  • We had another Derecho, rare for the month on December 15. This storm destroyed a shed that was attached to one of the original barns on the farm, which is still standing. Things like this hurt, but we will recover. Luckily, we had the tracked JCB Teleskid 3TS-8T on hand to do the cleanup!

How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a CZcams channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Sorry for all the work this caused.
Here is something to consider before rebuilding. A lesson from hurricanes: higher pitch equals less lift while lower pitch equals more lift. It sounds counter- intuitive but if you think of a roof as a wing, the higher roof stalls the flow over it more and a stalled wing produces less lift. The old barn has steeper roof than the scar from the shed roof so it produced less lift. I'm not a structural engineer or architect but this is a well-known phenomenon in hurricane land.

Plus it was probably newer pine poles, and those rot off and are WEAK compared to older lumber... new stuff has no heartwood and just doesn't hold up. I won't even waste money buying pine poles or fence posts anymore-- they're just garbage, ESPECIALLY since they did away with the chlorated copper arsenate (CCA) pressure treatment-- that new "yellawood" crap is absolutely worthless... Yeah we've got some old barns and stuff that are basically useless anymore, can't store hay in them and don't need them anymore... have just quit making repairs on them and they're starting to lose tin. No great loss when they finally go. The one barn at Shiner I'd looked at possibly doing some work on it to put a big tractor door on one end to store round bales, but the wood is SO dry rotted and termite eaten that it's really not worth it-- you can put your fist through the 1-by wall boards. With the cost of buildings/materials we just started buying those metallic carports and putting them up, and then enclosing them as needed/where needed. SO much cheaper than new buildings, and it provides basic cover. Have several of them for tractor sheds and equipment sheds. Later! OL J R :)

We were a part of that same storm in northern Wisconsin. The worst winds were after the storm and I think the peak wind was 80 miles an hour. That was about three in the morning and I got pretty scary. We’re pretty heavily forested area and we survive pretty well but hundreds of houses in our area had lots of damage from trees falling on them. Most people didn’t have power for five days. If I was you I’d tear down hat old barn and just put up one whole new building if possible. Also, are you ever going to do anything with the old dairy barn? Seems like it’s hard to retrofit so it might be better to just scrap that out also and try to do something else there if possible. Thanks for the great video Ryan.
