"Idiocracy" was a genius piece of filming. Never before and never again will a movie comedy NAIL current and future societal trends as dead on as this.
It's a great, hilarious movie, but if you look around yourself, it's really not that hard to notice a downward spiral, and it wasn't different back then either. We've been getting dumber and lazier for a long time now. Like they said, the script actually missed some of the biggest, most significant changes in society, like social media and cancel culture. At its core it basically comes down to "dumb people breed, smart people don't", which is obviously true, but it's not a mind-blowing revelation.
Devo nailed it way before and way better than Idiocracy. I love Mike Judge -- he distributed a film of mine when no one was interested -- but he screwed up a wonderful idea. If you can't tell from this interview, he knows it sucks. He should have done a Mel Gibson and paid for it with his own money. As it was, the script wasn't ready, there wasn't enough pre-production, it kind of lurched into production, and he was always behind the corporate 8-ball. The idea was brilliant and deserved way more time and care. As it is, only idiots think Idiocracy is a good film. Life imitates art. As our culture gets dumber, the more it appreciates Idiocracy. It helps morons feel smart. Devo's vision of de-evolution was spot-on and never understood or appreciated by morons.
Yeah I was working out. I was working on my traps doing some dumbbell snatches and shrugs. I was getting pumped. I decided to throw on your movie during my workout.

Mike Judge is a legend and is up there with Matt Stone and Trey Parker in creating satirical comedy. I highly recommend the Cinemax Series "Mike Judge presents: Tales From the Tour Bus". It's an animated docu-series, that delves into the stories of musics greatest legends. It's a series so full of humour, tragedy, and music and I can not recommend it enough.
I have said this so many times ... I'm always telling people that this movie was preparing us for the narrative we are now living 😱 . Literally, this and the book 1984. I've gone so far as to ponder on Orwell, being the Fabian he was, having put that book out as a narrative that was to come to fruition in the year of the coded title. Everyone thinks 1984 was projected 40 yrs earlier than it really happened (present times). I think more that we've been there since then and they laugh at us because we can't even realize it
"They cut the effects budget.... but the paid to make the movie... so I'm grateful." What a pro. They sabotaged the movie's production and buried its release, Judge says nice things about them.
I ordered this movie from Amazon and while watching it I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or get angry. I spent 31+ years in American industry and wrote a book series about the decline and fall of the American work ethic. As a luxury vehicle modifier (conversion vans) and an assembly line worker (fire trucks) I worked with people who could not read on a high school level, could not read a simple tape measure, and honestly believed that 3/8ths was more than 3/4ths! Many times I was taken aside by crew leaders and supervisors and advised to “dumb down“ my language so that many of my coworkers could better understand me. During one production meeting when asked to share my thoughts I started off by saying “Well gentlemen , not to sound presumptuous -“ a coworker immediately cut in saying “There he goes again with them $100 dollar words!” Indeed many of my coworkers asked me “Why you gotta use them bigass words?!”
I first watch movie around 2009 when I was searching for any movies to watch on Netflix, when it was both streaming and renting by in-mail DVDs. Out of all the movies I watched, this was one of the memorable movies along with The Darwin Awards and Henry Poole is Here.

I can kind of see why he might be unhappy about it. I love the movie but the cracks do show. They took his budget from him resulting in some really cheap looking CG at times. Not to mention some of the script woes. I love the film but it is definitely flawed and I could see why Mike may have disappointments with it
The language thing is actually really interesting. Throughout all of history, language has evolved. It’s only been through the mass homogenization of language, conditions under which it hasn’t been allowed to evolve as freely, that we perceive it to have devolved. Yet, we still find ways to make it our own. Interesting book by Guy Deutscher that touches on it

Mike Judge and Crocs are the best. I wear Crocs almost all summer and sometimes in winter too if it's dry weather.
Same. Flip flops in the summer, Crocs in the winter
My favorite sequence of events!
I’ve watched it 2 or 3 times before. One of my teachers even played it in class once. It’s a great lesson on how society fails.
Yep it was down hill from 2000, just look at society today.
Even they knew the differences between men and women.
Russia, China and India are gonna take over and rule the world
Could just watch msm to see how society fails lol
Talk About a "Legacy". In 2005 this movie accurately Predicted Smartphones (post-2009), Mass Surveillance, Trash TV overtaking normal Television. All 5-10 years before those things happened.
Let's be Honest We knew it

