    First things first.. Thank you for super well executed tests. Very informative and interesting!
    I'm a freediver just getting into spearfishing and I'm looking to get a smaller gun for reef / shallow waters in the Med. where I spend a couple of months a year. Even though I'm after a smaller gun I still want it to be powerful and accurate and the Pathos 82 gun in this test seem to be exactly what I'm looking for!
    Since I'm a noob at the spearfishing thing I don't understand 100% of the lingo, and I hope you can help clear a few thing out for me!
    1. The gun in the test, is that the Pathos Pro 82, or is it the Pathos Open 82? Can't really tell in the vid.
    2. The "small ID bands", is that bands with small inner diameter? Or is "ID" something else?
    3. Does the "@ 360%" mean a elongation / band stretch of 360%?
    4. What bands (make) are used and how long are the bands cut to achieve that stretch?
    Sorry for all the questions but you seem to have all the answers, and I just hope you can spare a few minutes of you time to answer them. :)
    Thanks and All the best! / E

    Thank you for the research. In minute 22:05 the main problem of the drop is that the bands are stretched to third position. Try this experimental groups:
    1º: stretch at first position, not third
    2º: stretch to second position
    Compare
    3º: Use shorter shaft with the best stretch position found before
    4º: Use default faceted pathos shaft with cone and without cone

    Thanks a lot, man! You did a hell of a job! I would be glad to do some tests (and hopefully will) with a shorter shaft... We know we need AT LEAST 7 mm shaft to be able to TAKE (not just wound) a big fish. Roller recoil is 2 times less at all other things equal because acceleration time is 2 times longer (with a pre-strech)... This allows heavier band load and, if properly done, longer killing distance... BUT this is all theory, it needs proper verification. Thanks again.

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 7 lety

      Yes, I was quite surprised how poorly roller setup worked. I think the problem is controlling wishbone pushing the tail of the shaft up and de-stabilizing the shaft. There needs to be a solution for that so that the theoretical advantage of a roller setup can work.

    Many thanks for this video....very informative! I recently bought a new Pathos 82 pro (closed muzzle, aluminum tube with open guide, D'Angelo I). Factory setup is with an 120cm 6.5mm faceted point shaft and a single 19mm 26cm black pathos band.
    1) In your opinion, if I want to keep a single band setup for simplicity and quick reload, which combination of band dia/length & shaft dia/length would you chooce for max speed/highest accuracy/minimum recoil ? I hunt very shallow (hole hunting/shallow ambush) in rocky areas for small/medium white fish mostly so my setup needs to be able for quick max speed shots but also be able handle some shots on rocks/holes without my shaft bending every time...
    2) gun seems a bit heavy on hand during ambush...do you think that changing the tube with a carbon one will help me obtain more neutral buoyancy?

      Hola Carlos, si pescas los peces gordos que mencionas mejor pasar a varillas de 7.5 mm impulsadas por dos gomas de 16mm. La varilla es mucho mas rigida (acapeta mas potencia en gomas) y sobretodo con el peso adicional la energia cinetica es mayor lo cual significa mas penetracion la cual necesitas para lo peces de mas masa :). En mi canal veras que cazo AJs con fusiles de 110 0 120 de largo, usado siempre varillas de 7.5mm con gomas de 16mm. have you tried the test shot with a booster band on the pathos roller?
    They sell the stock laser roller gun with the 14mm booster band, and the 16mm roller band.

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 8 lety +1

      +Don Solomon Yes I have tried the booster band and found it caused more band tangles so I gave up on it. For me the problem was not power ... it was more of a problem of shooting low when power was added. This is a problem that I am surprised not more people talk about with rollers ... the design of the roller has no way to avoid pulling the tail of shaft down as the band contracts below ... this happens as soon as you start increasing power with pre-tension. A roller without pre-tension is just not worth it as there is very little power. Low shooting gun is ok if it is consistent ... but here the problem is that the shaft is diving and trajectory is very bad making accurate shooting as you change distance impossible.

  • @corryv
    @corryv Před 7 lety +5

    Your shooting to the right is constant, I think it is how your finger is placed on the trigger. THe trigger should be on the cushion half way through the first segment of your finger. If it's on the tip - you'll shoot left, if it is on the "bend" of the first segemnt as I suspect in your case, you will pull to the right.Exactly the same factor with pistols and revolvers.

