How to Clean the Mass Air Flow Sensor (Code P0101 on Nissan Altima)

- The "Service Engine Soon" light came on our 2011 Nissan Altima so I headed to our local O'Reillys to have them read the computer. O'Reilly's offers free check engine light diagnostics. They will read the codes and then help you research exactly what the codes mean. After connecting the OBD-II they pulled the code P0101 which says that the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor is not performing correctly or has gone bad. The first thing you should try is to clean the MAF Sensor since the replacement part runs about $150. Usually a quick cleaning will remedy the situation, specially if you find that you have a real dirty air filter. It only takes minutes to do and the light will automatically cut off most the time. Sometimes you may have to have it reset but nothing another trip to O'Reilly's wont do.
You’re a good guy for posting this . Probably helped hundreds of people. Good man.
Thanks!
Dealership wanted $380 to fix it, thanks to you I fixed it for $11 👍🏻
Awesome! Great to hear!
Screw the dealerships for ripping people off.
How long until your light turned off?

Holy moly. I've been looking everywhere for good instructions on websites and auto parts stores. Eventually found this video. Thanks brother. This video is truly helpful and shows step by step how it should be done and not just "spray it" but shows how to spray and where! I was afraid of spraying inside and now know you're supposed to do that.
Glad to help!
Not all heroes wear capes
I just cleaned my air flow sensor and my engine light finally went off after driving it for about 80 miles 😊.. thanks for this advice instead of paying an arm and a leg at the STEALERSHIP!!
Glad to help out!
You helped me to solve the same problem with my Nissan Altima 2011. Thanks you very much!

Glad to help!
My dealership looked at it and the service engine light and said its 350$ to replace the mass airflow sensor.
Having looked at this video , I said no sir you ain't fleecing me today
replacing the sensor maybe won't resolve the problem, there are a TSB, I am looking for an specialist to reprogram the ECM according the P0101 problem. Please tell us how did you resolve it.
@@edgardhc Before you have it reprogrammed, change out the PCV valve. There is a TSB about the PCV valve needing to be swapped out. If the color of the valve is orange, it needs to be replaced with a black one. The valve can also throw that code.
@@gooneegoogoo123 Thanks for your recommendations, is black color. I tried to replace for a generic new one and din´t work, I kept the original PCV, because the generic PCV raised P0171 and the original was OK.
@@edgardhc If the original one is black, you should be OK. For code P0101, first verify that the PCV valve is black. Second, clean throttle body, clear code. If code returns then, replace MAF sensor. If code returns, then the issue is with the ecm software. Damn Nissan!!!!
Awesome!
This was a great video. Gentleman got straight to the point and told us what we needed to do and how to do it. This light just came on and coded on my sons car I should have it fixed in 10 or 15 minutes fantastic
Great!
did it fix the issue?
@@pattygq Yes this tip did fix the issue. Probably saved me $$$ for doing it myself.
@@sudokucafe There's also a campaign that Nissan is running in which an issue pops up about the MAF being incorrect but no drivability concerns exist. It's a quick update of the software which corrects it. Iirc it appears in high mileage Altimas.
If there are drivability concerns then it's a different issue.
Lol love the rooster in the background

Thank you so much! Fixed my issue. Worth checking the air filter while your in there. Mouse chewed through my air filter causing a tiny shred of paper to go into the MAF sensor. I lightly vacuumed it out and cleaned with spray since it was already out, and bought a new air filter of course. You saved me hundreds of dollars. Thanks! My check engine light stayed on but another search showed how to reset it.
how did you reset your check engine light? Replaced my mass air flow sensor since cel code was saying it was the issue, but cel didnt go out and symptoms revving and no power on its own was doing didnt go away fully. Replaced throttle body sensor now too, still cel on.
I have a 2020 Nissan versa I need a new air flow sensor, the dealer wants to charge me $325 and telling me I can’t put it on only the dealer cause they have to program it. But looking at the video I will try it myself , first I will try to just clean it , then if that don’t work I will get a new one but not at dealer . I really appreciate that video it helped plus the comments everyone made . Thx cause I have no money bless y’all

I think the 2011 Nissan Altima P0101 code is a defect of the part or the whole set up. Nissan should of did a recall on the part or something. No way this many people continue to have the same issue of that code.
This was so helpful, now I know I can fix mines and I'm a woman

Ooh man thank you so much, this helps. Seems like most Nissan's have this issue. I just came from dealership recently, they cleaned throttle body and mass airflow sensor and everything. The issue was fixed for two days then we had -15 degree Celsius then the check engine light came on for P010. Two days after the temperature went to 0 degrees Celsius. Now the P010 is gone. For what ever reason in my car this light comes on between -5 degrees and below.
By any chance if anyone happen to know why this is only happening in cold please let me know, and if you know a fix that would be awesome.
Thank you for the info and the demonstration!
Glad it was helpful!

