How to Clean the Mass Air Flow Sensor (Code P0101 on Nissan Altima)

  • The "Service Engine Soon" light came on our 2011 Nissan Altima so I headed to our local O'Reillys to have them read the computer. O'Reilly's offers free check engine light diagnostics. They will read the codes and then help you research exactly what the codes mean. After connecting the OBD-II they pulled the code P0101 which says that the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor is not performing correctly or has gone bad. The first thing you should try is to clean the MAF Sensor since the replacement part runs about $150. Usually a quick cleaning will remedy the situation, specially if you find that you have a real dirty air filter. It only takes minutes to do and the light will automatically cut off most the time. Sometimes you may have to have it reset but nothing another trip to O'Reilly's wont do.

The issue was fixed for two days then we had -15 degree Celsius then the check engine light came on for P010. Two days after the temperature went to 0 degrees Celsius. Now the P010 is gone. For what ever reason in my car this light comes on between -5 degrees and below.
By any chance if anyone happen to know why this is only happening in cold please let me know, and if you know a fix that would be awesome.

It could! This controls the air fuel ratio so it could cause all sorts of issues!

Do I have to clear the code afterwards? Or just doing this and the service engine should go away? I did all these steps and the light hasn't gone away so might need to the replace the whole part.

My car is idling a lot better, but my service engine light is still on. Going to drive it around a bit longer and see if it turns off.
UPDATE: Light just turned off after 82 miles on my 2012 Altima 2.5s.

One of the last lights to run off shows a car with the lines under it, what light is that for? Mines comes on and won’t go past 2k rpm and losses power

I wish I had seen this earlier. Before this, I just sprayed into the hiose where sensor located. Right after this, I followed this instruction, it worked for bit. But now sensor giving me false readings. Used to be 372 on full tank but now it us 280 or less. When cable is disconnected, it still runs. 2010 Nissan pathfinder. Help. 😖

It could be a combination of things. Clogged cats, bad O2 sensors, bad MAF sensor, there's several things that can cause it. Get someone to put a scanner on it and see what kind of codes it has.