Wtf can't find any evidence that movie existed.
It also predicted the popularity of crocks.
@HOPE and PEACE okay the solar panel remark makes no sense. Think about what you said for a moment 😂
They purposefully botched the release of the movie.
Best movie ever! I loved it. Mike Judge is awesome!
He did 2 seasons of a show called Tales from the Tour Bus, don't know where you can find them but the are great.
I saw this movie in theatres when it came out. Shocking how fast this movie became prophetic
Really? I think it was only released in a hundred theaters and Fox spent nothing to promote it.
It's ok Daniel, I believe you
It's intentional
@@mightisright weellllll I saw it at MGM Grand in Conroe, TX which is an hour north of Houston. Can I even tell you how much popcorn I had for further proof?
Mike Judge is the absolute master of making total fun of something while also accurately portraying how it is at the same time.
"making total of of something while also accurately portraying how it is at the same time." That's called "satire." You're the master of circumlocution.
@marydestefano9487 I believe they meant accurately as in authentic/genuine. It is still satire, but most satire often shys away from a more mundane portrayal opting to be more hyperbolic.
Love that documentary!
One of my favorite movies. Even when I first watched it years ago, I remember thinking, "this is sorta a possibility the way I see things going. It's exaggerated, but not that far off the mark." And here we are a decade and a half, give or take, later. Sadly, we still seem to be heading in this direction.
We all need to thank Mike Judge for the amount of intelligent entertainment that he provided the world. Thanks Mike!!
Wow its crazy to see how disappointed mike is/was with that movie.. this is easily hands down top 3 funniest movies ever made bc you see elements in actual society every day. Take more pride in idiocracy mike! Its definitely considered a cult classic at this point
sounds more like he just had a bad experience making it, not that he's hard on the final product
Yes, probably his best work.
I thought it was a horror? 🤷
It made 400 grand with a 2mill budget. So yeah
It’s his not his style, he’s so humble
insanely underrated. I loved this movie since day one.
Crocs are huge in military deployments. It’s kind of the ultimate shower shoe because you typically have to walk a decent distance through gravel/sand/etc to get from you sleeping location to the communal showers/latrines.
Met Judge at SXSW and proclaimed the film was way ahead of it’s time. He told me he must hear that 10 times a day.
"Because they got electrolytes." The immortal essence of our society.

This movie was replayed so many times in Comedy Central and I watched it every single time 😂
I saw it just after it was released , hilarious, everyone I mentioned it to had never heard of it. Its one of those films you never forget and numerous real life situations always made remember moments from the movie
One of my all time favorite films, thanks for writing it.
Mike Judge is a unique version of a genius.

Yeah I love it as well love how they had clothes that were plastered with company logos probably will happen at some point
Have you ever seen PCU?

I love that show so much. Why didn't he make a 3rd season?

Documentary😂
I have said this so many times ... I'm always telling people that this movie was preparing us for the narrative we are now living 😱 .
Literally, this and the book 1984. I've gone so far as to ponder on Orwell, being the Fabian he was, having put that book out as a narrative that was to come to fruition in the year of the coded title. Everyone thinks 1984 was projected 40 yrs earlier than it really happened (present times). I think more that we've been there since then and they laugh at us because we can't even realize it
Its not a documentary. Its a movie

"They cut the effects budget.... but the paid to make the movie... so I'm grateful."
What a pro. They sabotaged the movie's production and buried its release, Judge says nice things about them.
They realized the movie was about them (or at least their system) and got pissed off!
Yeah try writing a book then getting normal people to read it 😂😂😂
They object to anything over five letters.
But I'm not writing for them.
Dear sweet Jesus. Now I know what my poor coworkers have to put up with in me. Ha. I ain't the smart one tho'.

It makes me a little sad that Mike wasn't happy with Idiocracy. I love this movie. If I see it on I'll stop whatever I'm doing and finish watching it. The cast was great. The idea of the deterioration of language is actually happening and it's scary.
Alot of things in that movie were prophetic.
