  • Twenty-one years ago, the River Aire burst it's banks. The result was the complete swamping of a tiny village on the outskirts of Goole that devastated life there for a long time. The waters would not recede, and the residents were angry that the £30,000 flood defences on the Aire had only partially worked, keeping the neighbouring village dry whilst flooding their own.
How does a village bounce back from such a tragedy? Well, if you come here now you won't have a clue that two decades ago this village was referred to as a lake. The clean up operation and return to normal life has been fabulous. There's no traces of any kind that flooding would ever be a threat but as a member of this village's Facebook Group, that threat is ever present, let me tell you.
Away from the floods though, this village is pretty and a nice place to spend a while if you can. I don't know if I've butchered the pronunciation of the name, but I'm sure I will be put right. There's a nice collection of houses, lots of lovely flower displays around and a railway line that crosses the parish in two places that was once managed by Hull and Barnsley authorities jointly.
Come here, walk around, enjoy the sight a metal scarecrow that's a reminder of the annual festival that was lost some four years ago, or have yourself a look at the village pub which is now closed down but still a nice welcoming sight if I'm honest. If nothing else, you can go fishing here too at Oakland Waters, right on the boundary between the East Riding and Selby.
This is my attempt at the parish of GOWDALL.

Thank You for this. Your pronunciation of Gowdall is fine. Although Cowick is pronounced as in Cow. Following the 2000 floods there was extensive upgrades through 2001 to 2003 to the river banks and flood banks and also the drainage system. The various flood defences are now maintained as per the Reservoir Act and subject to annual inspections.
