  • In this video, I discuss the results of a head to head comparison that I undertook with the Olympus mju (also known as the Olympus Stylus) and the Olympus AF-1 Mini (also known as the Olympus Infinity / Infinity Mini); both Point and Shoot 35mm Film Cameras.
I tried to make the comparison as fair as possible; same/similar compositions, taken seconds apart, same batch of film (Ilford HP5+ 400), same film development (at home) and same editing workflow. Any differences are discussed during the detailed comparison section.
I first select a favourite image from each camera to briefly take you through my negative to final image workflow. I select 6 scenes in which to compare images captured from both cameras against each other. I then conclude with a discussion on which of the two cameras I prefer (and why) along with which one I will be keeping. There is also a small clip near the end showing you how noisy (or quiet) the two cameras are in operation out in the field (or in my case, a graveyard).
If you are interested in a particular aspect, then please use the chapters below to take you to the area that you are most interested in. If you have any comments on questions regarding these cameras then please put them in the comments below. I hope you enjoy the content.

Thanks so much for your effort in doing this comparison! Just picked up a mint AF1 mini and I was looking for a comparison like this.

No problem Jorden, glad it helped. I had to get rid of the mju a few months ago and just have the AF-1 mini now which out of the two has proved the most reliable so far.

It looks to me that the MJU is consistently sharper throughout the pictures. That could be from less focus steps in the AF-1 I thought. But after seeing, that the church shot at (most likely) infinity was the same thing I fear it‘s actually a difference between the two (which is weird because you‘d think they‘d use the same lens design between those two). This is also just speculation because I could never find anything about the focus steps on the AF-1 but keeping in mind that it was released 4 years later than the MJU it wouldn‘t make that much sense to have that many less focus steps, that it would really be noticable.
The shallower depth of field in the wood sculpture could come from the MJUs 1/700 max shutter speed. Because the AF-1 Mini only reaches 1/500 it has to close the apeture down to expose correctly. Adding to that you mentioned the MJU was overexposing, so the apeture would stay more open than it would anyways.
Also the stronger contrast throughout the photos could come from the MJU overexposing and having to be pushed down later, which always reduces dynamic range.

Thanks for the comment, the mju ultimately became unreliable so I no longer have it. The AF-1 mini so far is working fine.

    Interesting video!
I bought an Olympus AF1 Mini when they first came out, for a holiday in France, it was my first decent camera.
I still have it somewhere, I just can't place it!
I've had several mju models in the meantime, in fact my latest video on my channel shows my Olympus mju zoom 105
To be fair the AF1 mini performs equally as good as the mju models in my opinion, I was always impressed by the results of both.
I've added your channel, hopefully you'll connect with another retro film camera enthusiast?

Thanks PD, I only have the AF-1 mini now, the mju autofocus became unreliable. I have several film videos in the pipeline this year.

Cool video! Very interesting comparison. To me also the MJU looks like the better camera. Anyway I would always choose a camera where I can choose f stop and shutter speed myself - even if it may be little clunkier to handle.

I never said it would be my only camera.. 😂, it’s to fill the need of being able to take something small, uncomplicated out and about from a film perspective. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it.

lens is the same but the mju has a better focus system and better lightmeter.

Probably but I later discovered not all was right with my mju so I've just stuck with using the AF-1 mini which seems to be more reliable.
