  • Comparing the controversial AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT graphics card against cheaper, older GPUs and more powerful options at the same price point in 2022
    Whether or not your PC is up to scratch for PCIe 4.0, you are likely going to be disappointed by the RX 6500 XT in one way or another. The 4GB VRAM, the limited memory bandwidth, the lack of encoding and video outputs all combine to make a pretty lousy experience for gamers on a budget. In this video, I'm investigating whether the RX 6500 XT is really worse than cards which preceded it, and whether there's a better way of spending your money.

    Nice video and analysis. I have a bought a RX 6500 XT and even after watching your video, I am happy with my purchase. The framerates are simply good enough. You have again proven that point. I play games only occasionally, so that doesn't warrant a more expensieve new graphics card like the RTX 3050 or the Radeon RX 6600. I have paired it with an Intel I5-11400, so I can use the PCI-Express 4.0 bus, which makes the card work as intended. I don't need to record anything, I am not into streaming. And I only use 1 monitor. So for me this card is absolutely fine.

    • @epmcgee
      @epmcgee Před rokem +3

      Even if you did want to record or stream you can use you CPU to encode. For recording you shouldn't have any issues, with streaming it really depends on the game and CPUs performance what quality you'd be able to run.
      It always seems like people look at this card and say, "but it can't do this, it's bad!" instead of considering it for what it was intended.

    Not that I am necessarily defending the 6500 XT, but Control has a problem with loading textures by default. You need a mod to fix it. Not the card's fault.
    HZD also has a problem with AMD and 4 GB GPUs. Not the 6500 XT especially. ALL 4 GB AMD GPUs. It just loads lower quality textures for some reason. Can't tell if it's a game or driver issue.

    Don't forget that many Fury GPUs can be massively undervolted to knock off some serious watts, I managed to undervolt from 1.250v to 1.130v while holding stock 1050mhz and according to HWinfo64 I knocked my core peaks from 280w to 210w! I'm sure if drop the clock speeds I can go even lower!

    • @IcebergTech
      @IcebergTech  Před 2 lety +7

      At 200w, that would drop the calculated dollars-per-frame down to $3.47 from $3.58. That difference would be much bigger in more expensive energy markets, granted, but proportionally it still isn't enough to justify the $250 price tag. It would need to be $160 or less to be competitive- and I don't doubt you could find them for that price, but for the time being the average buyer is still more likely to find a good deal on a 980Ti, 1070 or 4GB Polaris.

      Same with my 290X, can go down to 170-180w usage while still running at 1080mhz, Don't remember 980ti being any good at undervolting in contrast if anything I had to modify bios to allow for 300w power limit (250 stock) to get sable-ish 1500mhz core clock and even then it sometimes wasn't enough
      Fury X vs 980Ti dates back good 7 years by now and as in 2015 980ti is still a smarter choice if you care just about performance, It overclocks better (some people did nearly 1700mhz on air putting it above stock 1080 lmao), has moderns drivers and runs more titles better, Fury X in contrast was always an interesting card but never really got it's performance boosted by new games as AMD fans in 2015 claimed it would. If anything HBM 2 in Vegas has still awful utilization for how powerful these cards are

    There are many reason i love from rx 6500xt:
    1. The card is sold at reasonable price and not being inflated by scalper (although people said it's overpriced, it's better than used vga being sold more expensive than this with worst performance)
    2. Very efficient. From your video, the card rarely draw over 100watts and it still achieve over 60 fps on most games. Certainly very appealing for people with expensive electricity in their country
    3. Nobody want it. From scalper to miner, even the reviewer saw this card as garbage while the actual performance isn't that bad, thus making the stock readily available.