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 4 lety +3

      Speargun is totally different dynamics than with a firearm. With a pistol, once you shoot the bullet is out of the barrel before the recoil can affect the shot. With a speargun, recoil happens as the shaft is leaving the track. So you put a lot of effort into controlling recoil by handle modification to allow the track to be as stable as possible as the shaft is leaving the track. Also with a speargun, even a tiny bit of offset in the flopper, or even how the line goes over and back behind the shaft ... can affect trajectory a little bit. So a bit of right or left of center is totally acceptable and is not due to my finger placement.

      Yes the C4 Urukay is really nice once you change a few things. As for the Pathos 82 the best setup is with thin 13.6 to 14.1mm small ID bands form Primeline. The Sigalsub 14.5mm will not do as good unless you move to much heavier shafts. The perfect shaft for the 82 is a Sporasub America One shaft @ 6.75mm and 125cm length. One thing I noticed , correct me if I'm wrong .... In the final part with 2 small id 14 and arrow from 125x7 handle " Angel 1 " were not modified with epoxy and fired anyway very well ..... Then, with arrow 130x6 , 5 , you have changed the handle ( as for pathos 130 ) ....
    It was necessary for the 82 ? From the videos it seems to me that as long as you are using shaft to 7 mm, the "simple ergonomic grip"(like angelo 1) can be sufficient...

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 8 lety +2

      I initially had accuracy problems and thus I decided to put a setup which I know is dead accurate ... my custom handle and the Sporasub shaft. Later on I discovered the accuracy problem was due to the Pathos shaft. The handle used does not matter and both are equally accurate. The handle customization is not necessary on the 82 gun as recoil is minimal. Both the D'Angelo 1 and D'Angelo II with sear change and custom grip shot equally accurate.

      incredible. 7 years have already passed 😳. It's a shame you stopped posting videos. after having revealed the potential of 14 mm bands, now it would be nice to verify the potential of compact weapons. this winter I would like to make an "abellan 75" to use with a 7.5 shaft, and a "110" with an 8*135 shaft and three 14 elastic bands. In the Mediterranean, even for tuna, having shorter and more manageable weapons is a great advantage. for this reason many have switched to vacuum oleo-pneumatics.

      More important of all is correct setup for either roller or classic. Roller shoots great if properly setup, but to shoot great you have to sacrifice some power. Classic can be pushed to higher performance and still be super accurate. Personally I prefer the classic setup as it has more power and less things to go wrong ... plus much quicker to load. • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 8 lety +1

      +Lorenz No I don't think the floater helps in any way. Just keep your classic gun as is. To reduce recoil try shaping the handle to fit your hand exactly ... I will try and put a video of how to do that ... it does make a huge difference with guns at 120 or longer.

      @majdq8  Před 8 lety +3

      +Lorenz I use 151 silicone sealant inside the hole and around the wishbone plug and push the plug in. If using spectra wishbone loop I dip the end in plasti dip a day before and let it dry. The silicone is a lubricant and when it dries beomes a seal. I also put some of that silicone around where I will tie my constrictor knot and use kevlar line (200 or 250lb) to tie a double constrictor knot. Kevlar will never slip and the silicone prevents line burn on the rubber and seals and protects it ... and when it dries it holds the knot firm. Never ever had a knot or wishbone slip ... while I have many wishbone slips from knots done by gun manufacturers.

    Thank you sir for all your videos. I have a question how do you adjust for windage in a roller gun. My MVD in stock set up is shooting low and to the right. Low probably six inches at 4 meters and six inches right. I have not been able to figure out how to adjust point of aim. Tried new spears with no change. Have shortened the bands, have lightened the bands, no drastic change. It has the stock mvd rubbers and it is a very difficult gun to load. Is it just a matter of putting thicker 16mm rubbers on and making it longer than stock bands.

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 2 lety

      I found that rollers if pushed too hard, will flip the back of the shaft up when it exits the track ... this causes very low shots. My suggestion is to reduce the loading of the gun. Of course you will lose power, but at least the shot will be straight. In the video here you can see that happening exactly. You can compensate a little for the lost power by using thicker bands. The idea is to let the wishbone release the shaft before reaching the roller so that the rotation of the roller doesn't flip the tail of shaft. You really have to spend a lot more time tuning a roller , but it can be done and if done correctly results are very good (as in the video).

