough with all those fighter vs fighter pvp. I think i will join this server soon.
Helicopters in DCS on servers like this one are definitely worthy of some love!
I've been enjoying the content/voice overs lately. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!
Love your story telling
Thank you! I'm glad to hear you enjoy it!
Just came across your channel after jumping into Enigma’s headfirst. The quality of your videos is outstanding and you quickly earned a new sub. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! I appreciate the comment! Hope to see ya out there sometime!
Thanks some excellent content, Ryu! Great work!
Thank you!
Amazing presentation and production!
Thank you!
that's an amazing story report. Hope to see you on the server in the future :D
Thank you!
Great job! keep it up!
Thank you!
People really need to take 2 hours and learn how to fly the hind instead of just winging it. Speed is the name of the game. Turn with the anti-torque pedals, not the cyclic. Use a trim hat for small corrections. When you try to control her like a Huey as in this video, it looks ridiculous.
Epic video nonetheless. Love the content!
Your video is so relaxing man
Thank you !
Hope the hind get to hip modeling level, excellent videos by the way.
Thank you very much and I totally agree! I hope the Hind gets to the same excellent level as the Hip!
My favorite utility helicopter; fast, powerful, nimble, stable, robust, redundant and great payload!
It’s a great all around helicopter. There’s certainly some compromises in some areas but overall I have to say I love it’s speed and power. It really shines on this server!
For Enigma's server, is there any advantage to taking out the Hip over the Hind?
@@SmokinKipper the major one is now with the new troop mechanic, you can land once And kill 6 enemy units all at the same time ( after 3 min ). With a Hind that may take a couple of passes to achieve the same amount of kills and the Hind is valued higher in the attrition score so if you get shot down it hurts your side more in the Hind over the Hip.
@@ryu1940 I thought the troops limit was standardised for all helos. Maybe they refined the mechanic some more.
@@SmokinKipper yes it’s been changed. Hinds cannot drop troops (a while ago they were allowed to drop one squad but it was too overpowered). Hips and Hueys can drop two squads each which is how it was before but instead of killing two units each with a squad, the kills were upped to three units per squad. The caveat is now you must drop troops within 3km of an enemy ground encampment. The ground troops you land will then only kill things in that nearby camp. Before this was completely random. With the old way, you could have landed troops anywhere in the enemy sector and you would get 4 random kills across the frontline sector. Now it’s very targeted and takes deliberate landing zones to clear out enemies using the troop drops.
Great video! Great narration! Do you do the recording afterwards using the recording files? I really liked the combination of narration, explanation of what went on and what you thought went on and the mission it self. Well done!
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Yea I film first person perspectives live and after the mission is complete I will go and pull the track file and record off of it to get the different angles. It’s pretty time consuming given that in DCS we get no rewind features for replay so it’s good to hear when people enjoy the content!
@@ryu1940 Thanks for clarifying. Yeah it's very time consuming without a rewind button, been uploading some my self and want to do something like this so had to ask some good advice 🙂
Thanks for sharing your process, now I know my idea is on the right track 🙂
Keep em coming, like I said, I really enjoyed it!
man… this is when enigmas was fun ;-;
You can always do a sideways "ski stop" flare as works so well in the Huey. That will prevent your boom from striking. But as with everything Hip, do it in slow motion compared to the Huey.
Yeah that really is useful in the Huey. I think I’ll probably spend some time offline to try some aggressive decelerating and see what I can get away with. I’m sure I’ll be crashing a lot.
@@ryu1940 I also do spiral landings a lot in the Hip when I see I'm going to overshoot. Also a great technique for autorotations when you're going to overshoot your landing zone.
@@AdmiralQuality yeah sometimes I find myself doing that at the farp if I misjudge the deceleration. It’s a good safe way to slow and descend but I’ve been leery about doing that over the front in enemy territory because if you’re starting that with any sort of altitude, someone is likely to spot you.
Hitting the emergency stop on one engine might have helped cut your power enough to decelerate. Obviously if that one remaining engine goes.... things get worse when you've pulled the stop.
By the way, I'm not sure where it is offhand, but if it's anything like the Huey there should be a way to override the governor and control the engine power manually with switches on the collective.
