    One hint for scoring: We use glass stones to mark the tiles we already scored. It makes things for large areas much easier.

      Tantrum House have a 3 player playthrough video of Land vs Sea... the Cartographer mainly scores from Coral and Mountain connections, while everyone contests the bonus points and Caravan and Ship placement, and the end game trade route majorities. Its the deepest end of the game due to the asymmetry.

    Hi there. Love this game. Glad I watched because we were getting some of the rules wrong. I have a question. With the Waypoint token... Do you get a point for enclosing the tile it is on, OR if you complete a land or see area? In other words, are there essentially two ways to score a waypoint? Also if you use the whirlpool/volcano tile do you only get the five x's IF you enclose an area of land or sea, or do you get it just for putting it in the center of the six tiles? Thank you for your wonderful teaches!

    • @GoodGamesPublishing
      @GoodGamesPublishing Před 2 lety +3

      Hi Heidi - Glad you are enjoying Land vs Sea so much. As TravisP said, when scoring Waypoints you get a point for EITHER:
      1. Placing the final tile to surround a tile a Waypoint has been placed on. Return the Waypoint to its owner and score 1 point for it, no matter who owns the Waypoint.
      or
      2. Completing an area a Waypoint token is in. Return the Waypoint to its owner, and score a point for doing so, no matter who owns the Waypoint. In this way its kinda like a mobile bonus point.
      Waypoints are a critical part of the intended 4 player team game game. Players cannot openly communicate with their team mate about where they should place their tile, but instead use Waypoints to hint to their partner where they should consider focusing their tile placements. The more frequently and carefully team mates place their Waypoints and score from them by working together, the more points they score as a team. And they can mess with their rivals' Waypoints too, by returning and scoring them as above too. In this way Waypoints add a 7 to 15 point team based subgame to the 4 player experience. And team players can develop a subtle language about how they think each other should place their tiles too. Eg a Land player who already has another open or hidden Mountain edged tile, with a partner showing a visible mountain edged tile, can place a Waypoint on an open Mountain edge on the map to hint to their teammate to extend that Mountain range for even more cumulative scoring. If they can also score the Waypoint doing so, then even better!
      The Volcano / Whirlpool tile and its bonus points are scored only when the area it is part of is completed, as with other tiles and bonus points. It's often good to complete rival areas containing a decent number of bonus points... as it's better than leaving them to your rival to score. However it's even more important to complete rival areas containing the additional 5 bonus points on the Volcano / Whirlpool tile, as there are often over 10 bonus points that can go to either player / team in such areas. One of the most satisfying plays you can to is to make a hole in an otherwise completed area, to drop in the relevant Volcano / Whirlpool tile side, to complete the area and score all the bonus points... and maybe the area points too if its your area type! Play again tiles are VERY useful for this manoeuvre.
      It's also worth pointing out that when playing with the Mountain and Coral scoring option, as Monique and Naveen did here, that the mountains or coral edges on the Volcano / Whirlpool tile DO score immediately they are connected to adjacent Mountain or Coral edges of tiles around the hole. Mountain and Coral scoring is instantaneous, as usual. The player who places that tile is allowed to orient it however they like to score more or fewer such points.

    This is basically a redesigned Carcassonne ;-)

    • @GoodGamesPublishing
      @GoodGamesPublishing Před 2 lety +5

      As with most tile laying games, there are certainly some similarities, and many differences between this and Carcassonne.
      In both games, you lay a tile a turn each to make and extend a map... except in Land vs Sea you usually have 2 DOUBLE SIDED HEX tiles in hand to choose from, with 50% hidden information, rather than a random tile nobody can strategize around until after it has been played. You also replenish your tiles from 2 visible tile stacks at the end of your round, so you can play your current tile or tiles with some idea about what your next tile choice will be. In this way we think Land vs Sea gives players another layer of agency as they need to observe rival's visible tile sides, and the tile stacks they replenish from, when considering how to place their own tiles each turn. That's a whole layer of forward planning Carcassonne doesn't have.
      The tiles you play might also allow you to play your second tile and / or steal a rival's tile to change the tempo and add nuance to that agency.
      In the basic game there is a strong focus on area completion, which seems initially similar to Carcassonne's Castle completion, except areas are divided into Land or Sea... and you can only score from 1 type. Only the bonus points contained in areas are contested between the players. And incomplete areas remain unscored! So even in this area of greatest similarity there are substantial differences.
      Unlike Carcassonne, every tile you place here also gives your rival opportunities to score from too.
      Then Land vs Sea adds an instant cumulative scoring layer of edge connection with the optional Mountain and Coral scoring layer... which is integrated into the basic layer of area completion if you play it that way... or not if you just want to build unclosable chains that simply have to be blocked lest they score huge cumulative points.
      And it has immediate tile adjacency scoring with the Caravans and Ships scoring layer, along with a network majority end game scoring mechanism.
      This mix of area completion, edge connectivity and tile adjacency and majority scoring intersecting all that has quite a different feel.
      Then it has Waypoints that shine in the 4 player team game, and the trickery of the Volcano / Whirlpool shenanigans...
      Plus an asymmetric 3 player mode with the Cartographer player scoring mainly from Coral and Mountain edge adjacency while all players contest bonus points and trade route majorities....
      The 3 different scoring layers and 3 different player modes give you a tool box that suits a wide range of play group styles.
      We have a great free TTS mod of it available with it if you would like to try it out sometime!

  • @wemf2

    Fun game! I wonder if it would be more strategic to aim for larger land/sea masses than smaller ones?

    • @GoodGamesPublishing
      @GoodGamesPublishing Před 2 lety +1

      great question. It's usually best to go for small areas which are easier to complete than large areas, and easier to control the bonus points in... however it can of course sometimes be advantageous to try to finish large areas on the map if they only require 2 or 3 finishing tiles to do so. Play again tiles really help do this. The point at which Monique gave up on the north west land area, it only actually needed 2 or 3 tiles to complete (she had a splitting tile in hand perfect for its southern edge). If she had managed to finish that area she may have won the game. But its always a balance of knowing when to give up on a large area with too many open edges vs completing more feasible small areas.

    • @CasaNERDlol
      @CasaNERDlol Před rokem

      I agree that she lost when give up the large land. Because, even if you are trying to close your opponent have to limit his turn to try to block you at same time try to gain points. And Monique was in a far lead.
