  • I seem to make upgrading the storage in this Mac Pro 5,1 far more complicated than it needs to be! I think I got there in the end!

    Because of your video, I bought a MacPro 5.1 2012 2x2.4 Ghz, 24 Gb ram, 240 Gb SSD, 500 HDD, 640 Gb HDD, ATI Radeon HD 5770 1Gb, for 2000 DDK(about $183). I have installed a USB3 PCI and Asus 4xNVME with a 512 Gb NVme M2 card. On another 256 Gb SSD with Win 10 Pro. I have bought a RX 590 8gb in original box, for 850 DDK (approx. $125).

    The NVME drive uses 4 lanes of PCI-E, so with only one drive in your ASUS drive adapter, plugging it into a x4 PCI-E port won't make a difference compared to x16. If you were to plug four drives into the ASUS adapter, you would need to plug it into a x16 PCI-E port to connect all the drives.

      I am not sure the ASUS card works, with one installed in mine, like he did in the video, everything works fine, but as soon as I added more to fill the other three slots, now none of them are recognized.

    • @triXsolarflare
      @triXsolarflare Před rokem +1

      I have this ASUS card in the slot above the video card, I put the single slot original video card back in so I could squeeze that card in, that is the x16 slot correct? and it still only sees the one NVME. Maybe this ASUS card does not support non-bifurcation boards? The ASUS card is pretty cheap and cannot find any of the cheaper cards that specifically state that they support non-bifurcation motherboards.

  • @user-bi7fk2sf5b
    @user-bi7fk2sf5b Před rokem +4

    Just to add to the interesting comments....the ASUS NVME card only supports a single NVME ! This is because it needs bifurcation support to divide the X16 lanes into 4X4 lanes one 4 lane for each NVME. 5,1 does not support bifurcation. Hence they are cheap cards . Hope that can be in a next video? Just a X4 PCIE NVME should support over the speed your seeing.

    I use those small SSDs as my opencore installer drives - they are MUCH faster than using USB. As others have pointed out the PCI card won't do more than 4 lanes unless you sacrifice the 16X video card slot - I just got a cheap 4X PCI host card for my NvME drive Orico NVME M.2 expansion card - Samsung 870 drive I'm getting 1300 in slot 3

    put the nvme card in the bottom slot 1 and the video card in slot 2.. they are both 16x slots and that nvme will do 1500/1450 read/write if set up that way

    Looking forward to the next video! AFAIK, the motherboard unfortunately won't support more than 1x NVMe drive per PCIe slot with that ASUS card. Think there is a card that allows multi-NVMe support but it's $$$. Were you planning to use multiple NVMe drives with the ASUS card?

    Hello, I have a problem with OpenCore Legacy patcher and the sonnet 4x4. I have a 5.1 with monterey on it. rx580 8gb. Without the PCIe card it works just fine, no problems whatsoever. If I plug in the PCIe card with the nvmes the card blocks the booting process of the OS. I have tried to reset the NVRam holding the keys combination, waiting for 4 chines to happen, switch off the mac, plugging in the PCIe card but it still blocks the booting process. Any suggestions? Thank you

    Hi quick question i have recently purchased a 980pro. But on doing a bit of research due to the pcie slots only being 2.0, and only reaching to max speeds of 1500(so to say because I haven’t actually tried it out myself)
    Would I get quicker speeds if I used a nvme to usb3.0 caddy instead of using the pcie slots
    As I do have usb 3.0 on my 5,1

      Believe it or not just finalized the exact same set up, n gone through all the same issues u came across, lil tip in return for your advice with the NVMe storage, a lil toothpick to separate the gap between the GPU's touching. If possible leave the original GPU slotted in but not powered, u can get the loading screen back and any mitigate any dual screen issues.
      To add to the coincidence, the project I'm working on uses the exact same background sound Drifting/Dreaming at 432hz😁👊 wish you the best, n thanks🙏

    I have a 2009 Mac Pro with Mojave. It presents the following problem. While I want to download, for example, an update of some program, for example Firefox, some file or something else, the process stops. What could be wrong? my connection is optical and the relevant check has been done by OTE and everything was fine since the pages on the internet open very quickly. Do I need to change anything in the hardware? Do you suggest I get a new network card? I've tried everything but I don't know what else I need to do. Thanks

    Hello and thank you for this video. I have the same Asus nvme X16 card as you. I'm on mac osx big on opencore and Mojave with a Mac Pro 5.1. The PCIe NVMe Asus card is not recognized by my mac. It is not recognized in PCI. Disks are not recognized in Storage. Disks are not recognized in Disk Utilty. When I connect the discs with an external box they are recognized. Nothing is recognized by Mojave or Big Sur. Do you have a solution for me? How did you get your Asus card to be recognized by the Mac?
