1:32 "The way Jund generally wins is by throwing money at the opponent until they concede."
Show me the lie.
@@TolarianCommunityCollege Bant Snow is the new Jund
Jund is essentially Seto Kaiba, Planeswalker.
Blame WOTC reprint policy for cards being that expensive in the first place not the player who has to pay.
@@jokerj2302 "has to pay" nah just don't be a sheep lol
Please do more of these explaining other common Modern decks.
Other?
Ara Amahasla Humans, Burn, RB midrange, Ponza, Ad Nauseam, Dice factory, Bogles, Neobrand, Death and taxes, etc......
@@cuddlycard9059 Specially for alternatively smart: the joke is that all the decks you named are unplayable.
Ara Amahasla right.
Cuddly Card Dice Factory?
every deck: Turn one thoughtsieze
Nah you’re confusing Modern with Pioneer
Or it happens in both. I wish we could ban that card. There shouldnt be auto includes
@@amangonemad5117 Lol. Of all things in Modern you choose to complain about Thoughseize.
one-for-one is Magic as Richard Garfield intended.
@@amangonemad5117 One of the fairest cards in the format and you're calling for a ban? Wowwee. So the tron lands are good to go? 3 lands 7 mana? What about cards like blood moon, ensnaring bridge, or chalice of the void? Still totally fine?
I think you've missed the most obvious ways to be good at Modern: Either wear a really nice suit or a shirt with your own face on it. Pretty sure those are the only options for the outfit meta right now.
Outfit Tribal.
Suit beats face.
Two "little" things that I think you missed:
- WHIRZA: Thopter Foundry also give infinite life during the combo, dealing with the thopters would be possible but not enough to win against this deck.
- INFECT: Noble Hierarch is mainly played because of the exalted ability that hugely help the game plan, you mention her for the mana but Birds of Paradise would not be nearly as effective.
You tell them prof, merfolk's rules!
Darn tootin'!
@@TolarianCommunityCollege I was about to complain that Fish got no respect, good thing I waited until the video concluded.
I think you missed the most important one: “Avoid random ban”.
I’ve been waiting for your next upload Prof. Thank you for continuing to upload during these difficult times. We all really appreciate it!
This was an awesome Deck Tech. Especially for a player like myself who is less familiar with the modern staple decks. Would love to see more like this!
Yes! As a noob this is the kind of video I needed. Please do more like this with descriptions and how they are played.
One of my favorite TCC videos ever! What I would have given for an up to date version of this when I first discovered Modern. I think doing this style of video annually or more often than that would be a HUGE help to new players or even enfranchised players who aren't yet used to how quickly modern changes these days. Or if you wanna get real spicy maybe a Legacy version?
Thank you. First time seeing such a quick and detailed break down of the Modern Meta.
Hey, it's The Boss! Great to see you here Ben, I love the fact that my favorite Schmoedown player, also plays and makes content for my favorite game! Keep up the great work!
I love videos like these! I'm a commander player, but I constantly am thinking about getting into Modern/Pioneer. The only issue is as soon as I see the price tag on a deck I want I realize I could probably build 1-3 commander decks from that cost :( Thanks for the great content Prof!
Glad you like them!
for someone who has little to no idea what all these modern deck names mean this was super helpful
9 MORE ways to win in Modern:
UB Mill
Vizier Druid
Heliod Combo
Elves
Naya Burn
UW Control (aka Board Wipe Tribal)
Snow Pile
Niv to Light
8 Whack
Solid collaboration video =) love you professor!
The prof has had quite the creativity spike in the past few months. I for one, am very happy
Thank you for this video Professor! I don't play Modern and despite knowing their names I only had a vague awareness of how those decks functioned.
Perfect overview! Thanks!
Nice work, folks. That was a lot of fun!
First. Island. Sol Ring. Pass Turn. What do you mean we aren't playing commander?
I don't wanna get political but what the frick is modern
Fun fact.....I did this when I went to my very first fnm, just wanted to play a game and felt that Sol Ring was pretty dece. I didn't even know what a format was back then.....
@@MrChocolaaaa My frustration when going from kitchen table to Modern was that all of a sudden i wasn't supposed to play Dark Ritual:/
Tempest and a Computer play legacy then my friend where we don’t get upset with you for playing dark ritual.
Mike same with me! I saw Metalwork Colossus and was like, “Sol Ring works great with this!” Bought 4 Sol Rings, 4 Mind Stones, and 4 Metalwork Colossus, and threw in some random draw spells I had. Consistently getting 3 colossi on turn 2/3 is, apparently, pretty dang busted
It makes me sad to see there was no Affinity deck review. RIP MOX OPAL. WE MISS YOU! :(
I felt the same way about Izzet Phoenix and the loss of Faithless Looting... ):
@@EvlEgle mox Opal was banned but the real kill shot for the deck was when war of the spark karn was printed
@@EvlEgle yeah I know, I just mean robot affinity was done in by Karn even before the Opal was banned
I understand how you feel Professor. I stand by my elf deck! Though it's a scales elf deck and not the traditional modern version but also has a turn 4 win (in a vacuum)
This was a fantastic video!