How many minutes or hours did you wait to get the light off?
Tony Stark it should go away ASAP. That’s why the guy at auto zone told me. He told me to clean it first then wait a bit. If it still shows, then it’s damaged

first always disconnect battery before service a MAF sensor.
Hey,
I have a 2011 Nissan Altima. The check engine light is on and randomly my traction control sign goes on. When the traction sign goes on I can't pass 2,500 RPMs. Do you think if I change the filter and clean the sensor it will solve the problem?
Thanks
aissa boukrit same problem
This is whats happening with my 2015 Sentra. Did you figure it out? I had the code ran at Auto zone and it brought this up. I'm just curious about why the slip/traction sign came on as well.
No, changing the air filter won't resolve the problem. The traction control and the VDC goes on because the ECM detect a problem and protect it self cutting to 2,500 RMP. There are a TSB about this issue that is very common on 2011-2012 Nissan models .
Have you tried using a different sensor? I had the same issue. Swapped it out with a different build of the sensor and it went away. I was using a 2011 sensor instead of a 2013 sensor
Did you get issue fixed?
I got the P0101 code around May, but I wasn't able to afford to buy a new sensor til June, but even after I replaced it, the code is still on. I even had the sensor tested and verified it wasn't bad/dead on arrival. So now I am on to the steps of cleaning the sensor and connector, cleaning the throttle body, or as a final effort having to have the dealer reprogram the damn computer. Like I want to drop $200 on that.
Thanks for posting this video. I followed the instructions for my Altima 2013, after spraying mass air sensor, do i need to manually reset the "check engine" light or will it go by itself after driving for sometime?
It should turn off by itself. If not you may have to reset it with a OBD II Scanner
@@mazterovdizaster "Check Engine" light turned off by itself after driving about 30 miles. You are awesome, you saved me few hundred dollars :-) Thanks again!
@@MarimuthuSA glad to help!

Does this code always clear by itself when the MAF is clean (it appears to be so with you car) or does it require clearing first, and making sure it doesn't reoccur? Probably varies by maker?? Good vid.
Sometimes it does like in my case. Sometimes they have to be erased by a scanner.
I have Nissan Versa 2014. The rpm is jumping and car jerking while accelerating. Lot of people suggested to clean or replace maf sensor. There are no codes or engine light, will doing this help resolve the issue?
It could! This controls the air fuel ratio so it could cause all sorts of issues!
Do I have to clear the code afterwards? Or just doing this and the service engine should go away? I did all these steps and the light hasn't gone away so might need to the replace the whole part.
Nice my neighbor has that issues I will work on his
Hoep it works!
For ppl with this problem, did you have engine check light or Service Maitenence Soon, light on.
Ty you save me
I have a question I hope you can answer it. Should I disconnect the negative battery cable before attempting to clean the MAF senso 2016 Nissan Sentra SV
I took my car to get the sensor checked and this is what it showed but prior to this my car was on and the rpm was going to 1 and 1 and half and bolting .. would this be the issue to fix it
I can't get it loose to pull it out
Great step by step instructions. But did it stay off after driving 20+ miles?
Never came back on!
Great it's my turn today
i do the same step for my altima 2012 but light still on? plz any advice ? or have to get new one $130
You have to clear the code after you clean it , auto zone can do this , o'reilly too
@@nicktastic8183 i do buy new one auto zone $140 drive like 5 mile light still on, so you mean i can go back to auto zone & ask them to clear the code?
My car is idling a lot better, but my service engine light is still on. Going to drive it around a bit longer and see if it turns off.
UPDATE: Light just turned off after 82 miles on my 2012 Altima 2.5s.
Good luck!
What do I do if my screw is stripped and can’t get the maf sensor out any other way I can get in there to clean it or change it
I have my check engines On, the problem is the sensor air... Should i just clean it or buy new one??? Thank u
Try cleaning it first!
One of the last lights to run off shows a car with the lines under it, what light is that for? Mines comes on and won’t go past 2k rpm and losses power
I wish I had seen this earlier. Before this, I just sprayed into the hiose where sensor located. Right after this, I followed this instruction, it worked for bit. But now sensor giving me false readings. Used to be 372 on full tank but now it us 280 or less. When cable is disconnected, it still runs. 2010 Nissan pathfinder. Help. 😖

I have a 2008 maxima and mine has these weird screws with little dots in between the screw
I've got a question. I got a 2007 altima. When in parked it revs up by itself never going below 2rp what would the problem be
It could be a combination of things. Clogged cats, bad O2 sensors, bad MAF sensor, there's several things that can cause it. Get someone to put a scanner on it and see what kind of codes it has.
