Croatia definitely deserved to win in 2024, just like in 1998 with "Neka Mi Ne Svane," 1999 with "Maria Magdalena," and in 2000 with "Kada Zaspu Anđeli," all Eurovision classics. "Kada Zaspu Anđeli" was very popular in European music charts for months. As I mentioned in another entry, some countries (Croatia, Slovenia, Malta, Moldova, San Marino, Cyprus, Czechia, Albania, Iceland, Georgia, Lithuania, Poland) are always underrated in Eurovision and they stand no chance of winning in the current system against the always-overrated "big shots" like Sweden and the like. These countries, at most, can achieve an honorable third or runner-up position. Eurovision should be a SONG contest, not a COUNTRY contest.

I think Moldova's staging was actually really good.
She might have been alone on the stage, but she had perhaps the best graphics of this year to back her amazing voice and presence.
Remember Zoë from 2016? she was alone on the stage with just her graphics as well and it did well.
The song "In the middle" also didn't lack a public appeal, everyone was clapping in the arena (and I did the same at home).
She deserved more in my opinion.

So has anything happened in the jury guidelines that made them change how they evaluate songs?

  • @rinjoo3

From Finland here. Just getting to Final was enough for this year after last year. And being in Top 20 even better. The UMK quality this year was good again but not as superior as last year, which is probably partly because of the succes Käärijä made so some artists, who possibly could have better songs, might not have wanted to be compared to that all the time. Next year will probably be better (if the current Eurovision crisis isnt affecting things too much :/ ). And if we get better song next year, then there is kind of starting to be pattern where we have mega succes every second year and then "break year" between them 😶

In my opinion, there should be more points available for each country to give.
Now each can give points just to 10 other countries. You can be 11th in all countries, and yet you get 0 points.
Its just too many competitors, so it is difficult to select only 10.
It could be interesting to see resoults if each country would get points. From 15 to 1 in first semifinal, and from 25 to 1 in finals.

Yea that was kinda weird to put Ukraine on the 2nd spot in the final.
But to be honest, it absoluteley doesn't matter where you put Ukraine in running order, because they gonna kill the televote either way. So i guess producers couldn't put Serbia or Cyprus (from semi final 1) at the 2nd spot in the final because of their running orders in semi final, so it was the best choice to give the 2nd spot to Ukraine.

    • @ceelientjaa
      @ceelientjaa Před 13 dny +1

@@ceelientjaa In 2010 too, they had vote from the beginning, and they placed at no.20 or there about. So, it didn’t seem to make any difference then. I think the reverse recap at the end might’ve helped, but I think we need to wait a few more years to see who places in that spot and where they place on the scoreboard to make a decision whether the “death spot” is still a fair term. Serbia barely made it through the semis from the same spot, but that was an underdog anyway. So, I guess it’s different.

Speaking about jury diversity. This year, Ukrainians chose who they want to be on the Ukrainian jury. And the composition was: a singer (Alyosha), a music producer, two choreographers, one of whom has extensive experience in staging TV shows and Ukrainian Eurovision acts, and a music journalist and reviewer. I guess it could be a bit different, but EBU requires gender mix (either 3 women and 2 men or 3 men, 2 women).

Jurors were just afraid of Ukraine winning given that Ukraine was a cohost just last year and Ukraine won’t be able to host. Ukraine could have overtaken Croatia and Switzerland if more jurors had given Ukraine points. There were way too many jurors who gave Ukraine 0 points. And producers strategically put Ukraine second in the running order.

"They dont need to win" is not the attitude though - Ireland and Sweden both won multiple times in a decade cos their songs were the best and that's what matters, and the only thing that should matter. Sorry but lets not be delusional, Ukraine's songs are among the best in Europe for the past 20 years, starting with Ruslana who singlehandedly turned a stagnant kitsch retro tv contest into a dynamic modern show.

I wanted Australia & Iceland through!
Australia had the amazing cultural aspects, but it would have been better having Zachaariaha on a large rock, that resembles Ayres rock with a hug flowing outfit on as the wind machine blowed. Would have loved colourful aboriginal art saturating the L.E.D's.
With Iceland, I naturally wanted Hera to go through as I'm a huge fan of hers. Broke my heart when she crashed out, even though I knew in my heart of hearts, the song wasn't enough to get her through. Glad you guys loved her too. She's such a dance diva!
I agree, I would've taken out Luxembourg and Serbia, as the Serbian song didn't go anywhere for the first two minutes. It lost me.
With Finland, they likely would have done better had they changed the presentation dramatically from their UMK performance. It had been seen by that point and it lost its newness and its charm, so people were moving over to acts from Croatia or the Netherlands.
Cyprus really upped their game. She kept improving with every performance and eneded up leaving me impressed, even though I didn't really care for the song. And those lyrics were awful, but she sold the song. For someone so young, she's a great performer.
Loved Lithuanua. Sylvester really did deliver a fantastic performance. One of my favourite songs this year.
Ireland honestly had the BIGGEST glow up! From that thrown together performance on their national selection, Bambie stepped up, and they put everything in to it and delivered such an amazing, unique and memorable performance!

I am amazed that Ukraine almost won the semifina! Only 4 points behind Croatia. I think the buzz for Croatia has been much more than everyone thought it'd be a clear sweep winner, but in reality, it was not the case. I never bought the song (which I think it's a basic repetitive rock song, with an ordinary rock staging. Audience pleasing due to its repetitive lyrics...but that's all)...I think he nevertheless gave a great show on stage, but I don't think Croatia deserved the win (neither a Top3 tbh).
Congrats to well deserved winner Nemo! and congrats to Ukraine (my absolute favorites!).

2.BL is the only one of them all who is the author and performer of his own song. He is the most charismatic performer. It has the original text. Looking at the other songs, his is the most recognizable. His energy is contagious. The audience sang and danced with him from start to finish. With the song Rim tim tagi dim performs for the first time as a performer. It's his first performance!
      3.
CROATIA IS STOLEN! The number of audience points won by BL is the 5th best result in ESC history. So in 2024, Marko -BL won the largest number of audience votes! Nemo was only 5.
      4. It NEVER happened that the jury gave only 2x12 points to the audience winner! Shameful! Despite this, BL was ranked third by the jury!
      5. After the performance in the final, BL jumped to 58% on bookmakers. Nemo was, if I'm not mistaken, 5th with 12%. It NEVER happened that there was such a difference between the votes of the audience and the jury! Because the jury was influenced by some lobbies. It has NEVER happened in the history of the ESC that the 5th beat the 1st in the bookmakers who has as much as 58%! Yes, not to mention that BL beat Nema and won the ESC award for best performer! Need more proof that Nemo didn't deserve to win?

Yeah I don't want to change the way the vote is going at all whatsoever, I don't know how anyone could look at what almost happened this year and say "Yes, give me more televote impact!" the televoters are far less objective than the juries, people used to complain about the juries being subjective and other such complaints, but the televoter will just vote for their political allies at this point. They're really the ones to commit the politics and Eurovision problem not the juries anymore.

At a time when there were not so many wars, but there was a cold war, it was the same. Politics is always there and unfortunately it will continue to be. With more lobbies for other things that were not there before and are now visible for miles.