I’m wanting to get into Modern, so this is very helpful.
Good luck, it's a great format.
Loved this episode. Thanks, TCC! And keep up the great job!!
Thanks! Will do!
Really cool video, but it would be awesome if you go under the budget scenario and see what can be played into competitive scene (like fnm or ptq) with those decks, just for reference, in modern it should be 200$ or lower.
.
Love your videos prof!
any chance for a follow-up video with nine more decks? I hope to see Delver, which is a flexible aggro/tempo/control deck. I run Grixis Delver on MTGO
Wait, IS merfolk doing well? I want to hear about that deck!
I’d love to see this style of video for both pauper and legacy
Professor! Professor! I have found a transport case that may be interesting to review for you. It is the Caseling Extra Large Hard Case (2 Row) for C. A. H. Card Game. I've found it on Amazon while I was browsing transport cases and it seems to be an interesting option for EDH decks or maybe even a cube! :) On the other hand, please, stay safe and healthy, the world needs the Professor as much as they need the Doctor.
God the guys at the MMCast are fantastic GJ you three
One little nitpick, but Whirza tends to tap Sword of the Meek to pay for Thopter Foundry activations, not the tokens. That lets them reset their mana source whenever they use Foundry's ability.
I crushed merfolk into the ground the other day on MTGO and I thought of you, prof ;)
great inspiration for pauper decks ;)
Very educational! Thanks. What would you recommend to a Selesnyan player like me for modern? Thanks in advance! 👍
You guys are awesome!
thanks!
Great presentation, good job
Thank you!
This was a fun video.
Where do you get the art in your office? I'd love to get a big print of mausoleum wanderer :)
Can't wait to see a Pioneer version of this (without Inverter please! I'm done hearing "I'll exile my library and play Thassa's Oracle")
This. I tried playing a few pioneer games with varies decks - mardu vehicles, niv to light, Naya aggro - and all that would happen is I'd just get cheesed out by dimir inverter. I even hit their Oracle/inverter with unmoored ego a couple times - didn't matter -.-
@@johnroyston3859 Try using Nimble Obstructionist from Amonkhet. It's a great card against Inverter that you can cycle to counter Thassa's Oracle's abilities.
Fun, I don’t play Modern, (too expensive), but it’s fun to see this!
Modern By the Prof: OOOH BOIII, THAT HAS TO BE GOOD!!!
I'd love this for legacy!
This is an amazing video! Hope you guys revisit it maybe once a year or something
Is that former Movie Trivia Schmoedown Singles Champion Ben "The Boss" Bateman?!
nice video prof. i enyoed it even tho i dont play modern
how do you go infinite with wrenn&six, savor the moment and mystic sanctuary?
Wrenn & Six starts at 3 loyalty. +1 to get back a blue fetchland. Cast Savor the moment, play your fetchland.
Fetch for Mystic Sanctuary, put Savor (or any extra turn effect) back on top of the library. Repeat this until you've exhausted all your Mystic Sanctuaries.
With all 4 Sanctuaries, you get Wrenn & Six to 8 Loyalty so you can ult him and still have him on board.
That way you can +1 to get back a land and use it to retrace an extra turn effect.
Hello. I recently started Arena (quarentine) and though with casual play I usually ended in diamond, after this new set it seems 80% of decks are control (I play aggro in a variety of dif decks). Do you have a video with your personal insight on a 2 color aggro deck in standard? Number of lands, creatures. Average mana cost. How important are spells and removal. Of course all decks are different and I have made my own conclusions over time while playing, but I'd like a more professional (not casual) point of view so I can better deal with the overwhelminh amount of top tier control decks in the format. BTW, I usually don't run removal if I feel it takes away from the synergies I've developed and ido not use and avoid (when possible) cards that are dominant in the meta. So I have a boros, a gruul and a selesnya. All aggro (hero, pump, proliferate).
You probably won't read this 🙄 but I hope so. Sorry for the long txt
I just made that fires turns deck last week
Its really fun. have been playing on MTGO since we recorded
you can tap sword of the meek for mana as well
Amazing
Sultai Crabvine is pretty fun too
I love Sultai Crabvine to pieces.
Animation is wow!
When can I go back to TCC?
That ending had me laughing. Love the vids yall.
