See, the Bat family isn't just fighting without gear or Batman, but also without something much more expensive and critical: *Medical Coverage.* If someone gets badly injured, who is going to pay for it? You think they can afford insurance anymore? They're literally clipping coupons and renting out rooms in the mansion right now. They can't afford to maintain their gear or get injured. Harley is used to that mindset, the Bat family isn't.
The idea that Harley Quinn could have anything to teach the Batfamily about fighting is beyond stupid, but I'll let it slide because its not supposed to be a serious show.

I feel like they wanted to show that Harley something unique that she could share the Bat crew. Bat crew are all trained and disciplined and strategic, Harley goes nuts and is willing to self destruct to get the win. Maybe that's something she could have shown... Because comics are to be taken SERIOUSLY at ALL TIMES, and anything that parodies or pillories some people's precious fictional characters is taken as some kind of personal slight. They claim bad writing, or bad-faith attempts at ham-fisted diversity and representation, but the simple truth is they don't like their favourite fictional characters not doing exactly what they want all the time. Speaking as a guy who's been reading comics for nearly fifty bloody years now, some of our fanbase needs to lighten the fuck up...
I mean, all of these things did happen in the comics. The Joker does become mayor of Gotham and sends Batman to prison. Clayface is an actor who got turned into a sludge monster (which now I think about it, makes him basically the same character as Rita Farr from Doom Patrol). The Wal Mart thing tho, I havent seen. Anyway, people just take this comic shit too personally, although you'd have to admit it doesnt make sense that even this version of Batman wouldnt teach his team how to fight without gadgets. Hey quick question to the people angry about this: Have you ever read a comic? Like in your entire life? Comics have literally always adjusted the power levels of various characters to suit whatever story they want. I've seen characters who should NOT be able to beat Hulk, beat Hulk. It's still fun to see them do it. Harley Quinn is about Harley Quinn, and it's made her significantly more competent than you'd normally see her. The entire premise of the show is "What if Harley Quinn wasn't chained to the Joker?", and its conclusion is that she'd be far better off without him. Yes, it does this sometimes by making other characters less competent, but that's completely fine, and not indicative of any kind of cultural agenda or whatever you're worried about.

Yeah there is. I can believe it easily because I just watched it happen. This show does the same thing to basically everyone *except* Harley, honestly- all of the villains have been made stupid, too, even Ivy isn't immune to Harley's stupidity rays. Harley Quinn is physically and mentally empowered here because it's her show and it's supposed to be an (exaggerated) look at how ditching her abusive relationship with the Joker gives her more agency. Her main weakness is now her desperate need for approval- the thing Joker took advantage of- rather than the fact that she's kinda just a crazy person with a bat. Its interesting to read that people felt the show was saying the characters didn't already know hand to hand combat. I interpreted it as they knew how to but became lazy and dependant on gadgets, and thats why Harley is helping them to not rely on their gadgets. Which ever it is though, I still love the series! I feel a lot of people are critical of this show because we haven't been able to get good DC content in a while and this show is closer to what we want. So a lot of the fans are trying to push this show into a more serious direction to fufill the content we're desiring. However, this show is ment to be a comedy that makes fun of all the characters and plots. If we want better DC shows that are more serious and still character driven we need to support the writers strike and push production studios/their higher ups to trust/support their writers to make more shows/movies that are based the comicbook characters we love and not the watered down versions they're sending out to cater towards the general masses!
Seems like Harley is just teaching them to fight dirty, but they should already be well prepared for that. Batgirl I can sort of get, but Nightwing is kind of pushing it.
She is teaching them how to fight "less-heroic" so they can be more resourcefull and creative by using anythin around them as a weapon with the mindset of being killed if they are unable to do it

Now it seems like the writers are getting lazy and they're making a lot of these characters too "relatable" and a little whiny for the sake of trying to cater to a larger audience. That's like the biggest problem with DC writers right now, these characters aren't supposed to be super relatable, they're supposed to be extremely inspiring. Harley Quinn was inspiring in the first two seasons breaking out of her toxic relationship and moving on, batman has been growing from his decade old trauma, and so on. They did batman, and Harley Quinn really well but they flopped with a lot of other side characters as well. Like the show but they could do better.