I also saw on a roller gun builders video that you make a double wishbone a super short and a long. You hook the spear to the long wishbone and when the short wishbone catches the roller ramp it prevents exactly what you said it throwing the spear up and down. Sad these companies aren't doing this from the beginning. Thank you so much again for all your videos. I have one more question for you. Do you think enclosed track rollerguns such as the pathos sniper and mako spearguns prevent this problem with an enclosed track? Have you seen a disadvantage to enclosed track guns? I think the bands are short. it has two bands. short and large. both 16 mm. one has 70 cm. and other has 1.45 cm without wishbone only rubber. do you know is that right, ? there are something wrong ? hope you can help me. you know the right size ? thank you

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 8 lety

      I am not familiar with that gun ... but let's say the 115 has 120cm band stretch and you want 340% strech ... thus you would take 120 x 2= 240 and then divide by 3.4 ... which gives you around 70.5 cm. So the 70cm band might be OK, but the 1.45cm band is way off and actually enough for 2 bands.

      The Pathos 82cm does not have too much band stretch, so I don't think that it can push a 7mm shaft to terminal velocity ... but @ 6.75mm I think it can get very close. Doesn't mean that 7mm won't do really well, just that a 6.75mm shaft might be a better fit.

    The standard setup of pathos 82 is with 19mm band and 6,5 shaft, the 20mm and 6,75 is overkill for such a small gun. WIth 17,5 bands and 6,25 shaft it would work even better.
    I have a pathos 90 with 2 14mm bands and 6,5 shaft and its shots are very accurate.

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 8 lety +1

      +Awaker The bands I got measured at 19.41mm so I assumed it was 20mm. As for the shaft, the default shaft came with notches and in the shop I asked to change it to shark finned shaft ... so it is possible that the original shaft was 6.5mm rather than 6.75mm ... but very little change (maybe 150 grams) ... moving from a 120cm to 130cm shaft @ 6.5mm would be more difference in shaft mass. The setup tested @ 7mm was amazing and very powerful accurate ... I never dreamed a gun so small could be setup with so much power. The 7mm setup is more powerful than many older 120cm guns with 150cm and 160cm @ 7mm shafts with 2 x 16mm bands!. I have tried many default factory setups @ 120cm that cannot pass 10cm penetration test @ 5 meters. The key here is the correct choice of bands! The 130cm @ 6.5mm Sporasub shaft shot extremely well ... and am sure @ 120cm it will also do really well in both 6.5mm and 6.75mm. For the 7mm shaft ... even though it did extremely well, I have a feeling that bands around 14mm to 14.2mm would do even better.

      Yes they are 17-4PH hardened stainless steel. Also the flopper and pin are hardened SS. They do need some work with a dremel tool to remove burrs and sharp edges, but they are priced very good for what you get. Can also ask for a cone ... which helps accuracy and penetration. I highly recommend them.

Visibility in the Mediterranean is about 15-20 meters so i have 75 gun for reef and 115 for blue. Tried rubbers from 14 to 16mm and the 14 worked best for me for long and fast shots, on both guns. • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 5 lety +1

      I really don't know. I think that there is a certain line where you need a certain amount of rubber to move a spear shaft. If you go over this power then the additional rubber hurts performance as it is just extra volume and weight. The heavier bands performed poorly with light shafts, but with heavier shafts the thicker diameter rubber gave better performance. I think for 7mm shafts and less diameter, best is 13.8 to 14mm bands and for heavier shafts the 14.5 to 15mm are better.

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  Před 7 lety +1

      Terminal Velocity is a term I use when I can no longer gain velocity from a given setup. So even adding band power will not change the velocity. Thus it makes no sense to push a gun too high above TV because all you get is more recoil for no gain. The ideal setup is about 20% above TV ... this way if you load your bands and they lose some power with time, you still have the same performance and same shaft flight.

    • @jpjpakos
      @jpjpakos Před 7 lety

      Thanks for your reply majdq8!!! The only explanation I can give for ''TV'' is the absolute latex contraction speed of the bands without load.I think that the easiest way to increase speed of the shaft is the pulleys, but then you need a very good amount of force...... Line release can be a huge problem if it snags. You will get shots off center and lose a lot of velocity. There is a fundamental problem in that the more you pre-tension the bands the more the wishbones will pull the back of the shaft up and make the shot go low. This needs to be addressed before I become interested in testing this again. But as you can see from the test, a roller is not going to improve on the classic setup with 2 bands. That is quicker and easier to load with less complications ... and more powerful! I just don't see the need for the roller as it hurts performance rather than helps.