Really like this video
I just don't see how my elf deck wouldn't beat all of these strategies xD as I go infinite on turn 4
Jonathon Choi did an amazing job!
@Tolarian Community College Prof you mentioned merfolk and then still didn't discuss it! 🥴 Otherwise great video more content like this please!
I want Professor's chair!!! Where can I get one?
With the last couple of sets all I've gotta say is "where's the love for merfolk wotc?"
Ixalan/Rivals and Dominaria? Last sets I remember with good merfolk, but I think it's good enough
Will you ever do a spirits review???
How about grixis control in modern?
Great video man! hhaha funny
I wish you would have broken down the merfolk build
am i correct in saying that these are around A ans S tier decks? or a bit lower?
You are correct
Kind of, some of these lists are a bit out of date (probably recorded a while ago due to COVID), but a lot of these are still big players in modern mtggoldfish (www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/modern#online) is a good way to get an idea of the modern meta.
@@onionsnbananas1 Yeah, Partly just due to timing. And also us wanting to focus on Decks that have been top tier for a long period of time. Since they have survived multiple ever shifting meta games. It would make the video have more longevity.
"But where is the jank?" :)
Thanks for the video.
that first deck. lol
"so what you're gonna do with this deck is thought size on turn one, pick ur nose turn 2, and then win turn 3" - me who plays shadow
Lol, OUAT is banned. What would I use as a substitute?
Don't forget whatever Seth has just made flavor of the week!
Anyone else notice that they said seven ways in the video, but it's actually nine? Also would like to hear about this MerFolk deck.
We broke down 7 established decks. But open with a newer list. And Close with a joke about merfolk. A deck that is sadly the but of a lot of jokes. And Also Prof's favorite.
THE BOYSSSS
Very good vídeo
Thank you!
Jund list 61, infect 58 cards maindeck?
At 9:23 why does it sound like it’s auto tuned?? I mean it’s bot bad I just don’t get it.
Great video. No love for my precious R/G Midrange which is miraculously more highly represented than infect currently. I swear the deck gets no attention on youtube, is it just because it's not super interesting?
Wait, in the "inventing turns" deck, you need some way to move Mystic Sanctuary from the battlefield to the graveyard, so that W6 can recur it. Did they skip over that, or am I missing something?
Requaero if it’s anything like the normal taking turns deck, it doesn’t loop until late game, it just chains turns like savor the moment or timewarp until you get enough incremental value and card draw to just play extra turns for the rest of the game.
They skipped over some stuff, yes. The gist of it is you're actually recurring fetchlands to get your mystic sanctuaries out of the deck and with all 4 of them + an extra turn effect in hand, you can get to ult W&6 when he has 8 loyalty and use him to retrace extra turn effects for the rest of the game.
@@drm3ssivador THis!
Need a video with best budget modern deck
czcams.com/video/icbOPv5Yn-k/video.html
Infect deck only has 58 cards in the main deck?
I love the intro but am not sure if I'm missing something.
They must have missed something, here is a slightly more legal list ;) :
www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/modern-infect-87060#paper
My pet deck wasn't on the list :-( But still a great video :-)
I play modern merfolk! 😀
do a pioneer one plz
I think there might be an error in the whurza explanation. You tap the sword for mana, otherwise you will just have a bunch of tapped thopters. Might be wrong, I haven't actually played the deck.
You're right. They tap the thopters, which works out because it doesn't really matter anyways, you still have to untap again and you still get infinite life but with their explanation, it's unclear how you get infinite mana. I guess against Infect it could matter, though.
@@drm3ssivador you tap the sword with urza as well.
My God Ben Bateman on TCC! YESSSSSS love Ben Bateman, I don't care what anyone says current Schmoedown GOAT.
Bro, what about devoted druid/yawgmoth decks ;-;
My favorite way to win is to ask Yuya for some tips.
storm?
They forgot "for those of you with unlimited funds..." Except for Merfolk. :)
Where is mono red blitz
This is cool! Do Pioneer please.
Right now I always win since I'm only playing against myself at home.
I play Living End...still. I'm sad it wasn't mentionned.
one of the beauties of modern is that a video going over every single deck in the format would be 24 hours long.
Wait why wasn’t storm on this list.
👏👏👏
Is Storm not a thing anymore?
it is. these are just a selection of the available decks in modern. Doing a full comprehensive version would...well needs its own show. Speaking of which. Come watch, Fridays at 2!
At least they didn't make this video when Hogaak was around. Then this video would've been "9 ways to ramp Hogaak out before your opponent" except they would only have mentioned the one or two best ways.
where is bogle hexproof?
6:16 WOW
The Merfolk tribe is far from dead.
I also resent every deck on this list.
I rarely ever lose to jund style decks, and finally lost a match against death's shadow.