Why are some people in this thread crying about the Bat-family being spoiled children over-reliant on their gadgets? This is literally a show where the Joker is not only the Mayor of Gotham, but has a partner and kids, Clayface being a hammy theater actor and there is a Walmart-like store dedicated to super villains. Because comics are to be taken SERIOUSLY at ALL TIMES, and anything that parodies or pillories some people's precious fictional characters is taken as some kind of personal slight. They claim bad writing, or bad-faith attempts at ham-fisted diversity and representation, but the simple truth is they don't like their favourite fictional characters not doing exactly what they want all the time.
Speaking as a guy who's been reading comics for nearly fifty bloody years now, some of our fanbase needs to lighten the fuck up...
I mean, all of these things did happen in the comics. The Joker does become mayor of Gotham and sends Batman to prison. Clayface is an actor who got turned into a sludge monster (which now I think about it, makes him basically the same character as Rita Farr from Doom Patrol). The Wal Mart thing tho, I havent seen. Anyway, people just take this comic shit too personally, although you'd have to admit it doesnt make sense that even this version of Batman wouldnt teach his team how to fight without gadgets. He may be a more comedic version of the character, but they still depicted him as competent, so why would the Batfamily not also be competent?

Comics have literally always adjusted the power levels of various characters to suit whatever story they want. I've seen characters who should NOT be able to beat Hulk, beat Hulk. It's still fun to see them do it.
Harley Quinn is about Harley Quinn, and it's made her significantly more competent than you'd normally see her. The entire premise of the show is "What if Harley Quinn wasn't chained to the Joker?", and its conclusion is that she'd be far better off without him. Yes, it does this sometimes by making other characters less competent, but that's completely fine, and not indicative of any kind of cultural agenda or whatever you're worried about.
There’s a difference between adjusting power levels and nerfing characters. Yeah there is. I can believe it easily because I just watched it happen. This show does the same thing to basically everyone *except* Harley, honestly- all of the villains have been made stupid, too, even Ivy isn't immune to Harley's stupidity rays.
Harley Quinn is physically and mentally empowered here because it's her show and it's supposed to be an (exaggerated) look at how ditching her abusive relationship with the Joker gives her more agency. Her main weakness is now her desperate need for approval- the thing Joker took advantage of- rather than the fact that she's kinda just a crazy person with a bat.
It is *not* supposed to be an accurate account of far stronger heroes beating Harley Quinn into paste like most of them probably could do, if it was their own comic, because relative power levels aren't the point of the show.

You can make a parody while still keeping some of the core elements of the lore intact. A Nightwing and Batgirl who can’t fight is clown-level writing, as their hand to hand skills are like 50 percent of their shtick. They don’t have powers, but they make up for it with superb fighting abilities. The gadgets only do so much, they themselves are the weapons. They should be able to beat Harley no problem, or handle goons without weapons. You don’t take away what makes them who they are because “haha, it’s funny.”
I’m all for feminism and empowerment, but you can do that without taking a steaming crap all over the lore of the world this show is coming from.

Its interesting to read that people felt the show was saying the characters didn't already know hand to hand combat. I interpreted it as they knew how to but became lazy and dependant on gadgets, and thats why Harley is helping them to not rely on their gadgets. Which ever it is though, I still love the series!
I feel a lot of people are critical of this show because we haven't been able to get good DC content in a while and this show is closer to what we want. So a lot of the fans are trying to push this show into a more serious direction to fufill the content we're desiring. However, this show is ment to be a comedy that makes fun of all the characters and plots. If we want better DC shows that are more serious and still character driven we need to support the writers strike and push production studios/their higher ups to trust/support their writers to make more shows/movies that are based the comicbook characters we love and not the watered down versions they're sending out to cater towards the general masses!

Seems like Harley is just teaching them to fight dirty, but they should already be well prepared for that. Batgirl I can sort of get, but Nightwing is kind of pushing it.
She is teaching them how to fight "less-heroic" so they can be more resourcefull and creative by using anythin around them as a weapon with the mindset of being killed if they are unable to do it

@@1slayer959 hate to say it but I have to agree with you, s1-s2 of this show was great and really close to the source material even building off of topics that were brought up but never expanded in the DC universe. Now it seems like the writers are getting lazy and they're making a lot of these characters too "relatable" and a little whiny for the sake of trying to cater to a larger audience. That's like the biggest problem with DC writers right now, these characters aren't supposed to be super relatable, they're supposed to be extremely inspiring. Harley Quinn was inspiring in the first two seasons breaking out of her toxic relationship and moving on, batman has been growing from his decade old trauma, and so on. They did batman, and Harley Quinn really well but they flopped with a lot of other side characters as well. Like the show but they could do better.

Batman trained in all kinds of martial arts, and in turn trained his sidekicks in enough of them to at least put up a good enough fight with most enemies in hand to hand combat. Nightwing has had to spar with Bruce in hand-to-hand combat with no gear in multiple training sessions, and Barbara is the daughter of Commissioner Gordon - am i seriously supposed to believe that neither him or one of his subordinates taught her basic self-defense on top of Bruce training her as batgirl?
They should have blatantly emphasized the fact that Bruce being in jail means that their health insurance is on hold, so Alfred can no longer hop in the family limo to buy drugs in bulk off-the-counter