    • @epmcgee
      @epmcgee Před rokem +6

      I got mine at a cut rate because nobody wants them, and I'm just like... Why would I risk getting a 2nd hand that, if it actually works, might just give me the same issues that the card I'm replacing is giving me, with no warranty and no customer support after the fact.
      I don't think it's a high end GPU and I don't treat it like it's high end or made for the rest of the consumer market that needs 4 screens and hardware encoding, etc. It's not for everyone. If I'd bought something more expensive that should do those things but doesn't, then yeah I'd hate it. But with what it does, and the market it's intended for, it's great.
      The main thing for me is I got it cheap, and it took me from Low Settings in The Witcher 3 at 23 FPS average to Ultra with 73 average, and that's not the only game that this card has made playable at High or Ultra, let alone just playable.

    Oh how I looked forward to this card, after researching and dreaming about the RX 5500 XT I figured this card would be that but with ray tracing. Then details started coming out. 4 GB VRAM, PCIe 4.0 x4, no video encoders. And the glimmer of hope that the 6500 XT gave me just fizzled out. It could’ve been the perfect upgrade to my RX 460 if it was just a sequel to the RX 5500 XT +ray tracing. But my RX 460 could encode video, and therefore capture gameplay with my friends, the 6500 XT can’t. My RX 460 was already a 4 GB ROG STRIX variant, and at least had an x8 PCIe connection where my motherboard currently only has PCIe 3.0. This card was one of the many disappointments of the gpu shortage/scalper pandemic. Let’s hope the RX 7500 XT, if there is one, is everything this card should have been, at least an x8 connection, options for 8 GB, and especially video encoders. No leftover laptop gpu nonsense.

    rx 6500 xt owner here, i just wanna say all the points you made are valid, but let me add this.
    if your coming from a GTX 1050 like me, then what i wanna say is, if you can afford it go ahead and try and see if you can build a new PC. that's what i decided to do,
    so here's my full build, except for the case and power supply, didn't need to buy a new case and my power supply is 750 watt 80 plus gold. so i have more than enough headroom.
    Intel Core i5 12400 12th gen lga1700 - price i paid = 175 at Microcenter
    16gb Corsair ram - price 79
    Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 6500 XT - price i paid = 200 at Microcenter
    motherboard MSI Pro Z690-P LGA1700 Intel 12th gen - price i paid = 150
    total cost for the build = $604 dollars. i already have a 256gb solid state as a boot drive, and i have a 2TB WD for storage. so didn't need to buy that, and also Intel 10th, 11th, and 12th gen motherboards are pci 4.0 compatible, can't say for sure on 10th gen but it is on 11th and 12th gen. so that is my build from my previous PC FX 8320 and GTX 1050, but im still keeping that PC for older games. the only thing i did was i bought the 1660 as a replacement for the 1050.
    okay so why build a new PC and grab the weakest GPU instead of an RX 6600 or RTX 3060, because i wanted to future proof myself. by building a new PC, i can worry about getting a better card later. i just got a PS5 and i still have an Xbox One X, so those can fill a gap. ill be getting a Series X at some point, so if you don't max out the settings i been able to play some games in 1080p. if you turn the resolution down to 1600 by 900p you can actually turn up some setting from medium to high you can get pretty good fps.
    yes it's not the best the card you can buy, but you can certainly do worse. atleast with this card it gets you in the door and it is an up to date card, but im not recommending this build.
    if you want to build something similar but you don't feel like waiting for the next cards from Nvidia and Radeon to come, well my suggestion would be the 3060ti or the 6600 XT, now honest opinion the 3070 or 6700 XT if you can afford it that would be the route to go from a 1060 or 580. i only grabbed the 6500 for now as a stop gap, but everything else is all built for the future.
    now one little tip to those of you that do decide to buy the 6500, yes it has HTPC, so if your a channel on CZcams, you won't be able to record. however there's always ways of getting around that, im not much of a channel so it's not a deal-breaker for me, and the little gameplays i do i use the Xbox through Elgato Capture to stream through OBS.

