Ascending Mount Whitney via Crabtree Lakes - Southern Sierra High Route (PT. 2)

- September, 2022 -- This is Day two on the Southern Sierra High Route after spending the night in upper Miter Basin (Sky Blue Lake).
I edited a lot of unnecessary talking out to keep the video to the point, but I was originally planning to climb into the next basin via the Russell-Carillon Col. It was an ambitious goal to say the least. I think even getting to Tulainyo Lake the following day took several hours and I am very grateful I didn't end up doing that at night with very little knowledge of the route.
On top of that, I didn't research climbing Mount Muir and tried three times, which caused me to waste a lot of time. I was near the peak on the correct route, but when I reached the final ascent which is an exposed class 3 scramble, I didn't feel comfortable doing it with a full pack and also didn't feel comfortable leaving the pack for the Marmots to scavenge. Being near the Whitney trail, I just imagined the marmots here were more aggressive. If they put a hole in my gear, it could have potential for ending the entire trip.
Still, this was an amazing day on the trail even though, I've already done a large portion of it several times.

Excellent trail report - I must say your video technique is far better than 95% trekkers/explorers. Thanks
I thank you for this videos
I usually hike just for a few hours
Never done overnight but
This makes me wanna try
Keep the good trail report
Peace
Thank you! I'm glad I could inspire you. Get out there.
Nice video. Planning on heading into Miter Basin this year, hopefully. FYI- @3:14 "The Dreaded Sandhill" 🙂 I came down that from Discovery Pass and continued down Crabtree Basin. Would not want to go up that hill.
Thank you! I'm starting to get better at adding titles/captions when I can't remember names of things. Its so hard to be a presenter when my brain is working on overdrive to just move.
I feel the same way, and I think its because its name has sand in it. That is exactly why I chose the alternate.
@@trvrsoutdoors Same here. I chose a trip so I'd heading down that hill. You're a much more advanced backpacker than I am which is why I like watching people like you take these trips. I can gauge what is doable for me by seeing how you handle things. I hope people appreciate the work that goes into these types of videos. Setting up the camera, walking back down the trail (or scree slope, boulder garden etc) then walking back up. Then the editing....
@@HuskyMike most everyone's been extremely kind. Thanks. It's a ton of work, but it doesn't feel like it when it's so enjoyable.
Did the dreaded sand hill last season. Would not recommend. Brutal
Yeah that thing did not look fun...This route wasn't either, but I didn't slide all that much. Just a few sections.
Great job bro!!!
Just curious. How did you handle the permit for the day you spent in the Whitney zone?
I talked to a ranger who notified me that my permit for the Sierra High Route allowed me into the Whitney Zone. However, I also happened to nab a permit for the Whitney Zone before I found that out. Double lucky!