I wonder if we can script these failures to practice our emergency procedures. Will look into that...
I think they could be scripted some how. I think some of the Mi-8 campaigns have scripted failures in some of the missions. I think you’re right about a governor override like the Huey. I think I briefly saw something about that in the manual.
@@ryu1940 There's a section in the ME for failures, I just need to go through it and see if the governor is in there. Then I need to map and get used to learning the throttle advance/retard switches in both choppers. (I did a bit of it in the Huey way, way back but haven't practiced in a long time. It would have been something else to have been a Bell 47 pilot with no governor to help you!)
#crazyrussianpilot :-> Top Video !👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
@@ryu1940 Grand Mercy for subscrib 👍👍👍👍👍
I know this is an old video, but I wanted to ask how did you get the side gunners to be on the Hip but NOT the external hardpoints? Is this an Enigma's cold war server thing only or something special you have to do to get this to set up? If I try to load a mission to test out this flight profile, I can't assign door gunners without external hardpoints, even in the mission the ground crew will just say it's not possible. Any advice?
Hmm that is strange. If you want to remove pylons you need to go to the arming panel in game and then right click on a hard point and I believe it says remove pylon. You’ll see X marks all over the hard points and you’ll also lose your gunsight in the cockpit if the pylons are removed correctly. Good luck!
@@ryu1940 Will test this, thank you.
Do you hold the trimmer when making moving the cyclic?
I do not. If I want to trim hold I’ll will hold the cyclic in a certain spot then hit the force trim button. The way I have it set up in the special options means I have to bring my cyclic and anti torque positions to center before the helicopter will respond to anymore inputs. Before I come in for landing I will release the force trim and hand fly it unassisted by trim all the way to touchdown.
I was wondering, I know in most helicopters you'll hold the trimmer when manipulating the cyclic so you're not working against the AFCS, SCAS, and more of those "behind the scenes" stuff@@ryu1940
@@clutchtucker ah yeah I’m not sure how it is in real life but in DCS many helicopters have trimmer settings you can tailor to how you want to use because of the varying hardware set ups users have. For instance many of us have centering springs on our joysticks which do not operate the way a cyclic would. In that case I find it preferable to have the trim hold position til my stick is back to center before accepting any other inputs.
Yeah, I have springs for my joystick too. I've rocked the instant trimmer for quite some time until now when I changed it to the centering one@@ryu1940
how does one know where to make the troop landings? it said i need to be at a base
You load troops at your FARP where you spawn in at. You then need to find ground targets on the enemy side and land within 1.5km of them with the new rules.
how do you get a track of the flight on a server?
There should be a folder within the tracks folder called mp tracks or something to that effect.
How did you record woth external views?!?!?
You have to change the mission options by loading the track file in the mission editor and then re-save it as a track file then when you open it in the replay viewer you’ll have the external view.
@@ryu1940 if I do it this way, does the replay captures the entire server campaign? Or just your own replay?
What I mean is... It doesnt capture the whole 4 hour replay campaign right?
@@ErnestIsGaming it will record and stop only for the duration of your session. So if you log in and do two sorties then log off it’ll have one track file which will include both flights. If you log in at the start of the server and log off when it resets after 4 hours it’ll have all four hours of the track. It’s tied to you logging in or logging off is all.
@@ryu1940 thanks for your time man
@@ErnestIsGaming No problem man !
How do you get a track to edit in mp?
Change the .trk to a .miz by renaming it and then open it in the mission editor. Change the mission options to allow external views and then save. Make it into a .trk again and open the replay. Should have external views.
@@ryu1940 clever! Thanks
How do you save the track file though after a mp mission it doesn't give you the option to save a track.
@@chadvader974 It’s always saved automatically. I don’t remember the path but it’s wherever your single player track files are saved. Inside that folder there is a folder that is called multiplayer or something to that effect and all your multiplayer tracks are saved in there.
how are you able to remove the hardpoints?
Iirc you click the hard point location on the weapons set up and then an x will appear over it. Have the ground crew apply the changes and it’ll show up as removed.
@@ryu1940 Thank you.
@@RooT9663 no problem! I hope that worked. It’s been a while since I’ve flown in it so my memory may be foggy.