      Ryzen 3 3100 3.6GHz $190 in Feb 2022, I know I way overpaid, I wanted a 3300x but was sold out or more than the entire build.
      Delta (2x8) 16gb ddr4 3200 RGB (out of box) $65
      and picked up a case for $50 (mine was an old tower from a business that was crap)
      Prices are rounded but it came out to $400 on newegg...
      pcie4 btw..
      game changer but now I am limited by the 2gb r9 285.. It was a good mid range card back in the day but now it lacks vram and gets way hot and a rx 6500 xt will fix all that.
      This dated GPU is a bottleneck now and I was hesitant to get the 6500 because of the 64 bit coming from 256 bit..
      Hate to admit it but to save money I was looking at the 6400 lol but don't tell nobody..
      So I picked one up on newegg for $200 with tax but it also came with 3 games they said valued at $180 - saints row 2022, Forespoken, and sniper elite 5..
      It is going to be a huge upgrade even with the memory limits so I am looking forward to getting it in and checking it out.. also when prices come down and I am not happy anymore I can get a faster card with more vram and it won't really cost extra because of how much cards are right now..
      I'll be in it for $600 but I also have Playstations, Xboxs, and even switches for games that it can't run good enough..
      That's all I have to say about it..

      @@ziggy2377 not a bad build, but you definitely overpaid for that Ryzen 3 3100. you could get the new Intel i3 12100 with igpu for less and it's only 120.
      now in fairness newer AMD ever since Ryzen was a thing, they usually offer a little more performance than Intel, but there's not that much of a gap in performance.
      still it is a good CPU, but you mentioned don't tell anyone about the 6400. why who am i gonna tell, and if you have to buy it as a temporary solution who cares what others think. if you know why your buying it, the only person it should matter to is the person buying, in this case you.
      the only thing you need to be aware of is, you can't stream or do different things, but you can play games. i only bought the RX 6500 like i said as a temporary solution. im waiting to see if prices drop a little more, or i might wait until the 4000 series from Nvidia. but im a little worried about prices, because even before all the crazy scalping and mining, AMD and Nvidia didn't do the public any favors by increasing MSRP prices. that's the reason midrange cards and budget cards suffered for awhile.
      im not paying 400 dollars for a graphics card meant for 1080p, starting MSRP should've been 149 and 199 for the budget cards, and midrange should be around 260 to 329. for RTX 3060 and RX 6600 XT, now as you go up to like 3060ti, 3070, RX 6700 XT, those are upper midrange 1440p cards, so i can those being 399 and 450, but 1080p midrange should only be 299 at most.

    As of now, AMD have issued a new legacy driver for the R9 290, R9 Fury X and other GCN 1, 2 and 3-based GPUs. This doesn't appear to be a U-turn by AMD, as the cards are all still considered "legacy" products, but it is still a welcome update- especially for those uncertain about installing third-party drivers

    Very good review but one thing is missed that was not taken into consideration. when the 6500xt came out a 480 was $300, and 1070 even more. inflation in the USA since these cards came out including Tariff prices makes them about 35% more expensive. 5 years ago this would have been a $150 card and it's unfortunate AMD has to try to sell a card in this climate. even now as prices are coming down the closest competitors are just now starting to compete. 5 months ago this card was a godsend for many people needing a GPU. Today unless you have to buy new it doesn't make as much sense but this card actually gave people a product to buy. I built a $700 test system with this card to resell 4 months ago and it was very impressive(pared with an 11400). I did not get the texture issues in halo that you did, I wonder if it is a newer driver bug. I'm glad to see prices coming down and cards to be affordable again.

    That lack of PCIe 4 bandwidth plus getting kneecapped by older PCIe generations completely screws over the two markets that would otherwise benefit the most from the RX 6400 and 6500 XT: those wanting to upgrade pre-existing older PCs or turn off-lease Optiplexes and similar off-lease office PCs into something that can kinda/sorta game, and those wanting to turn SFF OEM prebuilts into budget gaming PCs are especially screwed by that kneecapping as the RX 6400 would've been perfect for that application otherwise, being available in single-slot half-height form factor and only needing bus power.

