      I met Robert Clary a few times through a fan club called the Eddie Cantor Appreciation Society (I'm not sure if this fan club is still active). He was an extremely nice man; quite jovial. One thing that stands out in my mind is that you could still see the number tatooed on his arm from the time he was in a concentration camp.

      This was the 1960s, when a show was cancelled back then that was IT, no finale or wrap-up show. The first TV show to do so was "The Fugitive" starring David Janssen. I forget the year but that one did have a finale where Richard Kimball's innocence was finally esatablished and the story line wrapped up. That final episode was (at that time) the most-watched TV show in history.

    Notice that the Germans are carrying American arms in the early episodes of Hogan's? The guard who was protecting the water truck in the episode was carrying a Thompson SMG instead of a MP40. In fact, Sgt. Schultz carries a Krag rifle instead of a Gewehr 98 throughout the series.

    • @Vault57
      @Vault57 Před 2 měsíci +6

      I totally had a 'hold on' moment with that. I suppose you could say that they were using captured 1928A1s. I heard some German soldiers liked M1 carbines and would pick them up when possible. The studio probably didn't have access to many actual German small arms. In the 1960s, a lot of WWII movies were still being made and they probably had first dibs on historically correct weaponry.

    • @peterfiske6728
      @peterfiske6728 Před 2 měsíci +5

      The Germans did issue captured weapons to there own troops. There is a photo of a guard at a pow camp and he has a 1917 Enfield rifle. The krag that Shultz carries could have been correct if it had been Danish or Norwegian instead of american.

    • @robertsanders5355

    • @johnmcdonald587
      @johnmcdonald587 Před 2 měsíci +4

      The German wasted nothing when it came to captured small arms. These oddball weapons found their way into secondary usage like camp guards and Police department roles where the ammunition supply wouldn't be as much as a problem since the weapons would rarely be fired. Schulz's Krag rifle could have come from Norwegian sources as Norway was occupied at the time. The Brits left massive quantities of small arms and equipment behind when they evacuated at Dunkirk. All captured weapons were given German designations and the list is considerable.

    • @Absaalookemensch

    Rick. Good catch. I never noticed that Robert Clary was not in this episode. But I do remember the episode's best punch line. After Captain Mueller informs Colonel Klink that it's not mineral water in the barrel but Heavy Water used as a Neutron Moderator for Nuclear research, a panicky Klink says "I drank some of that water. Will I die from it?" To which Captain Mueller deadpans, "Only if Berlin finds out."😂😂😂😂

    There was at least a three episode arc where Richard Dawson was missing. I was noticable that he wasn't there because it was three in a row. You can sometimes notice when one of the other characters is missing from an episode, only because someone may show up that you normally didn't see. I did think that it was interesting that Dawson was listed in the final credits, even though his only appearance was in the opening credits.

      Well no it didn't. Bear in mind it was about a POW camp, not a concentration camp. Also, keep in mind many of the cast such as Robert Clary, John Banner, Leon Askin (General Burkhalter), Howard Caine (Gestapo Major Hochstetter) were Jewish. Werner Klemperer was half-Jewish. Klemperer, Banner, and Askin were refugees from Nazi Germany and Robert Clary was a concentration camp survivor. Now if those men didn't have a problem with the show, and as Clary put it "If you're an actor and you get a gig you say 'Thank you God!' and get on with it!" I don't see why anyone else should have a problem. (Howard Caine was from Tennessee although a WW2 veteran.)
      Now on the other hand I knew someone who did have a legitimate beef with the show. One of my uncles was a US Army Air Force veteran of WW2 and didn't like the show at all. Why? Because it made the Germans look stupid. Not a lover of the Germans by the way as he put it "They were anything but stupid! They sharp as hell and damned dangerous! The only reason we beat 'em was they ran out of gas!" An oversimplification of course but that should give you one man's opinion who was there of how formidable the German Wehrmacht was.
      All of the above considered though I enjoyed the show and apparantly so did many others, a TV show with a six year run isa pretty good success story.

    Yeah, the "Heavy Water" episode was one of my favorites also. I'll never forget the line when Klink is caught drinking the heavy water. He says "Is it Poisonous" and the other German responds "Only if the High Command finds out you did" or something like that.... 🤣
    Heavy Water (Deuterium Oxide - D2O) is indeed Toxic, BUT only if you drink large amounts of it. Even though that extra neutron in the hydrogen atoms doesn't take part in any chemical reaction, said neutron weakens what is known as hydrogen bonding - a process that the body uses in many chemical reactions. Too much D2O, and your body doesn't work right. Highly unlikely that one would ever drink too much D2O, however.

    I was in the military in 1965 & felt that since it was only 20 years after WWII, a show tha, that depicted a
    humorous version of life in a German POW camp, would receive massive resistance from former POW's!
    I was wrong & "Hogan's Heroes" became one of the many great "sit-coms", that started in the mid-1960's!
    p.s. Unlike a show like "Gilligan's Island", i.e. restricted cast, "Hogan Heroes" had 100's of POW's, to replace LeBeau!

I'm not sure if it's ever been explained, but my theory for Kinchloe been replaced is he was transferred to another camp by the Germans and replaced by Baker. Then Kinch escaped from the other camp and went home. That way, the writers of the show could maintain Klink's perfect record of no successful escapes from Stalag 13.
