The top-seeded duo of Lucy Kovalova and Callie Smith took full advantage of the absence of Anna Leigh Waters to dominate the top half of the draw, not dropping a single game and securing their spot in the highly anticipated gold medal match. They showcased their exceptional skills by defeating the #5 seeds, Lina Padegimaite and Lacy Schneemann, in the semifinals.
However, the real story of this draw, and the tournament as a whole, revolved around Padegimaite and Schneemann and the unexpected path they took to reach the semifinals. The team had initially lost in the quarterfinals to the seasoned duo of Sarah Ansboury and Jill Braverman on the court. However, a contentious paddle challenge altered their fate, resulting in their opponents' default. What made this paddle challenge intriguing was that Ansboury's Gamma paddle had been inspected and deemed valid before the match commenced. The default decision was based on the accumulated wear and tear on the paddle, which apparently surpassed the PPA's permitted standards during the course of a single match. The PPA's press release clarified that
"Ansboury's paddle was found to have degraded over the official limitations and, as such, was no longer legal."
