Jeff's cover made this 1984 song by Canadian songwriter Leonard Cohen famous. Tragically he died young soon afterward. "Hallelujah" has been covered by many others as well, notably including kd lang (another Canadian) and a cappella quintet Pentatonix (that version is breathtaking)...
The version you heard on Shrek was by John Cale, the original version by Leonard Cohen is also used in Watchmen. Buckley is a talented guy but Cohen is a poet.

This is the most recorded anthem of the past decade or more. It's the product of the most gifted of rock/folk/pop songwriters of the past fifty years, the late Canadian Leonard Cohen, and the gifted young voice phenom and one-record wonder, Jeff Buckley, who drowned shortly after putting out the record (his father, fine singer Tim Buckley, died of an OD very young, as well). Leonard Cohen wrote an entire collection of great songs, most famously "Suzanne." Buckley's entire studio album is wonderful.

Rufus Wainwrite did a cover of this that was on Shrek. It was written by Leonard Cohen, but basically everybody has done a cover. Rumor has it that Cohen wrote hundreds of verses, but only included like four when he recorded it. A few of the covers use a few different verses, but most of them are just gone.
David Bowie once said if he was stuck on a desert island and only allowed to have one record, it'd be Jeff Buckley's album. That's some coronation right there.

Leonard Cohen the writer of this song came up with over 60 verses for this song. It is however best known for the Jeff Buckley cover. Another artist taken way before his time!
The original was by Leonard Cohen, but this is the most famous version - and for good reason. Buckley reinvents the song and delivers a transcendent vocal performance. Most of the other covers you'll hear are based on this version -- like Rufus Wainwright's version (the one you heard in Shrek). If you want to hear another great cover version, try K.D. Lang's.

Thank you so much for reacting to Jeff Buckley!!! I've been watching for you or Leo (Mr. Video) or Jamal to check him out because his voice is absolutely bewitching and transcendent of his grave. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!!!
Jeff transcends all.
He makes you feel it in your soul huh? You should react to "Mojo Pin" or "Lover You Should Have Come Over" live.
"Lover You Should Have Come Over" absolutely wreaks me every time I hear it. So beautiful and heartbreaking!
The live in Chicago version of Lover you should've come over is one of my all time favorite performances. Gives me chills every time.
Chills. Every time.
Lover you Should've come over next. Please.
Have you reacted to Pentatonix yet? I don't believe so. This is the perfect song to start you down the PTX rabbit hole. You will be amazed. Also, in honor of Eddie Van Halen, who passed yesterday (you reated to VH Jump, like a week ago), I am requesting a reaction of Eruption solo, live without a net as a tribute to one of the greatest guitarists ever! Thanks!
Yes I was going to suggest Pentatonix's version!
Yes! But watch the official video by Pentatonix... the visuals are as fitting as the music itself.

There are much better covers of this song. Pentatonix cover is phenomenal!
This song is amazing from beginning to finish, this reaction is amazing BUT your own personal, inspirational words from beginning then to finish are what's important and powerful. I thank you from the eternity of my heart and soul for being you and sharing your opinion for this. Much Love 💞
time emotions
Rufus Wainwrite did a cover of this that was on Shrek.
It was written by Leonard Cohen, but basically everybody has done a cover. Rumor has it that Cohen wrote hundreds of verses, but only included like four when he recorded it. A few of the covers use a few different verses, but most of them are just gone.
A million covers out there by many many people -beautiful song
Moves the soul
I swear there were tears on his lashes...there sure were on mine.
David Bowie once said if he was stuck on a desert island and only allowed to have one record, it'd be Jeff Buckley's album. That's some coronation right there.
‘Forget her’, ‘Dream Brother’, ‘Mojo pin’. All of his songs are incredible really and worth reacting to - but the main one i could suggest is ‘Lover you should’ve come over’. If you want to be amazed
I've seen/heard a lot of people cite the Buckley version as the best, but I have never seen it. I have never felt that any of the covers can touch Leonard Cohen's original version.
Beautiful felt song. RIP. God bless. IJN.
One word :WOW !!!
Rip Jeff Buckley 🙏🏽😥
This is a Lenord Cohen cover. Lenord Cohen was back duing the beat nic era.
First, Flower Children & beat nicks, then Hippies.....Lenord Cohen is a deep cat.
I love the simplistity and deep but quiet mssg.
Oh, ...you are in for such a treat having just found Jeff Buckley, I'm almost jealous!
This is actually a cover, the original was by Leonard Cohen but nothing compares to this
The best rendition of this song!
This song was written by Leonard Cohen from Montreal. It's been covered many, many times and is now very popular. You may want to actually listen to Cohen singing this himself as its available on CZcams. Cohen has written some brilliant stuff and you may want to investigate some of his other material.
As others have noted the song is by Leonard Cohen. Check out Cohen's "Democracy". A good choice for election day?
Whatever you heard before, forget it. This is how it's done!
This is a most converted song. But with utmost certainty this is the best cover of lenoard cohens hallelujah best compliment for an artist is imitation with the highest quality. This is it. I have the original copy on vinyl and it is the sweetest sound
Jeff Buckley and Chris Cornell were the best singers of the 90’s. Their range is crazy.
kd lang's version of this song has always been my favorite, but Jeff's is so much more soulful, like you can really FEEL it.
Yes! Left me sperchless as well.
Youre right! Everyone needs a song that touches them on body, soul, mind and SPIRIT!
Lang's.
Heavenly yet hauntingly beautiful
He does very good, and I’ve heard many different people sing this. But Leonard Cohen wrote and sang it first . His will always my favorite rendition
This amazing talent left us far too soon. He was far too talented to stay on this earth long.