  • @AjrAlves
    @AjrAlves Před rokem +2

    Not defending the crappy 6500XT but I don't think the 64-bit memory interface is what leads to popping textures, the GDDR5 1650 despite having a 128-bit bus does have less bandwidth (128GB/s vs 144GB/s and that's not even accounting Infinity Cache) than the 6500XT and still doesn't display texture popping problems. Also for the first half of 2021 I used a 5600G with 2x8GB 4133MHz DDR4 (66.1GB/s bandwidth) with the Vega 7 @2375MHz and I wouldn't get texture popping problems, even at trash framerates in Horizon Zero Dawn for example.
    I don't know but I think the x4 PCIe can also be the blame for this in the 6500XT.
    Also: sapphire presented a 8GB (doubled GD6 density) 6500XT and said it's about 14% faster vs 4GB 6500XT using PCIe 4.0, which further reiterates that the problem with this card is having to transact memory through a slow interface, as the 8GB card wouldn't have to do that as much.

    I have an RX6500XT and for most things its a good card. If you're into high end games and PC gear then a 1k card is for you. In my experience there are many that buy 1k+ cards etc that are renting and driving a 2k ShtBx. PC Reviewers are trying to compare your average 4 cylinder car with a WRX figuratively speaking. Just like the cars, you can't do this because in real world use it doesn't work like that. I'm happy driving my Audi out of the drive of my home that I own because I don't throw away money that's not necessary to waste. I use good stuff that I can afford so I can afford other things. The game world isn't there it all is. If you can afford all the other stuff and the upper end of the PC world, then good for you. Not everyone can, It's that simple..!

    The RX 6500 XT really isn't that bad. I've noticed that people are testing this gpu on really modern games with very high-end graphics which just doesn't make any sense to me. I get that it's meant for testing it but it's 200/250$ what do you expect from it? I have this gpu and it runs every game I've played so far perfectly fine on medium/high settings I've rarely had to lower it to low for the game to be smooth. I just don't get the hate it's getting when I see nothing wrong with it. This is my personal opinion since I don't even care that much about graphics/settings so I've had no issue with lowering the settings in games to get more performance out of it. I also think 200/250$ is a fine price for it

    bought 2 of those for my nephews for xmas. I am really not that happy with the choice but there is hardly anything available around that price range and i don´t feel like gifting them used miner cards that may just be burned and die soon.
    So it had to be new... and the only other card that was available was a 1050 ti and that is even worse. 1650 out of stock, or they charge an arm and a leg for it.
    Thankfully it will be good enough for them as one is currently having a gtx 750 and the other doesn´t even have a pc yet (he is getting my mums old pc which is an athlon 860k).
    Now i can look forward in upgrading their mainboards/cpu/ram next year to at least get the pci-e bottleneck sorted... and then hope that gpu prices start to become normal again, or in other words get a value per buck ratio more in line with pre minepocalypse times.
    I mean sure my older nephew is "hyped" by classmates that he needs a rtx 3080 or 4080 (even so he plays mostly just fortnite and some fifa on a 1080p tv, for which both cards would be overkill) but there is simply no way i would buy a 10 years old a 1000+ bucks gpu (even more so as the pc he got from his father for his birthday is an 2 core i3 + the mentioned gts 750).
    Tried to explain to him that pc´s don´t work like that and components need to be balanced but that is something he doesn´t seem to understand (even less so his father, the kind of person for which anything beyond pressing the power button on a ps5 is too difficult).
    Thx for the video, this at least gives me a better idea of what to expect and it will do.

In new and future games that leverage things like aync compute and mesh shaders such as Halo Infinite the 6500xt curbstomps every used card in its price range. When it comes to most recent and older games though that aren't taking advantage of modern hardware properly it is the other way around.
